I would like the speed for the beer line, instead of getting a refund, why not have carryover to next year if you do not want to wait at the end of the fest. (or the ability to apply left over balances to next years ticket) I will still bring cash, but I would like the idea of not having soaked bills sticking together while trying to get a brew and not having all of my wits about me at the time (do not have many to begin with anyway). I would also implement the buy before fest (at the time of ticket purchase) - no lines

If they do this, it could work, though I still wouldnt buy one. I dont like the idea of having to divide up m ymoney into "centeroo money" and "shakedown money," you know?
Funny, I was thinking I like the idea for exactly that reason.
Plus, I never found any lines to be particularly long for beer or food - in fact, most of the time I just walked right up to the counter.
The only time I had an issue was next to the main stage - where, after ordering my chicken on a stick, the lady working the register gave a "mmmm HMM! fuck this - I quit!" and promptly walked away.
its all well and good to talk about protecting the vendors' proceeds and speeding up line waits, but Danbird brings up a good point: why not just make regular credit/debit cards usable if you're going to run all that electrical/network wiring? even if you decided to go wifi, you still have to provide each vendor with a server capable of interfacing with the 'roo mainframe.
Credit cards cost money for the vendor to use.
Although a self-imposed debit system would have some initial set-up costs, in the long term, it would essentially cost nothing. Plus, as you suggested, it would probably generate interest via some short-term investment - especially if they sell the cards in advance.

The cards aren't THAT bad of an idea, because it's going to be limited to centeroo, right... Everyone brings their cash and all it takes is getting some cards. I'm sure they'll have several tents/kiosks set up similar to the merch tents to load up your card. As far as shakedown goes, it'll always be cash, a whole infrastructure set up around the campground??? I like the quote though, don't fix what ain't broke.
I hope that if this goes into effect, there will still be well maintained ATMs, I don't drink, and prefer shakedown food, as well as other things sold on shakedown that official vendors will definitely not have.

For me its simple. I will not get a card. If centeroo goes cashless I'll boycot the official vendors no matter how good those funnel cakes are. Once in Centeroo I usually buy my food in there for convenience, but Ill make the trips out to Shakedown if I have to. MY friend usually has to be back on Sunday night so I never get to stick around to Monday, and if thats when they will do the redeeming I'd be beyond pissed. This whole thing just seems to Big Brother to me. The food lines have NEVER been an issue for me. And like the IT guy earlier said, its not if but when it crashes and then we get Woodstock 99. A quote from the movie Friday, "Playing with my money is like playing with my emotions."
I was thinking about this last night, and I realized I felt pretty loved by AC that they sent out a poll concerning this. Even if they did go cashless I'd still have cash on me, because obviously it's good to have some universal tender cuz a card isn't going to help me at the Waffle House. I think that goes withtout saying for most people.
By the poll, AC just might be trying to consider the comfort and safety and overall happiness for the attendees. If they were just doing it to maintain control of the money at vendors, they'd just do it without considering their ticket holders. It has the potential to shorten lines. It has the potential of making cashier's jobs safer. It has the potential of making my life in centeroo just a tiny bit simpler except for having to add up my purchases at the end of the day. It has the potential to be a bit of a tool for AC, management or marketing or otherwise. It does seem like a wierd amusement-park approach to bonnaroo, though, and I don't like that.
There's obviously some negatives, and I'm thinking they're really looking at that, which is why that poll e-mail went out. I can't see that it would exempt all the other types of vendors, but it may make the main ones move faster and more efficiently, which is what I give a crap about when I'm in centeroo. And maybe they think that some cash is going in to vendor's pockets, or whoever is in charge of hanging on to that stockpile. Keeping track of inventory and sales has to be a logistical nightmare. It's a festival but also a business for AC. But it seems like they have a lot of pros on their end for it but want to be sure it doesn't kill the pros on the ticket holders end. Not many places would give a sheeit.
It does kinda make me feel like I'm 10 years old in summer camp and hoping I don't go over my $20 allowance. So boo to that.
We treat mishaps like sinking ships and I know that I don't want to be out to drift Well I can see it in your eyes like I taste your lips and They both tell me that we're better than this

I'd purchase a $100 one for the weekend. Pretty much just for food and drinks inside centeroo. Also, I don't understand how it'd be such a hard item for you all to carry around. How would it be a hassle? It'd cut down on lines. Plus, it's not like if you don't use it all you can't get your money back. I'm ALL for it. For those who think they'll lose it cause they're sooo drunk, then maybe get something that will hold it for you and check out this site: www.safetycentral.com/hidmonpouc.html
I hope bonnaroo does this. Plus, I wouldn't have to worry about having to go the ATM in centeroo. Those things suck.
I think that the big issue is what if the card got erased (by being near a cellphone, credit card or change -- but what are the chances that we'll have those in our pockets with the cards?), was never properly programmed (but I'm sure that we'd all get the benefit of the doubt on that!!!) or the system went down (see the IT guy's post).
I'm all for options but I just wouldn't want all of my eggs in that one basket.
I think if I were to get one I would just get 25-50 dollars that way Im not SOL if something happens. Even with my debit card and credit cards Im still a cash person. There's something about seeing your cash diminish that slows your spending

I just see too many things going wrong with this. I mean, there's always bugs to work out when you do something for the first time, and I don't see why this wouldn't be any exception. I don't mind it if they accept cash and these cards, but if the roo decides to accept cards only, I'd get pretty poed, just because I feel more comfortable carrying my own cash around instead of a little card that could very easily be lost during roo madness, even with safety harnesses. I'd rather lose a 20 dollar bill than a card with 250 on it.

Not a bad idea ....I know last year a lady at a beer tent saturday night around 2am tried to screw me I bought 3 beers and gave her 50$....she gave me change as if I gave her a twenty. I said excuse me u gave me the wrong change I am sober. She just laughed. I know they were screwing people all weekend. The card would work great IMO as long as u get a recipe of some sort to show how much they debited. I hate walking around with cash in my pockets all wet and crumbled up (I don;t like wearing a wallet at fests for obvious reasons)....so I welcome the card but be careful w/ your cash

What's wrong with having the option to do either?
I was thinking the same thing. as long as both options are available who really cares....I don't get bent out of shape b/c my favorite store has gift cards......

I wouldn't have a problem with this if they have both cash and the card. I'd have the card for beer runs and such, but I'd want cash as an option as well. I just hope they listen to the survey.

Not a terrible idea. The idea of carrying around that much cash never sits well with me. In the long run though I dont think $50 on a card for food would really matter to me.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!

I don't think this is a terrible idea. Just like how I don't carry cash in real life, just use my debit card. I will probably pick up a card for 100 or so, as long as I can buy beer with it, because it will be easier to keep track off then 100 bucks in paper form. By the end of the day I got change in every pocket and in my drunken stuper I end of dropping some, just clip the card to my belt and I am good to go.
