lol, I'm probably the only person around here who's happy for the police. ;D
I love Phish, but I am anti-druqs. I don't want to relish anyone's misfortune of being arrested, but I won't feel sorry for them either because they got what they deserved.
Thats a pretty poor way of putting it. Its not like Phish wanted to put people in jail. It was a part of the contract they worked out with the city. To say someone should thank the band for being arrested is pretty much retarded. The only thing the band explicitly tried to get cracked down on was illegal merchandise.
Hmmm - so you have an inside line with the band and you know that for sure? The fact is - the band paid for the police and the police did their job - whether it was to crack down on illegal merchandise or not - they also cracked down on illegal substances - so - Phish paid for people to get busted - plain and simple.
While I have no inside line with the band I have worked extensively with concert and event planning and all but 100% know that it was in the contract.
The fact is that when you have an event that size it must be approved. In doing so one of the agreements was that the band would pay for the extra police that had to be brought in from neighboring communities. Once again you are much more than even oversimplifying it. The band has zero interest with sending people to jail. Trust me if they had their way they wouldnt be spending the tens of thousands of dollars on police. But if they wanted to have a weekend show then they had to foot the bill. Do you not realize that Bonnaroo does the same thing in Manchester? So by your logic Bonnaroo pays for people to get busted - plian and simple. Only its not quite the case.
feel free to smite me though

The artist ALWAYS has to pay for increased security. Phish had no alternative. The liability cost of NOT paying for extra police would have been far more costly. 200 arrests out of 50,000 phans isn't too bad. The "million dollars" is bunk... the po po always overvalue everything they get to look better. That $20 of dirt is valued at $120.
lol, I'm probably the only person around here who's happy for the police. ;D

Sounds pretty ignorant to me. Good luck with that. I sure as heck hope you don't drink alcohol or take any kind of prescription medication. That would be hypocritical.
Yeah 200 out of 75,000 which is what the Yahoo article says is not much at all. Especially since a lot of people didn't have a ticket, and just showed up for the extracurricular activities. As to Phish paying for the added force, yeah of course they did, they always have and always will. So do the Stones if they come to town, so did Floyd when I aw them in 94. I don't blame the band, or feel a need to thank them if I get in trouble, they have liability just like everyone else. As to the 1.2 Million, well its not like the police really know what poop costs anyway,.
So there is a pretty glaring error in this article. The Grateful Dead did not play that Hampton show he references. I am pretty sure it was some band called The Wizards.
Sheesh, been through this conversation more than once. I do not have a problem with druqs. BUt, right or wrong, they are against the law. People knew there would be a ton of police around. So they got what they deserved. As opposed to alcohol and prescribed medicine?????? As long as they are used within the law.....hypocritical?? Huh?

Why, because one is completely legal in this country and the other isn't? I respect your position, and it's not even like I have a problem with the legalization of certain substances, but I'm saying if you do something illegal you shouldn't moan over getting arrested for it. That's an utterly simple truth; nothing ignorant or hypocritical about it.
And thanks for the smite. I knew it was coming, so it's nice to get it over with.

^Phish has had trouble with communities in the past/police departments etc. By making an effort, it keeps additional heat off the scene going forward.
200 over 3 days and out of 80,000 really isn't a big deal (that's one out of 400 people). Most of whom were probably drunk college kids that probably mouthed off to a cop when asked to calm down or something similar (I graduated 2 years ago. Drunk college kids do this. Fortunately it's impossible to get arrested in Providence unless you stab/shoot somebody.) These kids probably had shit on them so they get booked for disorderly and possesion and therefore is a drug charge.
Then they probably caught one dumbass (for having that much with him at a place that is going to be closely scrutinized) with massive quantity of corn in his trunk, and you have your big $$$, which is always way more (according to the police) than it is actually worth.
Phish, by providing the police enforcement, makes them look good to venues/communities, many of whom they've had trouble with in the past. If Phish did nothing about lot security, these communities might put double the police presence than Phish offered. Although the undercovers are a bit much, imo.
Longstory short, if you can keep in control and not draw attention to yourself, you're not going to have a problem.

I did and it had nothing to do with your opinion - it had to do with the fact that you used the word "retarded" and I find this word very offensive - even when used in the correct connotation. there are alternative words that can be used

Well thats retarded. Just joking dont get bent out of shape I had to do it. Anyway thats your right to be offended by a word, so have at it. Its equally my right to not be offended in any way by it so I wont smite you in return, you know mentally because you removed the option.
Hey why not back to the Phish discussion instead of justifying smites.

