First timer in 2009. Tent camping and planning on a shade canopy. There are tons of shade canopies out there -- question is: Buy one with mesh sides or no sides? Or buy one of those screen house shelters?

I saw both. Last year we just did a regular canopy and then affixed tarps to the side. This allowed for air to flow through it, and then when the sun changed sides we could move the shad to accomodate.
I have used one the past 3 years with the mesh sides on it. The only thing is it is space limited and then drunk people tend to not see the mesh and it will burn from a cigarette or something similar. It does however keep bugs and sometimes with act to give a very small amount of shade if the sun is right. We normally take a tarp to put on the side that the sun is on and move it as the day goes on. I would like to have a bigger/shadier tent set up this year.
We'll be shelling out the $200 for one this year, and found that Sams and Costco (sp?) both sells them with 4 sides. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend, however.

why on earth would you spend that much???
Check this out - they are on sale at Academy Sports - $69 - we have two of these and they work wonderful - they are strudy and are definately ex up (maybe not the brand but are ez to put up) - Bottom right of the page
First let me say, I normally have about 5-10 other cars in my group at Roo. Last year we found this tent on EBAY and didn't go with it because we thought we wouldnt have room. When we got there we had enough room for 2 of them. But now I am in the same predicament. Check it out.

it's something we definitely want to only buy once. We got a tent-like one last year for like 60 and it just wasn't enough. The ones you linked would probably be fine, be we want to be able to use the sidewalls. The EZ's are perfect for what we need... 4 walls (important for us because we plan on having a portable power source, xmas lights, shower tent, toilet, etc), straight legs (important for our flagpole), and the bigger canopies have the cross-truss design which is crucial for standing up to high winds in a storm. EZ up went with an open design like the ones from Academy for a year or so and they failed miserably.
Plus we'll have the extra cash once we sell our Summer Camp tickets.
This word also has a underground meaning once you break it down. Let’s take “Bonn” for example and it actually turns into the word “Bone”. We all know gays use this word to describe the action of when they are fecal fisting their Cuban cabana boy at their sex bath house parties. Now let’s look at Roo, “Roo” is short for “Kangaroo”.So put the full true message together and you get“Bone a Kangaroo
I get that part - but I don't understand why he said to "don't forget the extra curricular adult items - what the hell? Are we supposed to hang dildos on the screen netting to keep people from running into them???

Wait you're not supposed to hang dildos from the canopy...no wonder my neighbors didnt talk to me lastg year.

Your neighbors must have been gay or straight females then. A chick showing off her dildos is like an open invitation for me to say hello! ;D

15x15 is probably perfect, especially with sides on it. Much bigger and you could be in trouble with space. One year my camp site wasn't even 15x15 (more like 10x10) so this canopy wouldn't have fit. All our 10x10 canopies were actually touching (this was '03 BTW.) But most years space wouldn't be such a problem.

Personally I'd go with one without the sides. You actually need the tarp or Tapestries around the sides for shade. GAH its hot at Roo!
Yeah I probably wouldn't put the sides up unless it was raining. The shade canopy I have now is a hexagon with mesh netting for the sides, which is nice to keep the bugs out, but if it rains we would be soaked.

I use one in a square shape that is 10x10 with no sides. We put tarps up on the east and west sides though so the sun is never in our eyes, and leave the perpendicular sides open for air flow. This year I actually plan on just bringing a cot and sleeping under the shade canopy. Saves money and room with a tent, and hopefully won't be as hot as a tent.

Found this one yeaterday at dicks on sale for $200....alot but i think its worth it and i will get a lot of use out of it I think. its a 10 x 10 and the wallsgo up and down so when up you actually get more that 10 x 10 coverage..
i have this exact same one. got it last year on sale for 150 at dick's sporting goods but i would pay up to double that. it's perfect for roo! -we closed down the sides to block the sun in the morning for some extra sleep time -opened it up in the afternoon -and put the canopy over our tent when it rained for some extra protection
it worked out perfectly! one tip, make sure you have help setting it up. if you get in a hurry you can screw up the sides pretty easy.
