Anybody listen to the new Kings album? I've heard the single "Sex On Fire". It was alright thought it was kind of poppy. Anyway if you've heard the album lemme know what you think I'm kind of curious.

The album doesn't suck, but apart from the vocals you wouldn't be able to tell its a KOL album, I imagine that is probably most people's main complaint.

I happen to have heard it... at least 12 times in the last week. I'm addicted to it... I think it's great, Closer, Crawl, and Revelry jump to mind at the moment, but it's really the whole album. And Cold Dessert is a stunning album closer, my favorite song, I think. This album is a sure bet to make my personal best of 2008.
It's very different than their past efforts, fully stepping into the U2 direction that they had initially explored on Because of the Times... At first I really didn't like it at all... Now, I enjoy the first half, but find the second half to be VERY weak (almost filler material)... I don't mind the poppy direction, if the songs could back it up, and the first half does, but the second half doesn't do it for me... I wish they would have cut it in half and released an EP...

I think that I sort of agree with this. When I first listened to it, the first couple of songs had my unidivded attention. After that though, I started multitasking and it was kind of just background music to what I was doing. Still, it's good. Again, the first half is better than the second. I always find myslef going back to listening to at least the first 3 tracks. And, I have to say that I thought "Sex On Fire" sounded really good live on SNL. Then again, that may just me...
Change my mind. I love the album all together. The first half is still my favorite part of it, but the second half is great, too.

could someone explain how they sound more "poppy" on this effort? I admit sex on fire sounds like a song more geared towards females, but it's still a catchy song and has some nice guitar work. I really like this album, as with every KOL album that's been released. Crawl, Cold Desert, Be Somebody, Revelry......all really awesome songs from a great band. They have gotten better and better and evolved more and more with every cd they make.
Really like it. Can't wait to buy it (with Cold War Kids) tomorrow.

Fancy seeing you here, nate.

I think that I'll be getting KOL as well. Want to listen to CWK before I make a decision on purchasing that.
I think it's a great record. Definitely more of a polished sound than prior albums, but still well written and very well produced. These songs will be great in a live arena setting as well. Don't knock a band for taking a step in a different direction. If you didn't like it first go around, listen again, and do it with an open mind.

Sure, here are my thoughts on it being more "poppy". Caleb's voice, for one, is actually singing, instead of the gruff vocals from the first two records (and about half of Because of the Times). The production is also slick, with lots of Edge-like guitar effects, double-tracked vocals, and background oohs/aahs. Also, you said that it was "catchy", which is the essence of pop music. All of the songs minus "Be Somebody" sound completely radio ready to me, should modern American radio be willing to take the chance of playing an actual arena rock band not named Coldplay or U2, or any rock band worth a crap for that matter. Plus, this is truly an arena rock album, which by definition is meant to be played to the masses. Because of the Times had some arena-ness to it, but this is KoL's full onslaught. My two cents...

it was better the second time through..i had already heard crawl, sex on fire, and manhattan live at all points..and the rest of the album doesnt hold up to those. (except the opener "closer" which is great and classic kings). other than that it decent. but a bit polished for the kings for my liking. should be good live though.
i just find myself longing for the old school "aha shake" era more raw sound.

i still need to give it a few more listens, but its not at all what i was expecting. it sounds like the b-sides to because of the times. they repeat ideas from that album, just compare the songs Fans and Manhattan, and True Love Way and 17, Trunk and Be Somebody. Now Obviously the songs aren't identical, they all go their own way, but you can't dispute the similarities. Its like they wrote a new song with an old idea. Crawl and Closer stand out, those are my favorites. It not a good album; it doesn't even touch the quality of previous kings of leon. Feels like they wrote it in a weekend.
Mine too. That song gets stuck in my head and won't get out
i've liked the album from the beginning .... but USE SOMEBODY has only recently grown on me... i think seeing them do this song live has given me a different appreciation for it... i love all the harmonies and i especially like the drummer's harmony parts.... that's a bit technical but whatev..... i can't wait to hear these songs live...

I don't know about their least best. I love their first one but even they admit that they didn't really know what they were doing and were still learning their instruments (some of them....others had played longer). I feel like this album shows their growth and expansion into different types of sounds. I really love it.

I'd love to see them at Roo again
See, I really love that first one. They may not have known what they were doing, but they could have fooled me. Youth & Young Manhood is one hell of a rock record.
