Karma to you dmbfan - for being one helpful sob! Seriously, I think I may have to stop at this Porky's place on our way through Manchester on Wed. night. Any word on their ribs?

Thats one of our local places, Praters..Their "restaurant", if that is what you want to call it, is on Hwy 55, east of Manchester, in the small community of Morrison. Its just about 2 miles past the Warren county line, on the left (coming from Manchester). Its really just two trailers connected, converted inside to seating.
Another good place to go, right here in Manchester, is Porkys Pit. It is off exit 111 (Same as Bushy Branch), but you go west on Hwy 55, away from roo. It is only like 1/8th of a mile off the interstate on the left. Its just a little shack, that you can drive up to the window, or they have a walk up window. No indoor seating, but there are a couple of picnic tables. Its real good, I like Porky's pulled pork better than Praters...
Since "Redneck BBQ" went out of business, Porky's Pit is the only place in Manchester to get good pulled pork.
You can stop right off I24 (exit 78) in Murfreesboro at "Corky's BBQ". It is a chain restaurant, but they have pretty good pulled pork and ribs.
there seem to always be one or two offical vebdors smoking pork in centeroo. One year i camped next to a guy who broguht his own bbq and was selling $3 pulled pork sandwiches all weekend. Its all I ate!

My sister and I took a trip from eastern SC to Kansas City and back about 3 years ago. We stopped at every BBQ place I could find, especially the small ones. She may have gotten tired of it but I never did.

Man, I hate to rub this in. Today our school had a teacher appreciation luncheon (I'm a teacher) and served us....you guessed it! BBQ!!!!
It was Prater's. It was pretty good...not great.....consistent but not overwhelming. Not too smokey, not too salty. Very juicy but not watery. Pulled.
DMBfanintennessee is right, Porky's Pit in Manchester is good. Personally I find them to be a bit skimpy on the portions, for the price. I need to feel full from a good BBQ plate or sandwich.
In my opinion, one of the best BBQ joints in the South , in my experience is "Dreamland" in Tuscaloosa Alabama and Birmingham.
If you are headiing through AL on your way to roo and have time, stop at Dreamland, do it. This palce is famous for good eats.
People sure are approaching this subject lightly. Not usually something you do in the south. There are many types of BBQ. I will always be preferential to Eastern NC style (vinegar based) when it comes to pork. Not the ketchup based. Thems fightin' words, I know. Seriously I will eat any and all BBQ (I will travel hours out of the way to try something new even the ketchup stuff) but I will always crave the "true BBQ".

Yuck, I hate that Katsup style BBQ. I can tolerate it on ribs but it is not my preferred. I prefer "dry - rub" ribs and dry rubbed pulled pork. Good BBQ must be pork othrerwise it is just.....grilled meat. I do like the Vinegar base BBQ too. That is called "Carolina" style right? "Low Country" BBQ?

When you say Bar-B-Q I think pulled pork. Ribs and such, as far as I was raised, are nor"Bar-B-Q" per se, they are "BarbecuED" but they are not "Bar-B-Q". Only pulled pork fits that around here.
I agree on the portion size at Porkys Pit, they skimp a bit on the meat, but they have three "sizes" you can order when you get a sandwich. If you get the largest, the meat will be falling off the bun!
I dunno, up here in cleveland most of the BBQ i get my hands on isn't the down-to-goodness real stuff. But I love ribs, my bf likes them even more, so we've tried most franchise ribs around. I like my BBQ saucy...i think it's mostly ketchup based up here. I don't know that I've tried the vinegar style. And if there's a hint of cinnamon, ginger or nutmeg in the sauce, I'm good to go. Gotta have a bit of that.
I don't usually make my BBQ sauce (i can understand while some would, but bleh).
Open pit is one of my favorite shelf BBQ sauces. I've tried others but usually go back to that. I'm bummed the recently stopped using glass for their sauces though.
I'm really open to anything. But when it comes to BBQ, it better have some sauce!

Lexington is known for their bbq (even if it is Western NC style - ketchup base) but they should know better than to schedule that festival on a Saturday during football season in the south. They might could double those numbers of people otherwise.

I'll pass on ketchup and vinegar based BBQ sauces... the real stuff is molasses based - sweet and smokey. Gates is about the only vinegar based sauce I enjoy. Pulled pork being the only 'real' BBQ? Wow... not where I am from - ribs are king, and pulled pork is the cheap afterthought. Then you've got your beef BBQ brisket, smoked turkey, smoked chicken, smoked ham and beans, coleslaw, etc. - all make the BBQ experience... set a plate of plain pulled pork in front of me and I'm not gonna be real excited.

I have never been to MO (I just assume it is really there) but I don't think molasses is a base. Isn't it just an ingredient? That would be some sticky over the top stuff otherwise.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!
