look on austin.craigslist.com for wristbands. you can always meet up with someone once in austin and pick one up. i'm on couchsurfing.com, and have a couple people staying with me who are coming without badges or wristbands, and that's what they might do.
i honestly don't know a whole lot about how the whole thing works...seems a little complicated to me, and the scene isn't really my style, though there are several bands i'm always willing to try and get in for.
It is a little complicated the first time simply because there are entirely too many choices! Honestly, the only reason to get a wristband is if you plan on hitting up shows that you think will be popular in the evening at venues that aren't selling tickets for a specific performance (eg. The Decemberists at Stubbs...tickets will not be sold, you must have a wristband or badge). For that particular show, even with a wristband you need to plan to get there very early to ensure you'll get in because badges take precedence over wristbands. That said, there are hundreds of day parties that are free, many of which offer free food and drinks, and it's possible to do the entire festival on the cheap.
If anyone going has questions, feel free to PM me. I am by no means an expert, but having been before I might be able to help you out.

Head back to Scoot inn for reflection eternal w Talib and John Forte. Leave my friends head to red river at 1:20, walk to Stubb's catch the end of Ben Harper for free.
I dont see why we dont make a bigger deal out of sxsw, its not ridiculously crowded, and there are so many bands playing everywhere. And i mean everywhere, theres always music coming from any direction. Greatness.

^^ honestly, this year seems to be WAYYYYYY less crowded than last year. i think the economy really took it's toll. i remember trying to navigate downtown last year and it was just hellish at times.
having said that, i'm having a blast this year. caught J. Tillman from fleet foxes and eli "paperboy" reed yesterday for free at peckerheads. today i'm catching my friend's band at 1 at fado(4th and lavaca), and tomorrow it's erykah badu and explosions in the sky. all for free!! yay austin ;D
I think the reason it seems less crowded is two-fold: 1) Less premiere acts were announced up front. 2) They've added more events to South and East Austin along with a ton of day parties along the Drag. It's spread out all over the place this year, more so than previous years.

Today. Day party at my friends house, free beer and bands playing on the front porch on 7th st. At 8, Relentless7 2 hour Austin City Limits taping show that we barely made it into and was amazing. Like ridiculously quacking amazing. Super fucking riculously amazing. Then back to sixth to wait in line for MSTRKRFT, then get shut out waiting near the entrance gate for badges only then on and the crowd starts a mini dance party riot in an alley that cops on horses cleared out completely. After that Monotonix drummed on top of crowds and poop.
Need to get home and deal with my photos and videos.

I saw a lot of great acts that I didn't even know existed, so I think my mission was accomplished. Would have been nice to see Metallica, but I'll live. Caroline Wonderland, Nomo (happened to randomly stumble into this show, SO AWESOME!), and Ben Harper were the highlights of the weekend.
I also found it very interesting to see Devo and The Proclaimers. I know there are probably a lot of stereotypes about bands from that era, but it was very enlightening to see how each group handled their careers since their big hits.
I've watched a ton of it on Directv's 101 Channel over the weekend. Ben Harper and the Relentless 7 was the best one I saw. Wish they had more shows on that channel
