Just tore through a mediocre, "page turner" called The Dispatcher during my down time at a 2 day AV trade show. The book had it's moments (certain passages were extremely well written for this kind of book) but overall it lost it's way too many times and was nothing that hasn't been done hundreds of times before. If you are looking for a watered down Dennis Lehane this could be for you otherwise steer clear.

Update:
All worthwhile reads. Invisible Cities is a pretty crazy read, felt like a fever dream, in a good way. If anyone has questions about the any of these I'd be happy to give a longer review.

It's definitely a good read. Quick too.
The protagonist isn't the most likable person, but I guess that's kind of the point. It's about a poet in Madrid for a fellowship and his foibles throughout the year.
You guys. Im bummed that I havent been in here lately. Book 1 of the Engineers Trilogy sits on my end table patiently waiting for me to pick it back up... but. I confess. I got a Kindle. seriously will all the work flying it was getting cumbersome carrying around all my books. SO - since then my book club has (epic sigh) chosen the dumb old 50 Shades book for the next meeting. So of COURSE, i get them on the KIndle bc I refuse to pay for hard copies.... finished the 3 in that series (oy vey. so much trite to go around) and then I have been blinded by Kindle shopping and the one-click amazon purchasing. I have started 2 books on the Kindle, and my dear little Engineers book sits there. Staring at me. Like a puppy who knows your busy and is just sitting there patiently wagging it's tail until you show it some affection... But the awesome cover I made for the Kindle and the Kindle itself are completely distracting me!!!
I need to get up in here more often and Kindle up some books that you guys are reading. Maybe they will harden up the mush that my brain has become for subjecting it to the 50 Shades series. In the meantime, I will attempt to get some more Engineer's read. It's really good so far...

Mayo, you'll have to explain this 50 shades of grey book/s (there are multiple?! I didn't know that). I keep reading about them but no one actually says what they are about. Therefore, I assume it's about sex.
My girlfriend is reading them now and she reads me some of the ridiculous passages from it. It's basically just erotica where they tie each other up and bone all the time and say the most ridiculous things to each other about their dark and deadly loins.
EDIT: She laughs out loud fairly consistently while reading them, so I take it that they are pretty entertaining.

Yeah, JHo - It is LITERALLY Twilight, but as the author says, "I just wanted to see how it'd be if Edward and Bella weren't teenagers and could have sex more freely." (I paraphrased that.) It follows the exACT same story line SPOILERS AHEAD (if anyone really cares): There's an "uncontrollable attraction", there's the pursuit of lady, there's the comPLETEly unrealistic monetary situation and her reluctance to accept it ("oh please edward, dont buy me a car!"), there is his ridiculous need to protect her from anyone and anything, there's a breakup in the second book, a reunion, a wedding, a kid.
And in there, everywhere, is some BDSM gettin' it on. Which is the ONLY reason that this book is being hyped. It is 100% the exact same book your crazy aunt had at all your family beach trips - only there is a silver "sophisticated" necktie on the front instead of a hunky dude in a loincloth and with a boobtastic babe in his arms on the cover. LITERALLY. the same sex novel that Jackie Collins has been touting for decades.
Can you tell that the hype around this book infuriates me to no end? I was physically angry when it was chosen as the next book club book.

Noted, Jho! I will likely buy them on the Kindle. I need to name that dang thing.... All of my electronics are named.... So then I can say, "I'll let ____ get those books for me" and "Me and ___ are having some quality time tonight." Then I'll sound way more interesting.
How does everyone in here feel about some Palahniuk? sidebar: This past March a semi truck rolled onto his car. He only had a sore neck from it.

Mayo, also, you should look into your library's digital loan collection. (If the Nashville library has one, ATL is bound to have one as well) You borrow an ebook onto your e-reader for a certain amount of time.

I just read the first of those 50 Shades books. My stepdad got it for my mom for her birthday because he'd heard it was this amazing new book. My mom said, "wasn't even good smut." (I started reading it before I talked to her about what it was.)

I'm only mildly interested in Palahniuk. He's like a less talented Burroughs to me. He wants to emulate the style but misses it completely. Invisible Monsters was ok though.
I'm reading this right now:
Pretty good so far. It's a nice easy read and solid sequel to Graceling.
Any Atwood fans here? Just finished "Oryx & Crake" as well as "The Year of the Flood" for the 2nd time. Great read on both accounts.
ME! Have you read "A Handmaid's Tale"? Definitely one of her best books.
Of her bigger titles, I have yet to read alias grace and the blind assassin, LOVED handmmaids tale!! I Follow her on twitter! Lol. Oryx and crake was my first and therefore fav Atwood bood
YES. My GPS's name is Lady Darcy. My external hard drive is the F: drive, so his name is Franklin. The flip cam is named Dmitri - like a Romanian gymnast (get it, FLIP?)

Agreed, Chico. I had Invisible Monsters, think it got lost in the divorce, but I really enjoyed it. Also, enjoyed Burroughs Sellevision, which also got lost in the divorce. I should re-buy them and re-read them.

Fight Club -> Survivor -> Invisible Monsters is a great trio to start out a writing career. I love them all because I like the way they work in a theme of social commentary into the story (masculinity/purpose -> fame -> beauty). I have never liked any of his other books as much as I loved those though I think Rant is pretty great.
