i liked 07 a lot... cheese, NMAS, panic, mule, ... i had a blast
hopefully they pull something like that this year!
I agree. I think 07 had the best mix of genres. Plenty of jam bands, plenty of rock bands, plenty of indie rock bands. Maybe lacking on the hip hop front.
I also enjoyed the cabaret tent and The Yard Dogs Road Show. I was kind of disappointed with the karaoke bar (might have been fun for those who did it, but not fun for anyone within earshot) this year after having The Preservation Hall Jazz Band/New Orleans Bingo Show in '06 and the cabaret tent in '07

Man that was fun I wish Aquarium Rescue unit was still around. Jeff Sipes, Jimmy Herring just WOW. Oh yeah and Phish was the equivalent of the small stage at All Good ;D .

i was considering pulling out a coachella line-up, but instead i'll pull out this little gem: intonation music festival 2005 (now called pitchfork music festival).
now this certainly isn't the best line-up i've attended as far as quantity goes. i've been to plenty of other festivals with more great/legendary artists, but intonation '05 had the best hit-to-miss ratio. often, even the best festivals have some lame acts, but basically every single artist there was at least solid.
it has a special place in my heart as the first festival that i drove a long distance to see (dallas to chicago). also, this is probably the best value i've gotten on a festival line-up; my ticket to this festival cost $25.
Saturday, July 16
Headliner: Tortoise
Death from Above 1979, The Go! Team, Broken Social Scene, Four Tet, Magnolia Electric Co., A.C. Newman, The M's, Head of Femur, Pelican, Prefuse 73, Will Oldham, Jean Grae

Headliner: The Decemberists
Les Savy Fav, The Wrens, Deerhoof, Andrew Bird, Out Hud, Xiu Xiu, Dungen, The Hold Steady, Thunderbirds Are Now!, Diplo, El-P

I think I'm gonna have to go with this year's Pitchfork Festival. Like johncagebubblegum said about Intonation in '05, there were very few misses this year. Every band I saw, I enjoyed thoroughly. I wasn't able to attend Friday night, but if I had, Public Enemy, Mission of Burma, and Sebadoh would've certainly added to the radness.
I ended up seeing:
Animal Collective Spoon Jarvis Cocker Dinosaur Jr. The Hold Steady Spiritualized !!! Ghostface Killah and Raekwon Vampire Weekend Les Savy Fav Fleet Foxes The Apples In Stereo Caribou Boris Titus Andronicus The Dodos A Hawk and a Hacksaw High Places Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar
All for 50 bucks! Not bad at all.
Second place is Bonnaroo '06, and if it hadn't been my first festival, it'd probably be my favorite. Being unprepared for the way things work, I ended up missing out on alot of stuff I wanted to see. It was still totally worth it though, I got to see Radiohead, Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket, Ben Folds, Damian Marley, among others. Looking at the lineup though, I really wish I could go back in time and do it all over again, because I know I could find a way to fit in Buddy Guy, Sonic Youth, Les Claypool, Cat Power, The Dresden Dolls, Devendra Banhart, Andrew Bird, and all the other greatness I missed out on. Ah well, c'est la vie.
Best one-day lineup I've seen so far was Sasquatch 2005 - Pixies, Modest Mouse, Kanye West (a very good show, this was between the first & second cds), Arcade Fire, Wilco, Bloc Party, Ray Lamontagne, Be Good Tanyas, Jem, at the guardrail for an awesome Dears set and BRDuo, and met Matisyahu.

Either Roo07 (TOOL, White Stripes, Flaming Lips, Kings of Leon, Cold War Kids, The Roots) or Echo07 (The Flaming Lips, GZA, Les Claypool, Cypress Hill, Man Man, The Roots, MSTRKRFT)
All 3 Roos I've been to have had great line-ups. This past one (08) didn't look too good to me on paper, but I found almost nothing but greatness this past year.
I'd have to go with Roo 07... Ralph Stanley, Girl Talk, Black Angels, Annuals, Police, Gov't Mule, Flaming Lips, String Cheese Incident, DJ Shadow, Ornette Coleman, Tortoise, James Blood Ulmer, Junior Brown, Superjam with ?uestlove JPJ and Harper, Tool, The Roots, Wolfmother, Manu Chao, Bob Weir and Ratdog, Wilco, The White Stripes, Spoon, El- P, Philadelphia Experiment, Ravi Coltrane, etc. etc. etc.
I swear, my opinion of my favorite Roo changes everytime I sit down and talk about a particular Roo.
Individual day? Either Saturday 06 (Dungen, Clap Your Hands, Elvis Costello, Beck, Radiohead) or Friday 07 (James Blood Ulmer, Tortoise, The Roots, Tool, Superjam, DJ Shadow).

It is a tossup between Roo 07 and Warren Haynes' Xmas Jam from 08. There were more acts at Roo, of course, but the quality and magic that occured at The Jam just may win out.
I'm not saying it's the best, but possibly the most surprising was the Dickson Street Music Festival in my hometown last year. They had Charlie Daniels Band, .38 Special, and Shooter Jennings (didn't go to this one, but wish I had seen the Charlie Daniels Band) one day, and Michael Franti, Sonic Youth, and Little Feat the next. The awesome thing about it being a smaller local thing was that I was front and center for Sonic Youth. The unfortunate thing about it being a smaller local thing is that the stupid hipsters who were standing around me didn't know how to act at a show like that and ended up pogo'ing/moshing for no reason. I know the organizers received some money to do it again and I'm hoping they do because it actually is a pretty cool little mini-festival. It's surrounded by bars! lol
But my favorite is definitely Roo '06 because it was my first Roo and my first festival. I was actually thinking about it on my way to work this morning. It truly changed my life forever.
Not sure about best festival but the best day in music ever was either bonnaroo 2003 (Warren Haynes solo, galactic, james brown, the dead) or bonnaroo 2008 (donovan frankenreiter, ozomatli, bb king, jack johnson, pearl jam) or ACL 2008 (langhorne slim, jose gonzalez, drive by truckers, eryka badu, mason jennings, yonder mountain, beck)
