As you all know Kanye last year was scheduled to play at 2:45 in the morning on the What Stage after Pearl Jam. It was the first time a performer had even been on the main stage after the headliner. It was an absolute disaster though and Douchye didnt show up till 4:30 and blamed it on Pearl Jam going way over there time, the fans made such a mess and the stage had to be fixed that a few hours later they werent able to open it up again for Israel Vibration and I missed them.
Should they try to do it again and put another big name in that slot to prove to Ye that he is a Douche or should they just let the headliner close the stage and play as long as they want without having to worry about getting off so the next act can prepare for there show?
I really liked the idea of Kanye playing that late and thought it would of been an awesome show had he shown up. It made me wonder weather you think they would try to do it again.
That's not to say that I wouldn't like another late night mainstage performance. I think there's a lot of acts who would murder a late night set on the What Stage. I'm just not sure they'd do it for anyone else, at least not for a year or two.

Oh, no need to remind me, I definitely remember. He was up against Jack Johnson, and I was originally going to try to catch half of each. That was actually one of my biggest conflicts, so I was relieved when they changed it. And to be honest, Superfly really did mess up there by not initially scheduling him for late night. I mean, it is the friggin' 'Glow in the Dark' tour. But Mr. Egotistical had to think he was the greatest, most important act on the entire farm and demand that he have everything his way.
At least now they know what they have to do to secure the proper permits for a late night What Stage performance. I'd love to see some more artists tear it up in front of 40,000+ people at 2:00 AM.
I'd say do it only if you have a performer that needs it. If there's a band that's playing latenight and is big enough to need the What Stage, I think they would do it better the 2nd time.

After the Kanye fiasco, it is rather evident that there does not need to be a latenight act on Which stage.
I watched about 30-40 minutes of Kanye's horrendous show before deciding to return to camp. I was hoping to catch some rest, but his terrible music was blaring so loudly that I couldn't sleep. Thankfully, his show didn't last very long. However, I was tired all day on Sunday after basically getting zero hours of sleep the night beforehand. It is hard enough to sleep at 'roo without the main stage blasting at 3 am.

Its funny, I must have gotten around 10 hours of sleep over the 4 nights and I was never tired, man I love Bonnaroo.
The thing is, these festivals are all getting bigger, they are going to have to figure out something because they will probably have just as many or more bands that are headline material (Pearl Jam, Metallica, Widespread, Jack, and Kanye) and only 3 headline nights. They may need to have a headliner on Thursday or something because if they have 4 headliners for 3 nights it obviously doesnt work.
The only options I see it, if the Festival is trying to keep up with others festivals is: - Have a Thursday Headliner - Do what they did on Saturday and have two headliners play back to back (one of my favorite moments this Bonnaroo was Jack Johnson and Eddie Vedder playing together, thats something that only us 80,000 will ever get the chance to see, and I would love to see more of it). I dont think there are many other comedians that have a large enough fanbase to hold down "What" like Chris Rock did before Metallica so maybe another headliner could slide in there. - Have a Headliner rock "What" late night like they let Kanye do.
And I hate to say this, but I honestly wouldn't like a What Stage headliner...at 4 AM when I was trying to pass out and Kanye was just coming on, I was NOT a happy camper. And I was way out in BFE in Vol Camping, so I imagine the VIPers weren't happy either...
i'm down for daft punk late night, and besides who wants to sleep through daft punk .. i can understand if people wanted to sleep during kanye because he made an ass of himself and im pretty embarrassed/disappointed with myself that i actually stayed until 530-- not worth it.
I kind of doubt this will happen. Here's my reasoning.... first off, as mentioned before, Kanye was not originally scheduled to play on the main stage. Only after asking to be put there was he put there, and in that time slot. No one has ever done it before, and wouldn't have happened last year had Kanye not lobbied for it. Second, the whole thing was a god awful ordeal, and caused the biggest uproar of Bonnaroo's history. I doubt they would want to go that route again. Third, the entire weekend was packed with soooo many acts, it's not as if they can schedule more bands, it's just simply not feasible. They've got no more slots..... That will be the amount of bands that is gonna be playing, give or take 5 or 6 I'd say. You only have so much money to allot bands, therefore only leaving so much money for "headling" acts, people warranting to play that stage and that time slot.
The only way I could see this happen is if they put someone in the slot that would not need much time to set up. Daft Punk kind of seems unfeasible, as much as I don't want to say it, because if you look at their last tour, with the Pyramid and all, it was taking a verrry long time to set up. That set was rather elaborate.
Just my two cents here...

