OK, don't know if this already exists, but here's a thread about vinyl.
I'm just getting into vinyl (got a turntable for Christmas) and it's kinda taking over my budget. Some of you guys are probably way ahead of me here, but maybe some of you want to jump in as well. It's not like I've dumped all my CDs or I'm not downloading anything anymore, but I definitely enjoy getting a new record.
My uncle was cool enough to give me about 100 of his old records with tons of classics in the mix. Pretty much all the classic Allmans, Led Zeppelin, etc.
So far this year I've picked up these:
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Van Halen - Van Halen Animal Collective - MPP The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love St. Vincent - Actor Van Morrison - Moondance Joni Mitchell - Blue Arcade Fire - Funeral
What about you guys? Anyone buying anything cool? Anything you just HAVE to have on vinyl?

I think there was a vinyl thread already but it was more focused on caring for vinyl records and suggestions about stuff. This could be more geared towards collections and new vinyl.
I've gotten a ton of good records from garage sales and craigslist........but what I love is getting NEW albums on Vinyl.
Recently on Vinyl i've gotten:
Ben Harper Relentless7 - White Lies for Dark Times My Morning Jacket - Celebracion de la Ciudada Natal Dead Weather - Hang you from the Heavens Wilco - Sky Blue Sky Delta Spirit - I Think I've Found It EP

My brother-in-law is a HUGE Jack White fan and brought me that Dead Weather 7" last weekend when he visited.
Almost ordered a Wilco album last week myself and was torn between SBS and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Bet your SBS sounds outstanding! That record seems like it was made for vinyl from the get-go.
Thought about placing the big Bonnaroo Vinyl order with Grizzly Bear, Passion Pit, Phoenix, Dirty Projectors, but decided I better save some funds for the trip. Will probably get some when I get back.
Totally agree that I prefer the new vinyl, though it is fun to rummage through old stuff.
^ I also got Sky Blue Sky on vinyl, and I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to it that way. Other recent vinyl purchases for me:
Al Green - Lay It Down - this album just sounds so incredible, and to parcel it out into its four sides and give it a serious listen is just an amazing way to spend an evening.
Mighty Imperials - Thunder Chicken Big Brother and the Holding Company - Live Dungen - Tio Bitar Mogwai - Mr. Beast
I am trying to order NOMO's new album Invisible Cities on vinyl, but I think my local record store is dropping the ball. Might have to try to get it online. I'll almost definitely get Tortoise's Beacons of Ancestorship on vinyl when it comes out.
One album I really want to get on vinyl but haven't found for a price I am willing to pay is Pet Sounds. Anyone have that one on vinyl?

One of the best things about buying vinyl is a lot of the artists include CD copies as well. I prefer an actual CD copy as opposed to digital download but I don't complain about the extras.
Sky Blue Sky came with the CD and I didn't have a hard copy (mine was lost a year ago or so). So I got two sky blue sky copies (vinyl and cd) for the price of one.
I love buying it. my favorite purchase has been The Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

i think my fave recent vinyl purchase is sonic youth's b sides and rarities. it has the full 25 min version of diamond sea - beautiful.
i usually try to find new vinyl that comes with a code to download the album as well. anyone have luck finding these? most recently i think i got beck's modern guilt this way...

Live MMJ's usually have a CD instead of a download. Also Dr. Dog - Fate comes with a CD copy. I think the felice brothers came with a digital download as did the new cold war kids.

I have Pet Sounds, and I also bought Smile on vinyl. Brian Wilson just sounds so much better spinning on my turntable.
Vinyl is a new love of mine. I've always bought a ton of music, but I just can't contain myself with vinyl. When I find a new album that I've wanted to buy on vinyl, I always panic and think that I might not find it again, so I buy it immediately, no matter how much I say I'm not going to spend a certain amount that day.
Albums that I'm looking for but haven't been able to find: Flaming Lips- Soft Bulletin Broken Social Scene - S/T David Bowie- Low Beirut- Lon Gisland Ep
My favorite albums that I have on vinyl: Ryan Adams- Cardinology (Red Vinyl and special artwork) Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot My Morning Jacket- At Dawn Grizzly Bear- Veckatimest
But I've bought so much more since I started buying vinyl in October it's almost sick, if it wasn't so awesome haha.

I think as soon as the download code with the vinyl becomes standard, the CD is officially done. If it's not already.
I'm like a lot of you guys. I'd pretty much stopped spending money on music until I got into vinyl. It's kinda crazy how varied prices are for vinyl, even comparing 180-gram to 180-gram.

that is a bold statement cd's arent going anywhere because of vinyl. even if vinyl sales are up 200%, that's like 1% of total music sales.
im the guy who buys vinyl more for the collectors aspect - i dont own a turntable, yet.

Maybe it'll take a while, but I can't see how the CD is going to continue since most stuff can be downloaded illegally or legally for cheaper than a CD cost. Personally, if I'm too impatient or broke to get the vinyl, I'll download and burn to CD for the car (no iPod car hook-up for me yet). In my case, the CD is going away but not the CD-R.
That said, vinyl is more expensive and not everyone has the means to play it yet. Eventually storing it going to be a monster. Maybe those are some drawbacks.
I've been collecting vinyl for a while (45s too), and spinning on my technics. Way better than CD and so much better quality. I've got many records old and new but to name my favorites:
Arcade Fire: Neon Bible Arctic Monkeys-whatever you say I am that's what I'm not, fluorescent adolescent 7", teddy picker 7" Black Flag: Wasted, Damaged Bjork: i forget the album name the Clash: Combat Rock Sonic Youth: Daydream nation, experemental jetset trash and no star Modest Mouse: we were dead before the ship even sank Beck:Modern Guilt Santigold: Santigold MIA: debut album Pixies: Bossanova AC/DC: Back in Black The Who: Quadrophenia, odds and sodds, tommy, the kids are alright Radiohead: in rainbows TV on the Radio: Dear Science Gorillaz :Demon days

what album isnt honestly? theres just something about it that i enjoy a lot more than hearing an mp3 play on my cpu, or even CDs.
my favorite part is when the first side ends because on cd that doesnt happen. vinyl feels more like two short albums in one because of that, and i get a better feel for older albums because you know the artist decided what was on side a and on side b
maybe the best example of this is floyd putting only echoes on the second side of meddle
my favorite part is when the first side ends because on cd that doesnt happen.
This is especially cool because it demands more attention from the listener. That makes it sound even better. It breaks the album up into smaller, more easily digestible parts.

I buy way too much vinyl myself.
My recent favorites have been "Crack The Skye" by Mastodon, "The Alchemist" by Witchcraft, and "Old Growth" by Dead Meadow. Those three sound like they were MADE to be pressed into wax, they sound fuckin glorious.
So instead of starting a new thread I thought I'd just ask here:
What kind of turntables do you guys have? I've been looking into buying a new one after the needle on the vintage one my dad gave me finally wore out... I've been told I would probably come out better just buying a new one as to trying to find a replacement needle ...though I doubt that is true I was just curious as to your guys' opinions on new vs. old and brands and whatnot. I've seen some pretty standard turntables for a pretty penny so I was just looking for someone to drop some knowledge
