My prediction is a Phish regular headline slot Friday night, 3 hours or so, a set list that's on the more accessible to hook the newbies (maybe some covers) and a performance that will leave all sayin' holy sht im can't wait for tomorow night. Saturday late night will be epic jammed out face-melting glory with guest appearances and endless jams until the sun comes up.
im new to phish. dont hate me - im not sure why i dont know more about them. i like a lot of good music. its sorta strange. can you guys direct me to the best cd to start with in order to begin my transformation into a phishphan?
im very tempted on starting a thread for phish newbs (myself absolutely included) and having a weekly discussion on each album.
i know, i know - live band. i get it. but im not going to learn any lyrics listening to a 20 minute improv jam - i need the reference material.
WSP last year stopped playing at exactly. I looked at my watch as the fireworks were going on and it was 11:59. I'm sure that has something to do with permits and whatnot.
There was fireworks? I saw like small bottle rockets and such that people have brought into Centeroo - but I don't remember any professional-grade fireworks display. Was I just tripping that hard or was there not a fireworks display? I don't remember a Sunday night fireworks display any of the last 4 years I have gone.

The only fireworks I remember were during Metallica.
I dled a few albums and bootlegs and am digging what ive found so far. They are hard to get into at first but there starting to grow on me. Im not a big fan of the vocals or lyrics but once they start jamming out things start to get interesting. I doubt that Im ever going to become a phishhead or anything but im def. more excited for them at Bonnaroo then I was at first. Just for reference how highly regarded are the Atlanta 93 shows because thats what ive mostly been listening too.

the second night, 2/20/93, has been a fan favorite for 15 years. That is really one of those shows that shows off the musical prowess of a crazy Phish show. The Mike's Song is littered with teases of other Phish songs such as Lizards, Stash, and Tweezer. Weekapaug gets crazy with Rock and Roll all night and Have Mercy lyrics. Overall those are great great shows, but truth be told, Phish sounds much much different today than they did in 1993.

Ive considered the fact that they probably sound alot different but I decided to start back in the early-mid 90s because from reading around alot of people seemed to deem this the golden era of Phish. Any recommendations of shows from their most recent tour that are good?

Yea, you made the right choice, I was just bracing you for the fact that much has changed about them from 15 years ago. In 1995 they started taking a much more improv-heavy approach, and in 1997 really expanded that even further. Everything since 97 has been slower, mellower, more groove-oriented, less gung-ho. If you listen to that 93 Roxy set, Trey is just shredding away a million miles a second in some of those songs. He still does that, but to a much less degree. As the rest of the band started stepping up their game, he really backed off, especially from 97 on, and allowed them to take more control.
Recent shows that I would recommend: 6/24/04 6/20/04 12/29/03 12/30/03 8/2/03 7/15/03 3/1/03 2/28/08 2/20/03 2/18/03 10/5/00 9/18/00 7/15/00 7/12/00 6/24/00 6/14/00 12/18/99 12/2/99 9/29/99 7/25/99 7/23/99 7/13/99 7/4/99 12/29/98 11/29/98 11/15/98 11/2/98 10/31/08 10/30/98 All of summer 98 Island Tour 98 (april 98) All of Fall 97 All of summer 97
should be a good start.
FWIW, I believe Phish peaked musically from November 1997 to April 1998

Thanks, Ill def. check some of those shows out. I def. see why so many people love this band but I can tell that its not a band that you just jump into and love right away but a band that grows on you. Im sure by the time Roo rolls around ill be a big fan.

I'll be honest with you, becoming a Phish fan isn't something that happens by listening to a tape. I'm not saying you have to see Phish to like them, but there is a certain magic that happens under those lights that doesn't truly expose itself in all its glory through a recording. The power of their live show is second to none, and, frankly, recordings don't do it justice.
I've said it before in this thread and I'll say it again, 13 years ago they changed my life forever. By the 3rd song in the first set on that fateful night, I began to morph into something other than the 17 year old kid who entered the building, and I truly have not been the same since.

i understand what you mean - i say the same thing about my morning jacket. i like their cds but they sounds very different live - its impossible to explain to people what they are like live because they have heard them on cd.
i sure thank you all for the help. im SURE i will be a huge fan by rootime.
I would definitely put My Morning Jacket in the category of bands that you need to see to feel.
They have a certain raw power that is just like what Phish has but in a different way. My Morning Jacket captures the energy in the air and feeds it to the audience. The audience reciprocates that energy, and it becomes a circular effect building like this cataclysmic ball of energy waiting to explode throughout the band and audience.
Yes Yes Yes. It is for this reason that my wife and I will be seeing them tear down the Garden on NYE. MMJ is the new blood.

