Well, I live in Minnesota. Phoenix is playing the varsity theater in Minneapolis. The ticket costs $15 for general admission. I realize that you don't live in Minnesota, but Phish is usually more spendy.
I'll be happy to hear all of your "music is worth emotions not money" claims, but to be brutally honest, Phish is epic, old, and expensive. Phoenix is on the rise. The band is young, and they've been doing more and more US shows. Stick around for Phish and don't look back.
And hey, I looked up their tour dates to post this, and I think I might go now. Thanks for the idea, they make good music. Long Distance Call is catchy as bird flu. Still, if Phish were at the varsity theater for $15. . . you get the picture.
I dont get why anyone would even go this year if they dont like Phish. I fully understand that there are a ton of other bands but it is a big purchase and you could go to any number of other festivals that doesnt have Phish taking 2 of the 3 headlining spots.

Don't interpret the fact that I will be at Phoenix to mean that I don't like Phish. I will also miss the first part of Bruce to see Russian Circles. Just how I roll.
And all my best laid plans will probably go to sh!t when I get there. I am like a kid, any new shiny object will distract me.

Because they are one band out of over 100 on the lineup.
The only headliner that has ever swayed me to choose a different festival is Radiohead. I go to Bonnaroo to have a good time, not for the headliners.

There is absolutely no other band on the line up of any festival in the US this year that could get me away from a late night Phish show.
Except maybe that Raja vs Simon shindig going on at Camp Bisco... but even that would be the worst conflict in the history of conflicts and I'd be torn from limb to limb trying to be at both

That wasnt a diss to anyone at all. I said that I understand about all the other bands and the party. My point was just that its a big trip and there are a bunch of other festivals out there. If a band I didnt like was taking 2 headlining spots I would just go to another festival so I could get all the other parts of a fest as well as a headliner I digg.
Wasnt trying to be controversial. Sorry if it offended anyone.

if you are undecided, go with the legends. even if you do not like phish that much, they are a band you will be able to tell your grandkids you saw live. go see phish. go see phish.

I don't like Phish. I don't dislike them either, I'm just... indifferent. I'm even less keen on Bruce. Why am I going? Because there's at least two dozen other acts that have me very excited, and a bunch more that I'm at least somewhat interested in. The cost value is hard to beat, considering the number of acts I'm going to see for my ticket price.
And if Phish's live show is half as good as everyone says it is, I'll be more than willing to sit through the whole thing on Sunday. Last year, I went to Roo not looking forward to Widespread Panic and Metallica, but they were two of the best shows I saw all weekend. When I go to a show, there are a few major things I look for - yes, it helps if I enjoy the songs and the particular style of music, but it's not the only thing. Far more important than style (to me, at least) is the band's level of musical proficiency, improvisation, and audience interaction.
imo, youre insane to be going to this festival and skipping this late night for some band called Phoenix. again, imo.
What is it with you Phans thinking everyone has to love Phish??? Wilco are my favorite band, but if someone else isn't into them and would rather go see something else, hey cool, that's what they like
I'm not a huge Phish fan, pretty much indifferent towards them, but I'll catch them on Sunday anyway. I happen to love Phoenix's latest record and can't wait to kick off what's going to be a three hour + dance party in That Tent Friday night

I've said it all along... the only thing more annoying than the "Phans" are the "Phan haters." I mean, really... why is it suddenly so frowned upon just to state that you think it's crazy talk to miss a band - which was given two special weekend performances, one of which is the headliner closing of the festival spot - over a band which was moved from a cafe act to a tent spot. Just because somebody recognizes that one band is exponentially (if that adjective even does it justice here) more talented and capable of giving a one of a kind performance doesn't mean they can't acknowledge the talent of other performances.
If you don't like Phish, so be it... but for christ's sake let those who do love Phish boast in their glory that they can see two nights of their favorite band at one festival. I'm not hating on you for loving Wilco, so why the quack do you have to hate on others for obsessing over Phish!?

Sorry if this comes off angry or otherwise negative just tell if it does. I understand that all of the "Phans" are incredibly excited to see Phish. I am happy for y'all, and while I'm not a Phan I still understand how excited y'all are to be able to see them twice in this awesome setting. Sometimes it just seems that some Phans, usually none of the Inforooers, completely dismiss non-Phans, whether in attening Roo or just general non-Phish worship. And for those of us that are not Phans it seems sometimes that Phans can be haughty and insulting when discussing music or Roo. Just understand that not everyone likes Phish and 2 headlining slots do not make Bonnaroo.
And that may seem like a shot at candyflipped but it's not because I totally didn't see his comment as negative. I would say the same thing about my favorite band and I can totally see where he's coming from.

Going to see Phish at Fenway Park on the 31st, and hopefully this will allow me to make up my mind on whether I see Phish or Pheonix... I have never seen Phish live so it's almost impossible to understand what the experience will entail, however i hear it's out of this world unique! I think when people try to PUSH Phish on others by stating how EPIC the sets will be, it's not a very good arguement, because if you havn't seen them live, you just don't get it (so I've been told). My only hesitation with Phish is I just don't know what I am supposed to be doing when they break it down and play a single chord over and over slowly for 2 mins... When I listen to their live performances I tend to get bored... Hopefully a killer light show will compensate... Either way I am torn about who to see Friday night!
I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes. I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst thru the sky. There was a band playing in my head And I felt like getting high.

yeah im not trying to put myself above anyone by saying youre crazy for missing this show, its just i cant wrap my head around me not being at that show.
^I think it realllllly makes a difference if you've seen them before!! My buddy that is going down with me this year is a huge Phish fan, and he hasn't even bothered to look into the bands he's never heard of. His attitude is simply that he'll get to see Phish twice, and anything else he sees is just icing on the cake... This is the exact opposite of myself! I like to try to listen to all of the bands on the lineup, and try to find ones I really like, and try to hit them up! I love nothing more then finding great new music to listen to! I want to make sure I don't find out 3 years from now that I could have seen an artist but didn't because I didn't bother to take the time and give them a listen!

Phish all the way. Pheonix im sure will be a nice fun set but that late night Phish show will go down as one of the greatest in Roo history im sure so its really a no contest for me.
I am looking forward to the Sunday Phish show but will be enjoying something else during the late night set. If the Phans are lucky maybe the late night will be something amazing like Radiohead 2006 was but I personally wont be sorry if it is and I miss it. I think the comparison of Phish versus Phoenix is a little misunderstood from looking at this poll and reading the responses. It's not that most are directly choosing Phoenix over Phish it is that Phoenix is the stand out alternative if you are after a different late night experience than Phish. The choice by default.
