In the next couple of months, I plan on moving, and I have like 300 or so records - mostly 12"/LP, maybe 50-60 7", a few 10" ones.
Does anyone have any good solutions for packing and transporting? I only have like, 1 or 2 milk crates, but finding new ones that also actually fit records seems like a tall task and Google/Reddit/etc hasn't been super helpful
I would buy some 13x13 boxes for the inner layer and put them inside a 14x14 if you're going to be stacking. Whatever you decide on is going to be more care than what many record plants put in. It's incredible the amount of cosmetic damage that a pallet can have on the outside but every record is in perfect condition.

yeah thats tough. i'm assuming they are on a shelf or something now? i have these wooden crates i use for display and they work for moving as well.
not sure if there is a really cheap option. i've purchased boxes from Bags Unlimited in the past and they are great:
the corrugated cardboard costs $30, but the really blast proof boxes are the Ultra Boxx plastic corrugated at $45. i have a few of these, have mostly used them when doing a haul to the record store to trade in.
otherwise just get some cheap cardboard boxes, only fill them like halfway, and tape the shit out of them. if it's just a quick one way trip it should be fine.
are you moving cities or just moving across town? if just across town the cheapest method is to just do a special trip in your own car and just toss the records in your back seat.
moving with records sucks no matter what. i have no plans to move but am still considering liquidating some of my collection just so whenever i move again it isn't as much of a pain in the ass.

Across the state, like 2 hours away. Currently they're shelved, so they absolutely have to be taken out and moved separately
For any Sonic Youth fans that slept on the initial sale, Silver Current is releasing the remaining batch (handmade, colored, etc.) of their brand new pressing of Sonic Youth's Live in Brooklyn '11 this Friday at 12:00 a.m. eastern time (midnight on Thursday night). I totally didn't know this was being released, so I am definitely jumping on this. If you want the regular pink & blue colored pressing, you can also get that possibly at your favorite local record shop.
here's a non-glamorous shot i took of my stereo/vinyl collection a few nights ago. complete with stacks of clothes, a random framed picture, closet door ajar, and candles and antihistamines on top of the speakers:
speakers: JBL 308PmkII powered monitors. i love these chunky guys so much. the problem with so many "audiophile" speakers is people don't want big speakers. well if you want bass you need a big speaker. you can of course do small woofers on your mains and get a sub and then use room correction to fix time/phase alignment. but while room correction software is amazing, there is something simple and easy about just hooking some big speakers up to a preamp and enjoying the sound that comes out, especially in a smaller cozy room like this without a bunch of reflective surfaces. plus i listen from like six feet away. the speakers are incredibly accurate for their price, and while i appreciate the accuracy i'm much more of a pleasing tonality kind of guy.
preamp: emotiva pt100. this was pretty much the only product i could find that fit my admittedly niche needs without breaking the bank. first it needed to be a preamp lol, meaning preamp outputs with volume control, which in and of itself is hard to find cheap since most people don't use powered speakers. i also wanted a remote control, and wanted the remote control to adjust trims and balance in addition to volume. phono input of course, onboard DAC, and various other analog/digital inputs for the flexibility. if i was looking for something like this today i'd probably spring for the ridiculously feature rich Wiim Pro Plus which was just recently released (would still need an external phono stage).
cd player: rega apollo. this is a hold out from my audiophile days. cool top loading design. i mostly stream spotify but i still have boxes of CDs in the attic and it's fun to occasionally dig through those and find a treasure to put on. i do think CDs sound better than spotify in sighted listening but the truth is in double blind testing i can't tell the difference. i didn't sell this when i sold all my other audiophile stuff because unfortunately it's slowly breaking. particularly at the end of CDs it'll start to cut out. eventually it'll break and i'll replace it with my bluray player which is gathering dust in the HT downstairs.
turntable: technics SL1200. the OG, bought this baby for $400 new at the start of my vinyl journey, probably like 15 years ago now? i'll probably never need to buy another turntable. cartridge is an ortofon 2M black, the single fanciest part of the whole system, again bought a long time ago. spins up fast, rock steady speed, built like a tank.
anyway this system has brought me a lot of joy. a home stereo doesn't have to be complicated and you don't have to spend thousands of dollars to get resolving sound. there is loads and loads of bullshit out there in the audiophile world, but at the same time you can get a super high quality system today for cheaper than ever. my lesson to anyone putting together a system is nothing impacts sound more than speakers and the room they are in.
Turntable Lab has a clearance sale happening with an extra 20% off. And still offer $5 media mail shipping! Sigur Ros ( ) for $35 is a deal instead of $60

I'll post details later but yesterday I went to Brooklyn Record Exchange next to Elsewhere and they have the biggest collection of dance/electronic 12" I've ever seen. Picked up five for at home

I've had to move my collection (about 500 LP's) a few times and never had any issues just using Bankers Boxes. Just don't stack them or leave them in the heat.

The only 2 I have are ones I just particularly love, Jack White Bonnaroo 2014 and Led Zeppelin BBC recordings. A concert I was at and a collection I listened to growing up
