my wife works with retarded people everyday..and the picture you paint of families getting their panties in a bunch over words is simply not true.
I have personal friends - not families that i work with or anything that "get their panties in a bunch" and find it offensive and I find it offensive. The fact that oen person found it offensive and said something about it should have been enough - as I just posted getfresh and I have already talked and we are cool but Burton was just being an ass and that's what i called him
fair enough...
but to moderate the boards on the whims of one persons sensitivity doesnt seem like a good idea to me.
i find mets fans offensive (especially how they smell)..but theres nothing i can do about it..so i deal

I agree with Jessie... especially when it gets to the point where the word itself is being used for no other reson than to soley and specifically to upset someone
That post may as well have said
I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you I hope i am offending you

moderating it because of my sensitivity to the word is not what is called for - but moderating it because he was being an ass about it and purposfully stirring up shit - yes - that should be handled - at a minimum with a pm from a mod. He was intentially trying to provoke me, Sassbox and viciouscircle. I include them because they are the other two that started posting that it was an offensive word.
I say next time John McCain leaves the country we bury the statue of liberty up to its neck in the sand, and rent 100,000 Gorilla costumes, so we can suprise him when he gets home.
These are hate speech. I don't see the other as such, at all.
then you must not have a special needs child or friends with special needs children because the word "retarded" is hate speech in their minds and their worlds and rocks them just as hard as a gay man being called a "f*g" or a black man being called a "n**ger"
oh and I really don't see anything wrong in calling someone an ass when they are being one - 'specially when they are purposfully being one and posting something like that with the intent of starting sh*t. It had already been said by me that the word was offensive yet he took it upon himself to post it dozens of times when the thread was already taking a turn back to what it should have been on and that was Phish.
I pm'd getfresh and we had already cleared the air between the two of us when Burton did that. It was uncalled for and he was being an ass and all I did was call it how I saw it
As the brother of someone with learning disabilities, I really don't find 'retard' to be offensive in the manner it was used. Calling somebody with such a handicap a retard is out of line, but used in general conversation is not a big deal. The word literally means slowed and has applications beyond "mentally retarded"-literally slower to develop mentally. Also Down's Syndrome and retardation are not the same thing.
I know it is used in Chemistry in reference to the slowing (or retarding) of processes.
While I'm not saying it's the most tasteful word, t's a word in the english language that has many applications and we are in our rights to do write anything that doesn't break inforoo guidelines (and they've made quite clear what words they deem inappropriate). The N word is specifically designed as a derogatory term. 2 very different things.

why even continue this - move on - the rest of us have

Since when are people not allowed to contribute to conversations on the subject. I'm not the one with multiple posts in the Phish thread about this. I said my piece in the proper location.
And it needed to be pointed out:
you must not have a special needs child or friends with special needs because word "retarded" is hate speech in their minds and their worlds and rocks them just as hard as a gay man being called a "f*g" or a black man being called a "n**ger"
This was not directed towards me, but as person with a learning disabled brother, who has volunteered throughot my life at Kids in Disability Sports and similar groups, you made a generalization about me and my opinion of the word. Your generalization is wrong and I have every right to make that point.
Well to me it is all the same thing the only difference is that society is more accepting of retard. Calling someone who did something stupid a retard is no different than calling a guy moving slow in the morning no better than a lazy n*igger. Maybe the difference is in degree but I don't see it personally. As someone who grew up with a high end Autistic Spectrum disorder, before people knew how to diagnose, and treat it, I find it a highly offensive word, and it is one I was called when I had trouble understanding social interactions in grade school. I am completely with Meg on this one, and while I respect your opinion I am gonna keep mine.

^ I agree. The word was not used in a spiteful manner. There have been some noobs trolling so people are a little more defensive than usual. I think you'll find in general the board is very open-minded and non-judgemental.
I seriously think that it is special needs that I got a warning from a mod for simply using the word retarded.
People that go to counterculture music festivals should be much more open minded and much less thin skinned.
If it helps any - I got a warning also - I don't think that you should have gotten one - burton on the other hand......maybe a warning was not enough - but I am not a mod and warnings were handing out all around.
Jess - kids are cruel and sometimes adults are cruel when they think a good won't know any better. All we can do is teach our kids right from wrong the way we see it.
Well I am over it, I am not really bothered as much by it anymore. I do think however it is an offensive word, and if you have never been called it for not understanding something when you are trying your best you just do not know how offensive it is.

I feel the need to point out that calling a person, especially one trying to learn, a retard is offensive, probably as much as as N* is. If somebody called my brother that, I'd flip my shit.
Saying that for example, Ticketmaster's online system is retarded, isn't offensive to me. It's not a word I use personally, but don't think people should be prohibited from using it, if it's not in a spiteful manner.
The meaning (personal intentions behind the word) are much more offensive than the word itself.

True to a point, and I don't generally flip my lid when people use it, otherwise I would have no friends anymore. I still think it trivializes it, and do you really like the idea of people comparing things that are inefficient or stupid to your brothers condition? Because when you call ticketmaster retarted that is what you are doing.
I actually did not get upset in the thread, but if we are gonna have a conversation on whether or not it is offensive I do feel the need to chime in.

Basically, one member here (not getfresh) saw something that would upset/offend another member here and then deliberately went out of their way to put up a post that had absolutely no purpose other than to try and upset/offend the other member
I took it out of the Phish thread where it didn't belong and put it in here because, that, IMO was the perfect example of a negative vibe on inforoo
