Last year was my first year so I don't really know how the crowds have changed over the years but the idea that one band's fanbase is going to ruin the festival is a little ridiculous.

I completley agree but there are always people out there saying it will.

If this lineup is true, I truly think that with Phish, Beastie Boys, Bruce Springsteen, NIN, Allman Bros. Band, David Byrne, TV on the Radio, The Zac Brown Band, The Mars Volta and Paul Oakenfold all playing that this could be the most diverse as well as entertaining Bonnaroo lineup ever assembled.

^^^If they get some solid, honest-to-goodness jazz artists for the jazz tent like in '07 (enough the the N.O. love, spread it around!), I do think it could be the best lineup they've ever had.

^^^Indeed, he does some fantastic Radiohead, Beatles and Nick Drake covers in a piano trio (or solo) setting. I could see him in the tent for sure. He has lots of crossover appeal to rock and jamband people, not unlike MMW or The Bad Plus (I used to say that about the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, before Svensson died in a diving accident last year).
Mehldau is signed to Nonesuch, and they've got tons of other superb jazz artists in their roster. I wouldn't mind seeing them or another good jazz label sponsor the tent, á la Blue Note in '07.
Folks tend to remind me of that lunatic in Times Square who shows up every day of the year holding the "THE WORLD IS ENDING TOMORROW" sign. Dude's been there for 15 years.

I was skeptical about this MySpace thing at first. But now that I have confirmation that Beasties and Bruce will be at Bonnaroo, I'm willing to believe that NIN, Byrne, and Volta are all legit as well.

Is this from the same source that confirmed Metallica for you last year?

Metallica, Vampire Weekend and WSP. He said it was, in a different thread.
Anyone else notice an AC/DC tribute band become friends with Bonnaroo's Myspace? Think the guys on the farm turn the get-a-tribute-band-to-replace-a-rumored-band into a tradition?
I think that roo is smart enough to know that disappointing people is not good for business.
I've said it already in this thread but....I think last year proves that's not true! ;D It seems like Superfly/AC/whoever are believers in the theory that any publicity is good publicity.
Yeah, maybe we got a LITTLE carried away with the rumors last year. Maybe we got our hopes up...okay, a lot. But still, I was really surprised by the whole "big announcement" thing last year. Even if it was just us getting carried away with the rumors, they certainly knew what was going on, they absolutely knew what we were thinking and they must have known what all the hype for their "big announcement" would look like to us.
I was surprised by it last year because it did seem like it would just result in disappointment. And I still don't think it was a good idea. But after last year, I wouldn't be surprised if they added artists to the Myspace who weren't playing to create some buzz even if it risks disappointing fans of those artists.
(And that said, I think we can assume Phish and Bruce are legit...and based on that, I think Beasties probably are and at least some of the other artists. So it's not like a HUGE disappointment anyway.)
If the lineup is truly as good as rumored, we all need to send AEG a nice gift basket because I doubt Bonnaroo would be pulling out all the stops like this in a down economy if AEG hadn't moved in on their territory with Rothbury last year.

Last year the big announcement was blown way out of proportion by us. If you looked anywhere else but Inforoo... nobody expected Led Zeppelin to be there... but us Roo'sters were trying to grab whatever we could and run with it.
Picking up a headline caliber band that late in the game is a pretty big announcement. Not often do festivals add headliners after the initial announcement (though it's getting more and more common... coughPrincecough).

I dunno... I bet you when Bonnaroo was scheduling a lot of its acts this year... Rothbury was considered to be no more with the land issues.
With that being said... I bet Rothbury gets the scraps as it was unable to get a headstart on the booking. Good thing as of right now, The Dead, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and a lot of other great headline caliber bands are still out there to be picked up.
It was more of a surprised/relief when Widespread Panic wasn't on the lineup initially. Them being added as a replacement act was absolutely no surprise. In fact, if they hadn't hyped up the announcement I would venture to suggest they would have been viewed as the obvious choice by most people around here.

I see what you're saying but last year they where not spreading rumors about the "big announcement." It was people on the internet speculating on who it would be. If the myspace thing was on purpose than they are putting the rumors out there themselves. They are leading people to believe certain artists will be there. I really hope that Superfly/AC is above using deception to create a little buzz.

They weren't spreading rumors per se, but they hyped it up a lot. I wish I could remember exactly what was said. The fact that they announced the announcement at all is somewhat significant because they don't usually do that. But there was other stuff said about it too.
And yeah, I know it was just us blowing things out of proportion, but that's what I was saying in my post - they knew we had these rumors flying around and they knew that their hype about a big announcement was going to get peoples' hopes up. In my opinion, if they know exactly what they're doing, there's not much difference between that and putting the rumors out there themselves.
I also don't think they're really being deceptive now, unless we're wrong about some of the things we think we "know." With all the rumors flying around, if Phish or Bruce wasn't playing, then yeah, it wouldn't be very cool for them to add them. But I don't think that's the case. If a few of the mid-level acts they added don't play, I don't have a problem with that. Buuut that's just me.
Ok. I am actually gonna say something that will probably get me in trouble...I actually know someone at Superfly. I am TRYING to get an early list of bands (possibly Monday). I may not be able to, but if I can, I will post ENTIRE email (exceot the guys name for I do not want him to get in hot water.)

I work for AC Entertainment here in Knoxville and I don't even know the lineup yet. I've been trying. Just a volunteer for street team, but know the Business Director personally over all of Bonnaroo. He won't leak anything to me! Damnit!

It's like how Alec Baldwin is always on call to fill in as host of SNL whenever the host they've booked falls through.
