i really dont think its going to stop bonnaroo from doing anything in the long run...except for booking kanye west. . i dont see him being invited back... other than that, i dont think this will have a long term affect on anyone, including kanye...

I'd say there's a huge difference between Kanye and Metallica. Metallica works hard to please their audience and tries to earn every bit of respect their fans give them. This was evident in their napster dilio, but also is evident in the fact that they fully support the sharing of their live shows. Respect them enough to buy their music, and they give you their live shows for free. I get that. In fact, I read that you could hear Metallica warming up hours before they went on stage practicing to make sure they got it right. There was nothing too terrible in booking Metallica I don't think...
Then take Kanye... He claims to work hard to do what he does, but there's no evidence of this. He plays shows for himself, and he is just ignorant beyond belief. His personality is nothing close to what Roo stands for, which is rewarding your fans and not yourself.
IF the reason for Kanye's late start was indeed technical difficulties (which I find hard to believe...) most performers would've said eff it after an hour and just forgone that part. I'd like to think that if the FLips last year couldn't get their UFO to work that they would've just said "you know what, we'll make up for it by going on now and just putting that much more into our performance" Kanye, on the other hand... waited until 30 minutes before the sun rose to start his glow in the dark show.

I think the real tragedy is that I still have to hear about Kanye West all over this board for months to come probably... I wish he just put on an average performance so nobody would remember it and thus not talk about him ;D

Did anyone catch Robert Randolph's set... he had a little somethin to say about Kanye... he got the whole crowd cheering "Kanye sucks! Kanye sucks!" and we all loved it so much that we were cheering that as he took his final bow and left the stage... I've got so much more respect for him, now that I know he didn't treat it like "oh, well he's my fellow musician and I shouldn't bash him and I should back him up"

I hope you're not referring to my post...I did happen to mention learning a lesson, but the point of my post was that crowd acceptance of acts is NOT about whether they're new and different but about whether the musicians respect the audience at all. I was specifically pointing out that people DID enjoy Metallica (and Tool last year)...
Anyway I may just be making an idiot of myself here because maybe my post wasn't one of the ones you're thinking of at all, I just felt guilty reading this and I'm hoping nobody misunderstood me.

I've never seen so few people at any show at the What Stage, at any time of day. I wasn't planning on going to his show, but he started right as I was about to drift off and since I couldn't sleep through it I thought I'd go check it out. His props and stage effects were amazing. His performance and timing were bad. I was glad when he was done.
hes a little bitch and id like to knock his nose down this throat. if it were techinical difficulties i think someone with manners would have come out and told the crowd to come back later. i think the crowd would have been ok with a 4:30 start if they KNEW that ahead. instead you guys missed other stuff. i think he just wanted the total floor with no other competition and THATS why he did that. cause hes a punk ass bitch!

I guess that will be better than everyone bitching about the dust from last year though. At least they can take out their frustrations on a human this time instead of nature.
IF the reason for Kanye's late start was indeed technical difficulties (which I find hard to believe...)
I'm very convinced there was ego involved, but I do know that there were at least a few real problems; for example, the tv screen the suspended from the ceiling wasn't working right (hence the up and down so many times) and in the end, they just settled for letting there be a splash of red and blue dots across the screen constantly. It totally ruined the effect, so I understand why they wanted to try to fix it at all costs.
And plus, Pearl Jam did run an hour late, delaying the break-down and set-up process between shows, so really Kanye was more like an hour late. I'm still uber-pissed about it, though.

Well said. I don't know many people who were even thinking of attending his show anyways. Yea its headline news, but I don't think its a tragedy or will hurt Superfly's reputation. Their reputation has always been questioned with certain performers but its an eclectic mix of performers and that's what makes Bonnaroo so enjoyable for all!