Thanks to the people who went made the effort to restore my karma. I respect differing opinions, but not name-calling.
EDIT: lol, I got smote again while making this post. Oh well, thanks all the same.
I listened to Friday's show, but not Saturday's or Sunday's yet. Overall they sounded great, really jumped back into form quite easily despite the time that's passed. I agree that Page was clearly the MVP, with some nice new tricks up his sleeve. My only complaint would be what a sloppy job they did with one of my very favorite Phish tunes, "Taste". But they made up for it with "YEM".

Good grief. Someone tells you something you said is offensive so you said it again?
It's not a matter of someone's right to be offended, it's about courtesy.
I try not to participate in snark, but I can certainly understand why some of the folks who have been around here for a while (not referencing anyone in particular) are getting annoyed by some of the newer posters.
Saying something is within the law does not make u invinvcible to criticism. Alcohol has been banned in this country just as slavery has been legal and women couldnt vote. Just because something is legal doesnt make it right. and vice verca.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

I was just joking around for crying out loud. While I wont try to take jabs at people I also dont think I should have to change in order to fit what someone else thinks is the right way to live, speak, or think. This is a Bonnaroo board right? So I am aloud to have my own opinions aren't I? For all anyone knows I could be extremely offended by the word ______ but I dont think anyone else should change their beliefs to fit mine or their life to appease me. And I WAS JOKING.
Whatever be offended if you want, laugh if you want, scream if you want. Thats your right to do so. If we were all the same this site and Bonnaroo wouldnt exist. If everyday is a sunny day then whats a sunny day?
It is not a matter of morality or right vs wrong. It is a matter of reality. If something is against the law and you do it anyway and get caught you need to face the penalty. At least until the law changes.

You are allowed to have your opinion whether you're on the Bonnaroo board or not. But unless you are three years old, it's basic human decency to refrain from certain behavior once someone tells you it has offended them. If she's offended by the word "retarded", let common sense prevail and don't use it again, even in jest. No one's trying to strip you of your rights, just asking that you be a little more sensitive to fellow board members.
I simply disagree I dont think you should have to change because one person that you have never met and may never meet on an internet messageboard for a weekend festival says they dont like 1 of the words you use.
That being said I wont use the word retarded towards justmeg anymore. And when I did it the second time it was to make light.
Call it what you will, call me an ass or a three year old. I could be offended by half the things I read or see I just dont feel the need to tell you to change or limit what you say around me in order for my surrounding to be less offensive based off of what I deem offensive. I feel we all have the right to be offended by whatever we want. I do not feel we have the right to tell others how to live based off of what offends us.

The point you seem to be making, getfresh, is that you have a right to act in a manner offensive and/or rude to otheres. Well, I guess you do, but then others have a right to tell you you are being offensive and rude.
And just plain ridiculous, with this kind of post: "I have been to a good many Phish shos and festivals and the energy in that place on Friday nght was likely as strong as the energy on the frontlines at Normandy"
Yeah, fans at a show are JUST LIKE people fighting for their lives in battle. This kind of nonsense is what gives Phish fans a bad name.

Seriously???? Yes that exactly what I meant. That fans at a show are JUST LIKE people fighting for their lives. Get over yourself. It was a goofy analogy...
a⋅nal⋅o⋅gy [uh-nal-uh-jee] –noun, plural -gies. 1. a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based: the analogy between the heart and a pump. 2. similarity or comparability: I see no analogy between your problem and mine. 3. Biology. an analogous relationship. 4. Linguistics. a. the process by which words or phrases are created or re-formed according to existing patterns in the language, as when shoon was re-formed as shoes, when -ize is added to nouns like winter to form verbs, or when a child says foots for feet. b. a form resulting from such a process. 5. Logic. a form of reasoning in which one thing is inferred to be similar to another thing in a certain respect, on the basis of the known similarity between the things in other respects.
Is a heart a gas pump? Nope. Just like the phish show wasnt war. But was there an overwhelming energy level that could shake walls? YES
I dont see how proclaiming that it was a killer show with an insane amount of energy gives anyone a bad name. You should quit taking everything so seriously and enjoy life a bit more.

This is a phish thread, on inforoo. Nobody is in here with bad intentions. Things are being taken out of context. Let's give everyone the benefit of the doubt, all eat some corn, chill out and share in the groove (and keep the convo on Phish please).