I'd put Beastie Boys up there for a late night show too, or Fatboy Slim...I don't think there's anything wrong with using the main stage for late night, esp. if it's someone who is going to draw a huge crowd. The fact that Kanye was complete quack-up shouldn't hurt future shows, and if there are going to be A LOT of people, it is the best venue by far.

I think it will inevitably happen again, though I'm not certain it will be this year.
The festival scene around the country seems to be growing and getting more competitive as a result. Of course, the big ones will keep trying to up the ante.
I can't see any major additions to Centeroo without an expansion, so I figure they've got to get more mileage out of the space and time currently available. The renovated Comedy Tent is an example of that working well; the Kanye debacle is an example of that working poorly. I think it's fair to say that the debacle was more of a problem specific to that performer, rather than a problem with a What Stage late-night in general. The choice of Kanye in particular just came with too much baggage (elaborate set-up, ego, partying in Atlanta) for it to run smoothly this year, when they were trying something for the first time.
But the fact that there was a What Stage late-night show at all shows that the local authorities are fine with it happening. It's just a matter of booking another bigger-than-Which act who would work well in that schedule.
I have a friend who used to live here but moved away, whom I usually only see at Bonnaroo these days. He made a rare return visit back in August, and the then-potential Phish reunion came up in conversation. Back then, I shared with him a prediction: if Phish reunites, then they'll probably get a conventional headliner slot and a late-night slot (probably different nights) at Bonnaroo 2009. My "if" part came true, but it'll be a few more months before I know about the "then" part...

Not at all trying to stand up for Kanye, but Israel Vibration was moved to The Other Tent when Kanye's set was moved, not because of anything broken on the What Stage. Another vote for Daft Punk here.
lets not forget that they had jack johnson into pearl jam who played later because of that. I think if they revert back to the old schedule....headliner playing till 11:00, then there is plenty of time to set up for a late night 2:45 main stage act.

Just because Kayne F'ed it up doesn't mean that this option should not be left open in certain cases. I think if the situation calls for it why the hell not? I for sure would not mind seeing a late night act on the What stage with a ton of people.

In theory the Kanye show was an awesome idea, big performer, late night, big set, awesome light show...of course we all know how that turned out. However I think if you put Daft Punk in this same slot it could go down as something very epic.

I don't care one way or the other, but I agree with the too much statement. I think having a late night act on the What Stage is just too much going on at night. I like all the stages in Centeroo going on. It fits the fest better, imo. Plus, it allows the headliner to go over, if need be.
I agree with scalabrine on the Thursday headliner. I think it will definitely happen within the next few years. This year, we basically had five musicians who were given headliner status - Metallica, Pearl Jam, Widespread Panic, Jack Johnson and Kanye West.
Kanye demanded that he be given what was essentially headliner status, and as a result, Jack Johnson then had a virtually uncontested main stage performance.

This logic seems extremely flawed to me. How can Kanye's actions be any indication of how future acts would treat a late-night main stage timeslot? I think that just because the first person ever to get the honor of a late-night performance on the main stage decided to royally screw it up by engaging in some supreme douchebaggery, that doesn't mean everyone would.

why not put the dead ont the what stage for late night.....not only could you enjoy the show if u wanted <id be upfront.......but the dead is relatively easy to fall asleep to
