Here is one of the latest pictures. I need to drop around 12ish pounds by late spring. Here is the problem..When I was in my late 20's I quit smoking and started to try and eat all kinds of food and drink some of the heavier beers. Along with that all the food, snacks and drink are free where I work so that does not help any. I need to get back to around 180ish and its getting harder as I approach 40 So if I lay off the snacks and start going for my daily walk that should help.
Oh ..I need to go..there are cookies coming out of the oven

Well my new job has me carrying 30lbs of beer up and down stairs for 3 hrs... yes i'm a beer vendor... at busch stadium. I was a lil out of shape, but I'm already starting to be in much better shape.
Nice! Well let's see here... I weigh in at about 165-170 right now, which doesn't sound too bad probably, except that I'm all of five feet tall. That means beer gut, love handles, and the beginning of a second chin. These things dismay me, as I used to be in very good shape. I've started working out at the YMCA, though I don't really know what I'm doing so if anyone has any kind of fitness plan that would help, please, let me know. I generally go in for about an hour, run a lap and walk a couple laps on the indoor track, do some 'weighted' situps in the weight room - 25 lbs and about 25 reps forward, and maybe 15 or 20 on each side. Then I hit the machines, keeping the weight relatively low (don't want to strain anything) and kind of randomly pick 5 or 6 machines to work on for the day. Some of them I hit every time I go in, some of them I just hit on chance. Bad technique? I don't know. I usually finish up by "playing" some racquetball by myself, which just consists of running around the little cube room trying to hit the ball. Feels like good exercise, gets my heart rate up anyway and I develop a mean sweat.
I'm also trying to eat less and in a healthier manner. I am finding both of these things fairly difficult. I don't have a problem with eating healthy things, I have a problem not eating unhealthy things when they are made available to me, i.e. when my roommate cooks up some amazing but terrible casserole filled with cheeses and butters and who knows what else. And I find it difficult to eat only small portions. I can do it for a few days before the madness kicks in and I suddenly scarf down a pound of food. And then there's beer. I like my beer good and hoppy. Unfortunately that means fairly high in caloric quantities. Maybe I should stick to whiskey. haha. Anyone got any good tips based on this info? I would appreciate it. Also, anything you guys do while you're just sitting around that helps you get in shape? I feel like I should have some dumbbells sitting by my desk and couch...

POrtable pullup bars for work, light dumb bells, and I have a long stick that bends in the middle to simulate chest fly. Won't do much for weight loss.
Actually I just need to bring the P90X dvds over so you can burn them. You'd be able to avoid the gym if you wanted. Maybe we should start doing the P90X at my house. Cmon Wolfaroo, be my workout buddy?

