Sorry to diverge from popular opinion but this add is a FAIL. There are so many artists across multiple genres that would have brought another degree of variety and depth to the festival, but instead they choose a dull corporate rock band that brings little to the lineup that at the very least isn't already being represented by a lot of better bands.
Actually, though, that does kind of make them a great add, because I won't have to worry about yet another Friday conflict.
White Denim - 8/13-14 Power of the Riff - 9/1-2 Bruce Springsteen - 9/19 & 9/21 Gonjasufi - 9/24 Jay Z - 10/4 Animal Collective - 10/5 Swans - 10/10 GWAR - 10/16 New Order - 10/18 Squarepusher - 11/1 Bassnectar - 11/18 Neil Young & Crazy Horse - 11/27 Bonnaroo 2013 - ???

Wow, it looks like you have pretty good taste in music. I think you should give them another shot with a more open mind. They aren't 'corporate rock', they are just great pop songwriters. If an artist is good enough to sell out, then why not?

They're not bad, I had never even heard of them before today. How did all of you guys hear about them? I might check them out if there early in the day.

I found out about them by chance, I was litening to Pandora and then one of their songs came on, since then I've kept an ear out for them and I've liked what I've heard so far.

They just played SNL a couple weeks ago plus they've been getting a lot of blog buzz.
From all accounts everybody's really loving this band and their new album is pretty damn good. There is a leak available even though the album doesn't come out until late May, but if you do download the album and like it make sure to pick up the album.
On SNL- 1901 The first single they released off the new album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
I would embed these videos but nbc/universal has that weird thing with youtube going on right now so the usual youtube button doesn't work on these and the pitchfork.tv music video.

lol, they're signed to Astral Werks and Arts & Crafts

you don't decide what is a fail just hours after an add, i'm sure you are looking for a certain 2 or 3 bands that would make you happy (as we all are) but don't spew your smutt on everyone's good time
not to mention your analysis of who they are as a band is grossly wrong, phoenix is, as said earlier, a great writer of pop songs, and some of us like straight forward new bands
P.S. i called this add a few days ago on lineup additions, yay for me!

Whenever a band is signed to a major label, (astralwerks is owned by Virgin/EMI) there will always be questions about how authentic a band is, or if they are a sell out. Yet, when it comes to Phoenix they're just a fun band, and a really talented one at that. I don't think that just because a band with a more independent music sound is signed to a major label means they are puppets to the man.
I chuckled a bit when the guy called Phoenix corporate rock. He can hold to that opinion if he likes, but I think of Phoenix more as the European answer to Spoon. There's a little more disco influence, but similar to Spoon, they've been around for a decade and are only now just getting wide recognition in the mainstream, basically because they write hook based rock that goes down easy.
Anyway, I really like this addition. Totally unexpected for me. Will make Friday even more conflict laden.
Is anyone else a bit shocked that Phoenix, a band that has played Saturday Night Live in front of thousands of viewers, will be playing a cafe stage at the Roo? I mean, not to downgrade acts like The Low Anthem, Hockey, and Pretty Lights, but Phoenix seems like a band on a much larger scale than any of those acts. I mean, heck, even a band that I really enjoy, Passion Pit, is playing a stage on Thursday night, and they haven't even released an album yet (granted it comes out in May and they're the buzz of the music world right now, but...). Just surprising to me that Phoenix wasn't fit into the Friday stage schedule rather than the cafe.

I totally agree. They have been getting really buzzed about lately, with their songs on Free Radio and Best Week Ever. It's really surprising to me too. I'm definitely gonna be there, but it's gonna be freaking packed.

I've posted something along these lines a couple of times, so I completely agree. The band is even ahead of Bon Iver on the ACL lineup, and Bon Iver has a pretty high spot on the lineup at Bonnaroo. If they don't get moved into a tent I would be very surprised and disappointed. I know they're changing the cafe a bit this year, I just don't see how it could comfortably fit all the people who will want to go to this show.
However, on the last update on the website, where they announced that Dirty Projectors, Katzenjammer, and the cafe acts were added, they showed a picture of Phoenix, so I'm starting to think they might be looking at the possibility of moving them into a tent.
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.
