Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Getting in early is important at any stage or tent. Even getting in after the show start, I can usually worm my way in from the side, and get pretty close to the stage. This doesn't apply to some shows, when most of Bonnaroo is there.
What Stage can be glorious sometimes, even in the heat. I've got a canvas canoe hat w/ a real wide brim. Feels like the top half of my body is in the shade. When less than packed, you can stroll around the field as in a busy park.
Sonic Stage is without a doubt the most intimate. I could count the whiskers on Jorma Kaukonen's face when he played there.
The heat is just part of being in Tennessee in the summer. I have no problems at all with the What stage. If you want to get in close and deal with the throngs, you can, but if you stay back a bit you can still hear very well, which is the main thing. I have issues with the Which Stage, and during the day you can bake (not in a good way) in a tent if it's crowded.
I have no problem with What Stage, the sound as everyone has said is great and even if your far away you still have the screens so you can actually see what is going on. The heat didnt really bother me last year, I was expecting way worse but I thought it was actually pretty nice last year.
I prefer the tents because its more intimate but What Stage is def. a great place to catch a show, Which Stage on the other hand I wasn't really a big fan of.
I remember last year walking around in Centeroo on Thursday night with my friends and we wandered up to the side gate of the What stage main venue area that was al closed off until friday. The grass looked like a landscaping company had just finished up lol. It was beautiful, they had the sign lit up. My friend said something along the lines of "hey Ryan you can't wait to tear that place apart tomorrow!" and I said something along the lines of "We come, rock out, and shit happens ya know...but I really can't wait to tear that beautifully groomed field to pieces." lmao...and the rest is history.
I remember walking across the main venue with a friend one time and I said to him "We're walking on holy ground now." I hope he felt the same about it, heh

i love to sit in the waaay back of the What stage...we get our blankets and treats and get all comfy. like rooconteur said, the what stage is the loudest, so we just watch the screens and chill out to the music. i spent the TOOL set looking alternately at the stage and the stars and feeling the rumble of the bass come up through the ground. it was amazing.

If the sun is out, there better be a real good band playing at the what (or which) for me to stand in it for 1, 2, maybe even 3 hours... i mean, it's almost unbearable unless you are just fucked up and don't care. Snoop will probably be on what during the day, so that will be one of my very exceptions...
The first year I went (2003) my group sat at the What stage through both Ben Harper and Jack Johnson. My entire right side was crispy. Nearly ruined my roo. So far in my 6 roos... 2003 has been the most unbearable for heat. Its direct heat, but Ive boogied a bit too hard in a tent too (most notably Mofro) and got a little overcooked as well.
I liked the Which better than What but I really don't care. I'll go where the band is playing that I want to see. I do like the What better at night though.
I think the only band I cared to see last year at the main stage was Pearl Jam, and I didn't stay for that for long. I always get the names of the stages confused, but the one MGMT and Ghostland were at last year is one of my faves cause it's easier to get to the front. I was right in front for Ghostland's late night show and it was one of the best I saw.

So what if you want pit section for 2 bands in a row... it doesn't seem fair to be kicked out of pit when you waited to get into the very front.... i'm confused on that one. i mean. in theory, if i wanted to see every band front and center on the what stage... i'd be pissed if they told me to go wait back in line again... maybe that's just me.

It's quite easy to get kicked out and then hop right back in line and get back in on the barricade. I did that with Jack Johnson/Pearl Jam, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss/Widespread Panic, Ben Harper/The Police, and The Roots/Tool. Just be prepared and know your surroundings.

In 2006 there were people who camped at the what stage area entrance waiting for it to open, then sprinted to the front of the stage to camp out all day for Radiohead. I think the new pit policy was in place the next year so people don't have to do that type of thing to be up front. Plus if you wanted to be up front for Elvis Costello or the Neville Brothers... you were going to be behind 5 rows of Radiohead fans. While I see your point, I like the policy because I could get up front for Galactic (for example) and not be blocked by people waiting for Beasties and/or Phish. I'd then be out of the way after Galactic ended so those people could still get their prime spots.
I think the What Stage is great...good sound from every vantage point, lots of space in the back field. They definitely need to do something about the horrific sound and bleed at Which, though.
which stage is great cause it's in the middle of everything. my favorite is throwing a blanket down far enough back that no one needs to tramp on it & just chilling through multiple bands. got all my equipment right there. take a little snooze. & then you can jump up & dance if you need to. plenty of room.
being out behind the tents is sorta the same. the tent roof blocks the view of the performers, but i don't mind people-watching to the tunes.
the sun isn't too much for me. just keep some sunblock handy & reapply! my fairer skinned friends learned to quick!

I was one of these people. We got to the entrance around 9AM and there were only a small handful of people there. They opened at around 11:30 or so and it was kind of scary. By the time I caught up to my friends, there was already four rows of people behind them. It was insane. I was happy they implemented the pit thing because of this.
I've actually only been to the What Stage twice since this and that was Metallica and Kanye. I don't think I have anything picked on that stage this year either.
