First year (04) we arrived about 7 AM on Thursday and sat in line for 4-5 hours watching the thermometer tick up into the upper 90's and then got in and got an awesome spot right off of tent only. Down-side (besides the wait): we had to set up camp in full-on Tennesee sun.
Every year since we've arrived 1-2 AM on Wednesday night and gotten routed to BFE (James Bond camping). It's a much longer walk about 30 minutes to an hour depending on how slow people are walking, weather, how they are routing traffic (shortcut through VIP & What Stage vs. around the expanded VIP area) but it's a nice area to camp with trees and you get to set up in the cool evening instead of the blazing sun. The trade off is worth it to me.
The past two years I've arrived late Thursday afternoon and gone the back way (not sure what the name of the road is) but the wait is under 3 hours. It's pretty much a guaranteed way to get BFE though. In 2006 we arrived mid-afternoon and waited to go in the main entrance. We got a decent spot not too far from Tent Only. This year I plan to arrive before noon on Thursday and go in the main entrance.
Last year we got in line about 12:30 and we got in to Roo at about 4:00. Staying in line that long sucked and /i was getting so antsy. If it weren't for the guys in front of us jumping out to play frisbee when the traffic stopped each time I would have gone bonkers. At least with the frisbee dudes I had something to look at nad break up the monotony of sitting in line. Not sure what pod we were in but it was Camp Hansel. It was about an 8-10 minute walk and I didn't mind it too much. It was a good spot as far as I was concerned. I don't really have any wacky camping stories but one of our neighbors was a hippie vegan who designs bombs for the government for a living, It hought it wa sweird that she was all PETA-going yet it was acceptable for her to build weapons of mass destruction....seemed like an oxymoron to me, but whatever!

and to add to the discussion... I have no idea what pod or camp we were in 07. But we somehow ended up right up front, only a couple hundred yards from the arch. We were able to sit on our car roofs and watch the Tool lightshow from our camp, which was sick. And then one afternoon one of our neighbors came by and gave us energy drinks with a stealie on it, and I was a bit afraid as to what could possibly be in such an energy drink. But that drink worked like a charm and next thing I know I was chasing laser pointers after the flaming lips until the sun rose ;D

Every year since '06, we get in line around 9:30/10 on Thursday morning, go in the main entrance, and always get a great spot within 10 minutes of Centeroo. Planning on doing it again this year
'06 we waited one hour, but the past two years it's been three or four. I've found reading a book is the best way to kill the time. Really helps take your mind off the wait

We arrive at about 7-8am Thursday every year. Usually get close (but my sister came in '04 was a couple cars behind us; we got very close - she got very back of BFE. So iot's a real crapshoot.)

I would consider the Main entrance as Exit 111 (Brushy Branch) since it has been in existence from the start. But I'm not sure if that's what everyone else means.

Both years we have gone we entered the line about noon and had a 5 to 6 hour wait before we were in the gates. The first time there was a hiccup in the traffic routing system and we ended up being lead blindly through the campgrounds until someone spotted the giant caravan and parked us in BFE. We were questioned on who told us to go that way and nobody had an answer.
The second year we did the same thing but this time got directed to our camps and ended up about a 10 minute walk to centeroo. It was a great spot, far enough out so that I could sleep really well but close enough so that it wasn't an hour trek to centeroo like in 07.

so we're toying with the idea of coming in the main entrance or the entrance via back roads. the far entrance is the only one we have ever used (coming from louisville) since that's where most southbound people are dumped. we get in the same vicinity pretty much every year, and obviously want closer.
anyone have thoughts on the main entrance vs. the back road entrance? we will probably be getting in line about 8-9 am.

in 2003 we came in Thursday during the afternoon and ended up way out around campsite 62. every other year i went we came on wednesday and ended up out in BFE. i prefer getting in there and getting settled and having a quieter cozier campsite than waiting in line forever and having a shorter walk. BFE really isn't that bad. we basically stay in Centeroo the whole time also so it's not a problem. plus you get an extra night of party if you come in Wednesday! ;D

I think I read one post where people were walking for 1/2 an hour to centeroo, can it really be that long or were they just over exaggerating? I read somewhere that there were golf carts transporting people around too when it comes to campsites, any word on that? Thanks in Advance you guys are all very knowledgeable!

some of the camps can be a 30-45 min walk to get to Centeroo - no over exaggerating there.
as for the gold carts - we saw them last year but never used them because we camped close - but I think it is $5 a ride

All depends on where you're parked. And the 1/2 hour walk time isn't a joke!
2002 - sat in line for 14 hours (there was only one entrance) got a spot in the front of bfe. 2003 - thursday night 11pm- 5 hour wait, 500 yards from main stage 2004 - thursday late night - 5 hour wait, bfe 2005 - thursday late night - 4 hour wait, 500 yards from main stage 2006 - thursday 730 am - 2 hour wait, 50 yards from centeroo 2007 - thursday 800 am - 2.5 hour wait, 200 yards from centeroo 2008 - thursday 900 am - 2.5 hour wait, 500 yards from centeroo
moral of the story.... if you're coming from the south, then try to get in line between 630-1000am!
I've come in at the same time of day, through the same entrance, the same highway, etc. every year since 2003 and I've never been farther than a 5 minute walk from Centeroo.

I always get there around 4-5 am on Wednesday (coming from the North, of course) and there's usually not a huge wait on the main road and about an hour wait to get through the clusterf*ck at the beginning and then we end up in the camping surrounded by trees (James Bond? Maybe? NOt sure!). It's not bad at all, and the walk is alright; shaded under the trees for most and using the shortcut is awesome. I like it there. It's nice.
07 arrived at 8 am, 3 hour wait, money spot in camp lando carlissian, which is like 50 yds from centeroo. I'm worried every 'roo after that i attend won't be as good because of the camp spot was so convenient

First year of 'roo - we got in right when everything opened it was a bit of a wait but not bad by anymeans. We were camped right next to the main stage (I guess it is now called the what stage.) Anywho - it was really really nice being camped there, however, leaving on that Monday - was a nightmare 12 + hours and I had to work the next day. We had a 14 + hour drive so I got home and slept for like an hour before I had to get to work. It was hellish.

'03, '05, '06. '07, '08 we were sorta in the middle. No where that was really memorable. '08 was probably the best spot though. About a 10 minute walk to the Ferris Wheel entrance.
'04.....now that is a whole different story. I was still in HS and had to go to summer school that year so we left mid-day on friday. Got to camp scrappy doo LITERALLY right against the tree line as far back as you could go. It was about a 45 minute 1 way walk. Terrible.

I was in Camp Chewbacca in '07...the last row next to West 2nd St. and fairly close to 8th Ave. (lol). It was a fantastic campsite - because we were the last row before the street our entire row had a lot of room, and it was super close to Centeroo....like probably two minutes to walk, I'd say. I don't really remember when we got there though....it was like a 17 hour road trip, by the time we got there we had lost all concept of time! I feel like we probably got there around 10 or 11 in the morning, and I think we waited in line for about 4 hours. I don't know which way we came in either....we just printed google maps directions to Manchester and eventually we ran into the line.

in 07 it was my first year, i have no idea what entrance we came into but it was off the road where the sonic is..we got there at about 3 am thursday morning and drove right into the camping grounds, maybe waited 5 minutes tops but ended up in bfe...in 08 we had to go to like exit 120 and turn around and wait in line for about 30-45 minutes until we pulled off the interstate and waited in line more for maybe another 30 minutes, this was about 8 am thursday...we still got stuck in bfe though...that's a long walk lol