I think a big reason everyone is so vocal about it is that the vast majority of people at Kanye were not pre-existing fans, they were going out on a limb in the spirit of Bonnaroo and giving someone new and different a chance to impress them and make them fans. And for their effort and good will, they got in return a resounding "suck it."
These people left Phil Lesh (who is bound to be back at Roo at least a few more times) early, and skipped Talib Kweli, etc, to be on time to see this "super-duper awesome glowy trippy extravaganza worth making two huge changes (time and venue)." They got screwed out of more than just one show. On top of that, if they were generous enough to actually stay until he came on at least to see what it was all about, they probably got back to their camps at about 5:30 or 6:00, losing precious brain-regenerating sleep that, brush it off or not, is entirely necessary to stave off heat exhaustion. If they were able to sleep at all, they probably missed a few early morning shows on Sunday that probably really rocked (like Tennessee Schmaltz and Isreal Vibration).
So, I get that the people who didn't get let down by Kanye are going to tire quickly of hearing about him. But, you also have to respect that it wasn't just a late and crappy show, it was a train wreck that followed people back to camp and maybe even all day Sunday. It just put a really, really bad vibe out that spread its fingers throughout the camps and beyond the gates of Roo.
I think that the "lesson to be learned" has nothing to do with not wanting Roo to book new and different types of act. The real lesson is not to book toolbags.

This is the part that just killed me. The negative vibe. After leaving Sigur Ros at 3am, I thought, why not check out Kanye for a minute? Its not exactly my thing, but Bonnaroo is supposed to be about experiencing new things, right? In all my years of Bonnaroo, I've never felt the negativity that I felt as people left the What stage. Booing, cursing, anger. Sad that such a positive environment would be taken to such a low place.
I was working in a vendor booth for a few hours each day. On Sunday, the guy that ran the booth talked with AC Entertainment (who booked Kanye West). The lady from AC had said that Kanye refused to go on stage with so many other tents performing. He said he wanted to be the only act so that everyone would come see him.
On top of that, the true "Tragedy of Kanye West" was that he was paid around $200K for Sunday mornings disaster.

^^^The lineup was part of the problem, though. Obviously, it's not scientific, and it is a very small sampling, but of 60 people who've answered the "why didn't you go" poll, 36 said that the lineup was at least part of the reason they didn't go.
Yes, there are lots of factors to account for the low ticket sales, and the lineup was one of them.
So apparently the true story is that kanye got some mud on one of his shoes and they had to wait for a new one to be shipped over from mars before he would start.
I dont think his show was all that great. Its like he tried to mix ziggy stardust with p-funk mothership and a big back of suck came out... And who the fuck names a ship Jane
Ok for waiting for EVER to see kayne West it was more of the principle of the thing to wait and see the killer show... However who ever came up with his act is a total tool. I kept think during the moring... "don't leave me Jane" "where and I" and would start cracking up! His routine was a total joke. It was the dumiest thing i have ever seen. Then for him never t say anythign about being so late or thanks for coming and waiting... when he finished his set he was done... no talking to the audiance. Chris rock was right when he said West had the biggest eggo of anyone he knew... that seams to be true from his performance.
Pearl Jam ended nearly an hour past their scheduled time. (Which Im not complaining about because they flippin rocked, how about that Watchtower?)
The crew had to assemble a stage show that usually takes all day in about 2 hours time which was not possible.
The smaller screen had some sort of pink spotting in it and they took some time to resolve that (unsuccessfully)
Im sure that once the crew had the stage set up that they went and got Kanye and started. I was about 100ft from the stage and it was very obvious that they were scrambling to get it finished. As for just scrapping it and going on without it... its not a regular hip hop show. There was no Dj or live band for him to play with. All the beats and music and computer dialog from the show was prerecorded in order for it to be a linear narrative. He couldnt just scrap the show and toss some records on per a usual hip hop show. Plus he had already advertised it being the gitd show. I have a hard time believing it was ego. I really dont think Kanye wanted to have his gitd show to hit its finale' in the sunlight. (Although I thought it was cool and wandered way back out past the pond to camp with a huge smile on my face). Im sure that if he could have started earlier he would have. The problem is that alot of people were flat out hoping that something like this would happen so they could say "See? We told you. He's a problem. He's a huge jerk with a huge ego". He did the best he could all things considered. I would have much rather seen him play his second stage spot maybe with the roots backing him or something of that nature, but I dont think he ruined Bonnaroo by any means. We're all grownups, if we didnt want to stay up and watch the show.... we didnt have to. Not to mention that I dont know what show everyone talking poorly was at because the crowd I was in was loving Kanye's show. People were going nuts during "Good Morning", "Touch The Sky", and especially "Good Life".
Most of the time, people think its really cool when someone plays till morning.
Really?? So he came out and warned the crowd awaiting him as soon as possible that it was taking longer to set up than expected and that they may have to wait an hour or two? And then when he did start performing he apologized for the two hour wait? Well, it's good to know he did the best he could then... I guess people shouldn't have such expectations of the greatest hip hop artist alive