Karma for that. I told my girlfriend that if money were no object and I could do anything for New Year's it would be front row in my tails at MSG. MMJ is the only band I've seen since Phish to gather the energy in a room (or field) like you spoke about. Glad it wasn't just me.

same here... but ive never even listened to mmj... i think im just gonna let the show be my first listen
damnit! i hate missing a good argument. i love how people are talking about the contracts superfly has with phish that say no other fests. its funny poop. these mythical contracts for this mythical line up. did zeppelin make that agreement too? i still say its way more likely that jay-z or guns n roses will play then phish. and if phish does play i doubt they would sign anything that would limit them to playing roo and only roo. its phish. after last year superfly would floss with treys brownish red butt hairs to have phish save roo. they arent going to be giving them silly clauses. its phish. and if they play roo it seems to me it would be more likely that they would play other fests too or atleast have their own fest and not sign some ridiculous clause with roo. and i still say its crazy talk. phish isnt going to play roo. what now that rolling stone mentioned it as a rumor its more likely??? lol phish rumors with roo happen every year. and led zeppelin was playing last year. and mtv bought it. the excitement of the phish reunion has got ya all buying into it. its really pretty laughable. its far more likely that we will finally see another fest happening on the roo farm and that this fest will feature phish. maybe in september. but hey maybe its true. if so ill see you there. (i know your all excited for that) and if phish is on tour and playing fests then i dont see why they cant play 10klf, echo, or rothbury. sure they cant have 100,000 people but if there is a tour and 3 or 4 phests they dont need to hold 100,000. maybe theres not much talk about that type of thing happening but that dosent mean poop. i think its more believable that phish is goin to do a 3 night stand in my back yard then it is that superfly has contracts with all sorts of silly clauses that phish wouldnt agree to. and why would superfly even ask for something like that???? if phish plays roo it sells out no matter what. it dosent matter if phish is playing rothbury 2 weeks after roo and 10klf 2 weeks after that. they will all sell out easily. it just dosent make any sense. all of these rumors is pretty funny and hard to believe if you ask me. which im sure no one did. but there ya go anyhow.
btw- its good to see the opinion police are still on patrol. i thought maybe without me keeping them on their toes that an opinion differing from theirs might have fallen through the cracks.
Once again, The Dude shows what a f*ckin moron he is. Let me guess, you've never seen Phish either? You are clearly completely unaware that Phish is managed by Coran Capshaw and Red Light Communications, who are heavily involved in Bonnaroo. AND LOL at Phish playing 10K lakes. You're a grade A idiot, Dude, why you even come here when you hate Bonnaroo so much makes me laugh. You just come to spout hippified nonsense encrusted with granola that is anti-Bonnaroo at all turns.
The pretendica hippies like Keith make me laugh so f*cking hard. They think they know what is best for Phish and Bonnaroo etc. etc. Granola all the way. Forget that it's a business, put the hippie mentality first. What these pretendica hippies always ALWAYS miss is that neither Phish nor Bonnaroo cares about what hippies think. Both want to create a genuine music experience in which people from all walks of life can embrace.
If you don't get that, you flat out don't get Phish or Bonnaroo.
go fvck yourself you fvcking douchcougar. youre a grade a piece of shit and its people like you that make "us" not like bonnaroo. i dont give 2 sh!ts what bonnaroo does. its a joke. but when morons start talking about phish being made to sign contracts that say they wont play any other fests i have to say something. roo is a joke. 98 percent of the ticket buyers are custies and assh0les like your self. i hopesomeone does burn down the bobble heads. maybe then we can get roo gone forever. damn i miss roo and inforoo from 4 years ago. damn i despise fvcking dipshits like you. fvcking douchebag! roo attendees are the pretenders. just admit it. metallica, tool, the police, kanye etc... its a fvcking mtv mainstream fest for dipsh!ts like yourself.
this is true. dude, ive put up with a lot of your crap on this board for a long time. ive tried to ignore it, and argue, but its pointless. ive managed to restrain myself up until now only by a monumental showing of raw will power, however i cant no longer contain myself. i don't like myself for what im about to do, and i wish there was another way, but i just dont see one.
so im sorry, but dude, im gonna have to smite you. hopefully after this you will have learned your lesson and it will be the last time.
lol... i love nol.. well im exalting you! i hope you learn your lesson!

The Great and Powerful Trash Heap has spoken Mwaaaaaa
and yes there are clauses. but radiohead played other fests. wsp plays other fest. every headliner plays other fests. they sold 60000 tickets with metallica. they want phish to come save roo. they dont give a shit if they play other fests. its so silly.
and i normally dont call people names or attack them directly. but i guess everyones cool with it now. i didnt see anyone telling this asswipe to not be a douche so i guess im cool to do it too.
There is only one festival with the infrastructure, size, and experience to handle Phish. Like or not it is Bonnaroo. Don't worry Dude I am sure it will sound great from the lot at Hampton, you can let a custie poser hippie like me rage and get my face melted seeing Phish at 'roo knowing I can do whatever I want and just have to walk home to my tent. I am sure you will get some Veggie Burritos sold with all the "real" hippies.