Ok, so I can relate to where you're coming from (esp. the good beer part). Since the beginning of the month I've dedicated myself to getting in shape and here is what has worked for me.
1. I bought and have been using the Diet Power software www.dietpower.com/. I use this program to monitor my diet. At the start, I tell it what I weigh, my personal info (age, sex, etc) and what my target weight is and when I want to reach it. It will tell you if it is doable and how difficult it will be. The next part is tricky, but it is what is key for me. You log everything that you eat and weigh yourself regularly. I've a small kitchen scale to weigh my foods. It has a database of basic foods (10,000+) and just about every fast food item you can think of. It tells you how many calories you can consume every day, you tell it what exercises you do and what you eat, it learns your personal metabolism and it adjusts your caloric intake. It doesn't tell you what to eat, but it tracks your calories and give you a daily score on how balanced your diet is (tracking everything from fat to protein to fiber to zinc). It has a bit of a learning curve, but if you keep up your logging, you will lose the weight. You can skip logging a day occasionally (like if you go out partying and don't want to be bothered monitoring intake) and it can adjust, as long as you don't do it too much. I know I sound like an ad for it, but it works for me. The list price is $50, but according to the website it is $30 until Jan 30. 2. I go to the YMCA 4-5 days a week. Find a cardio workout that works for you. For me it is stationary bike. I do 35 min a day in my target heart rate zone (there is a formula for what yours should be, google it, mine is ~134-156 bpm). A lot of the cardio machines have heart rate monitors built in, I have a Polar chestband and monitor watch, it's nice but not really needed. 35 minutes seems like a lot but it is doable. I NEED my music to do it. What works for me is hard rock/electronica mashups and Eminem (stop laughing... I said stop it!). I need something with a hard rapid beat to keep my rhythm going, YMMV. After cardio I do weights. I use the machines instead of free weights, whenever I start doing free weights I always wind up pulling a ligament or something, just a personal thing. One day I'll do legs (leg press, calf raise, leg curl, inner thigh, outer thigh), next day I do trunk (chest press, seated row, shoulder press, lat pulldown) plus I'll do abdominals every day. Keep a chart/table of what weight you do and how many reps. I favor higher weight and fewer reps, again a personal thing. However you do the workout thing, KEEP DOING IT! Even if you don't feel like it, do it anyways. Don't make it an option, if you are supposed to workout today, do it. 3. This is the REAL tough part. Gotta give up the beer. There is just no way to enjoy a realistic amount of good beer and loose weight. A good beer is up around 180-200 cal/12 oz, that's too big a hit out of a reduction diet. Once you reach target weight, OK, but beer was my worst enemy when it came to loosing weight. So you have a couple of options. 1. Drink light "beer". Not doable for me, but maybe for others. Michelob Ultra Amber has something like 90 cal/12 oz and you can ALMOST convince yourself you're drinking an actual beer. 2. Stop drinking. For me, more doable than light beer, YMMV. 3. Have some wine! A glass of red wine is ~90 cal! It is what works for me. You have to have a taste for it, but if I can have 4 glasses of a really nice red or 2 bottles of a good IPA, gotta go w/ the wine.
So, I've been following my own advice for 3 weeks and I've lost 12 pounds. I've lost more than that in fat b/c I've increased muscle. My overall goal is 46 lbs in 5 months, I'm a little ahead of that right now. For me the hunger was hard for the first couple of weeks, it gets a little better, but I'm still a little hungry all the time. Having to log everything I eat keeps me from munching out of the fridge or while I'm prepping food. Anyways, hope you're not bored w/ my story, but you asked. If anyone has any questions or critiques, feel free, either on the thread or PM.
Back in April of 2009 I was weighing in at about 233 lbs (I'm 6-1). I'm a very athletic guy, but I've always been packing on too many pounds. I committed myself to exercise every single day (yes, every day, I'm a freak) and healthy eating. By the time August came around, I had gotten down to 173 lbs. Since then I've been focusing on getting rid of any excess fat and piling on a lot of lean muscle (I'm at 169 right now). I'm going to look like Ripped Jesus come Bonnaroo.
Honestly, weight loss isn't easy, but it is EXTREMELY simple. It is all about motivation and dedication. Eat healthy and commit yourself to exercise, and the lbs will fly off.
I'm also willing to lend advice if any of you have any particular questions or queries. Just shoot me a PM. Work hard for your body and your body will work hard for you.
I have a really hard time getting down to the YMCA. I enjoy going, really, it's just a matter of lacking free time. I work 50 hours a week at my job, then I do freelance web design and some photography on the side, plus a million other distractions. I'm rarely at home (other than sleeping) for more than an hour a day. So it feels especially hard to make the commitment of going to the gym, when it equates to maybe 20 minutes of driving, 10 minutes of changing, an hour of exercise, and then at the least a 10 minute shower. It feels extremely hard to find that time. I guess I just need to drop one or two of my distractions and focus on making exercise more of a priority.
Anyway... yeah I need to drink more wine, less of everything else. Actually just drinking less of everything would probably be a good idea. I can put down some serious wine if I'm motivated. ha. I'll check out that software.

^^I find that's exactly what P90x does for you. There's ways to get huge using it, but I prefer high rep, lower weight. I don't want to be a muscle bound idiot. I just want to be lean and solid. I've never weighed over 165 so Im kind of thin. Just want to sharpen up the edges a little bit.

I just go out and kill wolves barehanded like a spartan. Seriously I am trying to stop drinking sodas and have gotten a swim membership at a local Days Inn it is like $25 a month so that is a really good deal to swim for less than a dollar a day. Am also drinking green tea. Want to get fit enough to wear a kilt!!!!!!!!!! Nah screw fit ripped!!!!!!!!!

I don't lift or go to the gym at all, and eat between 2000 and 6000 calories a day, but thanks to college track, I run about 70 miles a week. I don't have much muscle mass, but I also don't get tired easily, which is really nice when you're walking around all day at 'roo under the hot sun.
Also, does anyone want to do some 6-8 milers this year on the farm? Last year, I planned on it, but forgot running shorts at home. Hopefully, this year I'll be able to get in some mileage.

