I'm driving down from New York (14+ hour drive) with some friends, and I was wondering if anyone knew of some interesting stops to make along the way. We wanted to take our time this year and try some cool things along the way. We'll probably take 81 all the way down to 40, and then decide whether or not to take 24 all the way to Manchester or 40 to 111S and then 55.
Suggestions would be much appreciated, and I hope this year will be as awesome as previous years!
I drive from PA to Louisiana a lot, and have pretty much memorized the main portion from PA to roo (81 south to 40 to 24). See Rock City right near Chattanooga, thats a cool place, from the top you can see like 5 or 7 different states, not sure which, but thats a lot, lol. Also, any caverns you see signs for, check them out, they're cool (in multiple ways) and fun. Natural Bridge, which is somewhere near Chattanooga is cool too. Also, the Knoxville zoo is huge and very interesting. If I can think of anymore places, I will post them. Oh yeah, and just stop at those crazy fireworks places and just browse (dont buy anything til the way back please), they have trained professionals and these cool videos that shows each kinda firework they sell and what exactly they do.
My friends and I are heading down from North Jersey and we were hoping to find one of those food eating challenges on the ride down. Like the ones you see on the travel channel's Man vs. Food. Im having trouble finding places though cause I dont want to sway too far off the track. I'll come back and post if I find anything awesome. You guys do the same!
Any people you see in West Virginia would be interesting , haha.
Really? What is so interesting about us?
Hummm WV has always been a little odd for me every time i go that way. I am sure there's many normal people, just not any ive seen at a few gas stations.

I grew up in WV, but live in SOFLA now. All of your people coming through WV, see if your route takes you through Ansted, WV. There is a place there called the Mystery Hole, and it would be right up the alley of the Roo crowd IMO.
Chattanooga has Rock City and the Aquarium. If you can go threw Lynchburg it a little town that is all about Jack Daniels with tours of the distillery and a town square with neat little shops. Tullahoma has Gearge Dickel. If you Travel East on Hwy 64 threw Memphis you can catch several little towns with neat shops and great scenic drive. several of the towns have some tourist attractions one has a muesem of Bufford Pusser the famous TN Sheriff thats neat.

There is a small house in either Tenn. or Virgina, or maybe West Virgina.... I don't really remember. BUT, there is a huge sign on the highway for Fireworks. So we took the exit. We drove up to a house. There was a big sign boasting "The Largest Rattler in the south." It turns out it was just an old guy who made his house into a store/home. He had tons of religious shirts and hats telling us, God is Good! He didn't have fireworks, just a lot of glorified sparklers and smoke bombs. BUT he did have the largest rattler I've ever seen dead and stuffed and hanging on his wall. Anywhoo, it was the strangest place I have ever been. So if you see a sign for Fireworks, take the exit.
Check out Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg TN on Hwy 50. Nice little town the tour of the distillery are free. Take Hwy 64 to hwy 50 you can grab 64 from hwy 231/431, I 65 or I 24. Hwy 50 will take you to Tullahoma then you can catch hwy 55 to Manchester.
I'm driving up from South Florida and I want to find some crazy hillbilly tourist trap (like the giant dinosaur in the Pee Wee Hermon movie).Any suggestions? These kind of place's seem to not have web sites or the best advertising so you only really find them if you see it from the road or someone tells you about it.
Years ago I went to the gator farm outside Orlando where the entrance is a giant gator it was pretty cool but I think it burnt down or closed.

I definitely MUST see this sometime soon. I saw it earlier in this thread from last year suggestions or earlier, and since I went to Virginia Tech and plan on visiting eventually, definitely have to make a stop there on the way down!
I love these kinda suggestions... unique, memorable places.
Hey Ellie! It's really surreal to see and there's an interesting story behind the dude who built it. I'm rolling solo out of Roanoke, VA! I actually work in Blacksburg across the street from the Tech campus! Maybe I'll see ya on the farm!
