So, I've got my tickets for Bonnaroo and I can't wait. One problem I've been having being that I haven't listened to a lot of Phish is I have two conflicting trains of thought about what to do leading up to Bonnaroo and Phish! I've only heard three or four songs as of now and I like what I heard. Should I:
1) Listen to as much now before Bonnaroo so I can appreciate it more when I get there?
or
2) Save it and don't listen to anything else so it's a new and unexpected experience at Roo?

I've downloaded shows from www.livephish.com and have been listening to them a lot as I am somewhat new to Phish as well.
I love what I am hearing. Some of the songs are kind of bland as in "yeah whatever". But sometimes (most of the time) they get in these grooves where I'm like "Wow, this is awesome.".
The great thing about Phish is that you can get so much of their music for free due to their open recording policy.
Everything in moderation. Just mix some Phish in with your current jams and you should be fine. You don't want to get sick of them listening to them 24/7. Just familiarize yourself. Check out some of the Phish threads on here so you get an idea of what you're in for.

I only knew Story of the Ghost, Billy Breathes, Lawn Boy, Farmhouse and a little bit of Round Room/Junta.
i've been listening to as much live stuff as possible to learn the other songs. I like knowing the tunes ahead of time personally.......so you can listen for the differences and crazy parts.
I'm in the same boat as you man, what I was planning on doing was to go out and listen to thier big hits and see where that leads me. But for the most part I'm gonna hold off on them until I get to roo, so that I can experience the whole thing for the first time. I think just knowing the song people will go ape shit for when they start playing. Hope it helps man
Originally I was just aiming to become somewhat familiar with them, but once I got Junta and A Live One there was no looking back. They will be an integral part of my playlist from here on out.
So the question is : There is some great music in the world with which I am not familiar, should I listen to it as soon as possible?
Um
Yes.
Umm. no. please read the actual post to see the predicament.
You've never heard something completely new for the first time and been blown away then had the next few listens be good but not nearly as awesome? That first time can sometimes be the best, but other times it takes a few listens to really get into the music, hence the question. Not knowing what to expect and being pleasantly surprised can be fun.

I say listen to as much as you can, i really dont get the whole idea of intentionally not listening to them just so your first experience is live.
i just watched Bittersweet Motel for the first time last week, its streaming on google and theres a link to it around here somewhere. anyway, its a cool movie and there was one part i especially like where trey is talking about messing up some transitions or whatever he was saying and he is basically like, i really dont give a fuck. Its not about playing every note in every song throughout the show perfectly, its about rocking the fuck out and the energy exchange between the band and the audience.
and what DJ magic said, listen to every show they ever played and you are still gonna be surprised when you see them because thats just what they do.
I've been seeing Phish live since 1992 and Bonnaroo will mark show number 50 for me.
My suggestion is to try and see one of the concert DVDs to at least get a taste of the Phish live experience. Some of the material can be pretty challenging for a first-timer, especially with a belly full of corn (or other farm products).
Check out the Clifford Ball DVD set to experience Phish in a festival setting. It's well worth your time.
I agree that watching one of the live dvd's, or even bittersweet motel, may help you gain a better idea of the live experience, but can't emphasize enough that each show, each crowd, and each night is distinctly different. to further the discussion, and hopefully feed some thirsty ears, I'll present this, from another message board:
"Eleven years ago the popular rock band Phish set off for a 21-date fall tour that is arguably the best run they ever played. Fall `97 saw the band finally embracing their success and adding elements of whitebred funk throughout many of the strong jams that seemed to come out of nowhere each night. Nasty doesn't even begin to do it justice. Phish wasn't into giving their tours names, but Fall `97 quickly was given the "Phish Destroys America" moniker by fans, thanks to a controversial Ames Design tour poster used to advertise the tour opener. The title fits the tour perfectly, as fans were treated to many nights of Treynal Destruction.
This is a compilation of songs from Fall '97 that was made by a fan. All of the segues from song to song are flawless and all the songs are also soundboard quality. This is a must have for any Phish fan or anyone that appreciates incredible funky improvisational music!
track list to follow.... but really, give yourself the time to listen. if none of this strokes your audio g-spot...if at some point you don't find yourself smiling uncontrollably...if you have no emotional reaction to this music...you won't like Phish. Otherwise, WELCOME!
sorry, not to dwell on things, or throttle deceased equines, but I was listening to a personal favorite live tune just now and had a further thought I figured I'd share...and this is a bonnaroo board so I have a feeling more than a couple of you may relate... If you've ever sat in a field with 70,000 people who never felt like strangers, and cried whilst smiling wide because you were suddenly overwhelmed by an acute reminder of all the things that were good and hopeful in society, humanity, and the world...then this music, and this community, probably make sense to you.
a lot of people will tell you different, but Coventry - when a lot of us thought this band, and this part of our lives, was through - was one of the more positive, soul-cleansing, perspective-re-arranging experiences of my life. maybe some of that was due to certain particulars of my experience that weekend, but the fact remains that it happened because of phish. Nowhere else in life have I ever felt the way I do at a phish show. We all have our own forms of therapy, and perhaps this music is one of mine, but damn if there isn't something great about seeing so many smiles in one place at one time for one reason. sweet blog, i know. sorry for the rant.

I can't believe the number of people on these boards that don't listen to Phish! No other band will provide you with as many twists and turns throughout a live set - musically and emotionally!
I definitely recommend listening to some of their music now. It doesn't have to be just live stuff, try listening to Billy Breathes and Hoist and then compare those songs to their live versions. There are also historic shows to look for, like The Bomb Factory (google it) and the aforementioned Clifford Ball, as well as many, many more. If I had one recommendation to make it would be 12-7-97.
"You guys wanna start that jam again?" "Yeah, just the jam." "Yea, Yea, just the jam." "Ok, we're gonna start that jam again." "Ok, just the jam, just the jam. 2..3..4!"
I was searching through concerts on OnDemand this month and saw a Phish show from 1996. I've never seen them live so I decided to check it out.
Maybe it was because it was 1996 but I was not impressed. They just stood there and played, and the lights were really not that impressive. I was looking forward to them a lot more before I saw this performance.
So with that in mind, I say wait and experience it at Roo
Yeah i went and watched Bittersweet Motel and bought Billy Breates and Hoist. The only reason i am not going further is i want to be surprised and more in the moment for some songs. And also because i may have to miss a little bit of their late night set to see Animal Collective if they are late night as well.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

i watched this too. trey looked like an ogre and it was boring.
listen to the newest shows from hampton - they are phenomenal. it's 9 cd's worth of how they are playing now - and it's hard to get them out of my cd player. in fact, they have been in my car for months!

Well this is good news for me then. I assumed they would be better than what I saw.
Just wasn't the first live Phish experience for me that I thought would be.

"One problem I've been having: Being that I haven't listened to a lot of Phish {is} I have two conflicting trains of thought about what to do leading up to {Bonnaroo and} Phish!"
Dont listen to as much as you can otherwise you MAY be sick of SOME of their songs
or
weekly (8 weeks left) listen to 5 songs (studio version then live version) I think those 40 songs (80 with the live stuff) should help and wouldn't over do it.
then again one can never tire of phish am i right or am i right, huh?
I ate a verrry crunchy peanut putter sandwich this weekend, put on 4/3/98 and the itunes visualizer and it was pretty much the most ridiculous thing ever. highly recommended.