I would say the best idea to keeping the lady happy would be to get an RV with AC. I know my fiance would be miserable at Bonnaroo, so she just stays home when I goto outdoor music festivals.
I will probably take her with me to Lollapalooza or another city festival in the next few years so that if she gets bored, she can go check out the city.
It is very freeing to only have to worry about yourself.
I find that the best way to stay in shape is to stay active in something you enjoy doing. That is, something that actually takes energy and burns calories (i.e. not playing WOW). I've always been an athlete, but I hate running. I substitute basketball for running. A couple nights a week I'll play some pick-up games of basketball. It's something I really enjoy doing so I work harder at it and I do it for a longer period of time. Ultimately, if its something fun as well as strenuous I find less reasons to skip out on doing it.
Also, since it's not always convenient/appealing to head over to the gym I have a single set of dumbbells that I work out with for about 20 minutes everyday. Just doing simple curls and flys, along with pushups and crunches has kept me in decent shape. I'd still like to be much more toned by the time June rolls around. I don't want to be completely ripped, but I'd like to be comfortable taking off my shirt in Centeroo. Time to self-motivate!

I am in the same boat as well. I have been doing cardio and machines at the local Y and not drinking heavy beers. So far, so good. Keeping a file of pictures of myself to help me see my improvements/document my progress and stay motivated. All you painted boobie ladies are gonna be all over this guy ;D (or at least in my dreams).
Well, after a summer of complete depravity and a "diet be damned" attitude, I had packed on about 15 additional pounds in the period from roo till Christmas. I decided I waited way too long to get motivated last year, so before New Years I implemented some fairy radical changes to my daily activities and diet.
Dietary changes:
1) No fast food. (Not hard, since I never eat it anyway...) 2) No soda (again, not really a fan...) 3) Extreme moderation on fried foods (that one is tricky / painful) 4) Limit processed food consumption (what the hell are all those chemicals anyway?) 5) Limit beer consumption (very challenging). I pretty much only drink beer on Monday night at a free beer tasting - less than 1 pint is consumed. 6) Keep a good idea on calories consumed in a day - I could never keep an actual count, but just don't go overboard. 7) Never eat out at lunch. 8) No eating after 9 PM, ideally, nothing after 8 PM 9) Be aware that eating only 3 times a day is not the best plan - try to eat 5 or 6 smaller things throughout the day. 10) At night, chew gum instead of snacking. I'm only eating then because I'm bored anyway....
Exercise changes:
1) Work out at lunch - weights - target a different muscle group each day 2) Work out after work - cardio & maybe some weights - aim to burn at least 600 calories, but more is better. 30 - 60 minutes on the elliptical or arc trainer are suggested. 3) Switch from high weight to low weight high rep (that is proving to be the most difficult - it's somehow emasculating to curl a 25 lb dumbbell 20 times instead of 10 reps with a 50 pounder) 4) Attempt yoga 5) I've now taken 2 classes at the gym - I've been a member of Gold's Gym for about 10 years and have never taken a class. They are fun, I want to take more! The class taught me that even though I can easily endure an hour on the eliptical, 30 minutes in a class is very challenging. I'm not as fit as I might want to think.... 6) Work out other muscle groups than the norm and with a greater variety of exercises. 7) Remember the core muscles - work out the abs (they are in there!) and use those giant ball things in other exercises to make them more difficult.
FYI, I've dropped all of that extra weight already (despite a setback last week with a sales meeting that offered way too much food and drink). Since I am now at my pre-roo weight, I expect to be able to drop 20 by roo, hopefully more. Ideally 10 by Coachella - but again, hopefully more. I am now able to wear about 40% of the XL t shirt I own by roo, I will have many more fashionable shirt options

No problem! So, an update. The good news, dropped 15 lbs, still going. The bad news... turns out the exercise bike aint that good for my hips. Had chronic (3+ wks) pain in my left hip, worse after workouts. Went to my physician, diagnosed garden variety tendinitis. So no more biking and have to cut way back on lower body weight work. I was really bummed, biking was the only cardio I really did, the doc recommended the elliptical machine. I'd used one years ago and wasn't big on it. Tried one of the new ones at the local Y, wow, what a great machine. The biggest difference is that they have variable stride. It's hard to describe, but you can swing your legs in pretty much whatever way you want. You can do a conventional running stride, a long shallow cross country ski stride, or even a short and high stair climb type stride. It's nice to be able to change up if any joints start to stiffen up. Also (at least according to the machine), you burn a lot more cals when compared to the bike. 35 minutes burned 450 kcal vs 250 on the bike. Only problem is that the Y only has 2 of these nice new ones, went today and they were both occupied, had to settle for the older, fixed stride one. It was OK, a little harder on the legs though and not as enjoyable. Anyways, figured I'd share.

Yeah, I know, that's a pain. I run Linux and could not get it running in any kind of emulation, Wine, Crossover, whatever. It depends on some Microsoft database libraries that just were obscure. I actually have a small (1 gb) WinXP VirtualBox virtual machine running all the time just so I can have Diet Power available. For me, its worth it, I searched for an opem source alternative and there is nothing out there.
