I spend too much money on records in stores on artists I don't really care about. In the last month I bought Culture Club, Ike/Tina Turner, MC Hammer, and other albums that I doubt I will ever listen to more than once. I decided I would build a wantlist on Discogs and only buy new music or albums off that list. The list is now at 237 items and I only have 227 in my collection. I have a long way to go. Saturday will be 6 months since I bought my first album. Looks like I have at least another year to go until I'm satisfied with my accumulation of music. Other than the cost of buying the album, this has me more excited than anything else I'm doing with my free time.
I had a big problem with this when I first starting collecting. I'd toss a couple goof records in every time I went shopping because "hey, it's only $2" and then never listen to them, or just completely forget about them. The good news is when you get tired of them taking up space, there's some other idiot out there who will buy them off you/me on Craigslist. Just box em up as 20 for $30, throw in a respectable record or two that you don't like to sweeten the pot (I had a bunch of Bob Dylan that I don't care about) and you can flip them no problem.
Yea, that's key to get rid of batches of records. Gotta toss in at least a few worthy names or albums and the rest can be filler. Most of the time there's people out there looking for anything and everything. I need to get rid of a few more batches of records but this trick has worked for me in the past.

I had this issue as well, to the point where it was hard to even pick out a vinyl to listen to since there was so much junk in my collection. We didn't have any options for local vinyl purchases at the time, beyond Goodwill (and I bought a bunch of stuff from Goodwill), so most of my transgressions occurred on eBay. I did get some gems that way, but generally it was a package deal like you described above (get this one New Order album but you also have to buy a dozen 12" singles of 80s bands you've never heard of) and its like $30 and I'm like "hell yeah".
And even worse, the problem with buying on eBay is nobody grades correctly. I bought a lot of albums that I would have listened to and would have sounded great but they were totally trashed from years of abuse.
I actually just went through my collection and pulled out all the decent stuff that I know I'll never listen to, took it to the local shop and traded it in for a sweet chunk of credit, and got a bunch of vinyl I'll actually listen to. I still have a bunch of crappy records, I'm actually going through the process now of listening and grading. I don't want to pass on a bunch of records in poor condition, I have a friend that can use them in various artistic projects so he'll get all the junk. The rest I'll put in a lot and craigslist/ebay them as you described above. But it takes time to pull out all that vinyl and grade it.
I actually went through a similar process with my digital collection. Back in the day before streaming services I would grab everything I could, and ended up with a massive multiple terabyte library of FLAC files that I absolutely don't need. As I result, just picking out what I wanted to listen to was an overwhelming process. I've trimmed it down a ton, to about a quarter terabyte, and the majority of it is really great sounding recordings of great music, strong emphasis on MFSL, DCC, AF, black triangles, targets, and other early pressings, as well as newer remasters that actually sound good. Started using JRiver to organize and rip my library, and it is an incredible piece of software.
And if I ever want to listen to that 311 s/t album I deleted from my hard drive, I'll pull it up on a streaming service.
This hobby is absolutely about the music first, but I'd be lying to myself if I didn't say it was about collecting as well. I take pride in having my vinyl and digital collection properly organized and presented. Just another thing to geek out and obsess over.

also I am in the market for some (possibly modular) shelving/storage that can house records, turntable, speakers, books, etc. Maybe my TV too. If any of you have any suggestions, please, let me have them.

If you have an IKEA store nearby, check to see if they have this in stock: www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50147735/ It's a really cheap/easy solution and isn't totally hideous It's served me well for many years now for all of the above items (oriented the other way, obviously). The whole bottom row (right side, in the photo) is perfectly sized for vinyl.
If not, check out the Kallax shelving series, it replaces the popular Expedit series.
If you don't live near an IKEA, or hate the Swedes, I've got nothin.

I love Swedes, have an IKEA about an hour away, but hate white furniture

Dude does good work, these things will last forever.
I've bought several over the years, they are modular, and he can make matching bases/tops. Here is my stash using Tony's cubes. Kind of a mess right now:
Not sure if this would be the best option for putting your turntable on. Generally you want something heavy and solid, that obviously won't tip over.
You could get an audio rack. I use this one. I would put my turntable on it, but instead it sits on my desk because my headphone amp is so big it won't fit anywhere but the top shelf:

Awwww bummer. Mine is black/brown, but since the series is discontinued I guess it's sold out

The Kallax series is the exact same thing. It comes in all sorts of colors including black and dark brown. It's probably the easiest, cheap solution that will still look good and hold all of your stuff.
We definitely had an Expedit/Kallax love fest in another thread on here like a week ago haha.
Slowly started to build my record collection back up over the last few months, here's what I've picked up:
The Strokes "Is This It?" nude import cover Coil "Love's Secret Domain" Skinny Puppy "Greater Wrong Of The Right" Nettwerk Sound Samper Volume 2: Food For Thought (strange compilation with Severed Heads, Chris and Cosey, Skinny Puppy... and Sarah McLachlin among others) The Tear Garden "The Tear Garden EP" aka "Center Bullet" Yes "Fragile" Lost In The Trees "All Alone In An Empty House" Lost In The Trees "Past Life" limited ed. white vinyl signed by Ari Picker Lost In The Trees "Time Taunts Me" signed by Ari Picker Andre Previn Conducts London Symphony Orchestra "Ravel: Bolero"
After having such a great experience with that order and seeing their great selection and reasonable prices, I'll be returning there to get vinyl, especially if it's older and/or out of print. Anyone had any negative experiences with sellers from that site?
I use Discogs regularly and have only ever had one bad experience. I bought a record from a seller and it never showed up. When I contacted him about it he only offered me a half refund. When I bounced the dispute up to PayPal they only offered half refund as well.
ALWAYS get certified media mail with a tracking number. I learned that one the hard way. Otherwise, I've had nothing but awesome experiences.
Did anyone here get LCD Soundsystem's The Long Goodbye? If so, how is the quality, etc? I found one here in town and am trying to talk myself into pulling the trigger.

Good week for vinyl for me. I got my import of Savages I Am Here EP (~20 including shipping) last Wednesday. Friday night, up in Portland, I went into Strange Maine, a hell of a little hole in the wall, where I got There Goes Rhymin' Simon, Wavelength and Aladdin Sane for a combined $21, and today, my translucent blue copy of the new Spoon record came.

It's awesome.
I agree, it is fantastic. The way the songs are divided up on the sides is a little odd, but I get why they did it with the two turntable approach in mind.

Ohhhhh ok that makes sense. I couldn't figure out why they split the sides like that.
Does anyone have the audio download of the show they could share? My download code didn't work and Sony never emailed me back to fix the issue.
Someone else please pre-order the fancy limited version of the Goat record because I can't justify it at the moment: www.hotstuff.se/goat/x-4217
Thank you.
I tried to last night when I got the e-mail and capital one locked my credit card because it hit their fraud radar from some reason. sucks that they charge an additional 5% for using paypal.

We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Yea, I need to pre-order that. I enjoyed their stuff at NFF. Look forward to the album versions.
Order it before next Tuesday, if you can. They are giving away tickets to Solid Sound, Tweedy shows, autographed merch etc weekly on Tuesdays to those who have preordered.
