I thought it was VIP to but we were hanging right behind them before Chris Rock last year and noticed several GA people going through. So we had to do it. There are 2 entrances. One left and one right. They said they wouldnt let you out after the show started but my friend really had to pee so they let us leave and go back in. It was really cool. They didn't make us leave after his set. We stayed through the Metallica performance (ended up leaving halfway through) so if you really wanna see someone, maybe you should try to go early because they do limit the amount of people in there.

What do you mean after they clear out the crowd? Like, you can't just sit in front of the stage all day and chill there? I plan on seeing the shows before phish come on regardless of what they are so I can keep moving up til i get close. I don't want to get cleared out and have to re-enter every time

^I've heard of security clearing people out and I've heard of them letting folks stay as well. I've also been curious about this. I know at some points during the weekend it's completely closed off until a certain show.... I thought I was almost certain there was a gated area for VIP front and center. Maybe they do allow some GA if VIP doesn't fill it up?

I hate that money gets you better seating. There should be equal opportunities. But, It is mans natural tendency to exploit something for the benefit of himself. Which is how almost every business works these days..
But I will enjoy shows from wherever I sit. Just the whole idea of money makes me mad.

I totally feel ya man, and I, too, will be enjoying my time wherever I may land. I was pretty upset when I first found out about the VIP section. But on the other side of the coin (or huge pile of stinking money), if I were paying VIP prices I would expect nothing less... That mess is kind of outrageous.
From what i understand it's a European style GA pit...they fill up the pit area and then once the show is over they flush it out and allow the next wave of people who are waiting in line into the pit..so i'm assuming that there are going to be multiple lines waiting to get in the pit because of people lining up early for the headliners and not wanting to go in for the acts before them...
waiting all day for phish is largely a pointless exercise. yes, you will meet cool people - but once it's dark, every form of wook and gatecrasher is going to show up to be "in the front". there will no longer be a line. there will just be a mass of people smooshing their way in. the only way you can guarantee a good spot is to camp behind the pit.
^idioteque, karma for the observation. You're totally right. Getting in line about an hour or so early is probably the best course of action. But of course the d-bags are going to come out of the woodwork right around showtime.
We got in the pit a few times in 07. The best method is to wait for the crowd to be let in for the set before the one you want up there for, then immediately get in line. You can watch the earlier set up front from the side (not a bad spot), then you are first in the pit for he show you really want to see. Just be sure to pee before you get in, because once you leave, your chances of reentry are slim to none.

I found that a $5-spot to the guy in charge of re-entry usually GREATLY increases your chances of coming and going as you please.
Instead of getting caught in the mass of people moooooshing to get in to the pit, just get to the front of line and hold your ground. Of course people are gonna push past you if all you do is get annoyed about it to yourself. Refuse to move, say something, or ask for a reason why they are trying to get thru at least. Most people will be reluctant to cut you if you just make them feel like a bad guy.
I must say it all depends on who you get guarding the gate. My buddies waited all day for Metallica (they are fans) and were able to get in and out of the pit the whole time leading up to the show. As for me, I am sorry, but there is no reason to miss out on all the the great shows, just to be up front, its the music i hear with my ears that I am there for.
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
VIP viewing at Bonnaroo sucks. The food sucks in VIP as well - don't think that that is a perk. The showers are nice to have. The location is really nice to have - that's the real key - it really helps you complete the Bonnaroo marathon. That being said, I'm going back to GA, VIP pricing is so outrageous just to get a close spot.

The pit entrances are by the fence at the very front. There is one on the left side and one on the right side. They did not care if you were VIP or GA last year. I was GA and got in and out no problem. Walk up to the big tvs and look for the railing. They were lining up on the wall last year.

at pearl jam last year the line for the pit was pretty much a mess. i was with a group of maybe 7 or so and we considered trying to get in line for the pit as Jack was ending his set but it was just a complete mess. anyone pushing into the line was a jerk. we settled for an awesome spot with maybe 20000-30000 people in front of us, almost straight ahead of the screen on the right side of the stage. never felt so close to so many people as i did during that show
there was this one dude who while we were making our way into the crowd grabbed onto my back back and said "youre my new best friend" i just looked at him with a permagrin im sure. his multicolored plaid shirt more than made up for him tailing on me.
Don't confuse the PHOTO pit with the GA pit.... That IS a VERY restricted smaller pit in front of the GA pit that only people with photo wristbands get to go in and take pix for (usually) the first three songs of the set then are ushered out quickly......
It's pretty standard photo clause schmuck...the smaller acts/stages/tents you can pretty much walk up and take pics anytime...at the smaller festies they don't even have barriers in front of them. But for big acts/headliners it's the first three songs or first 15 mins...it's usually just easier to do the first threes songs cause ain't NOBODY timing anything. Some acts are even more restrictive...when I shot NIN at VooDoo had to sign a seperate photo waiver from the regular festie waiver and they divided us into two groups and we only got to shoot two songs per group....Tool didn't allow ANY photos at Roo in 2007 AT ALL For the Police they took the photos in a few at a time and ran them through for like the first 30 mins of the set and let them shoot for like 5 mins each to keep the pit more clear....
Mostly it's to keep the pit clearer so that the paying audience's view doesn't get obstructed by photogs jumping up trying to get "the perfect shot" for the whole show....which makes sense. AND because the band is probably a little bit conscious of all those people trying to get "the perfect shot" of them RIGHT under their feet! LOL! ;D

The pits are pretty large as far as pits go, maybe 800 plus. I have never been ushered out of the pit, a great example is seeing Chris Rock and Metalica from the same spot in the pit. You really need to check it out, it is a BLAST!
