Now that it is summer time, I am outside a great deal. I have either biked or walked for exercise for many years now, but it never ceases to amaze me how many people feel compelled to honk at me.
I may not even be on their side of the road, in any way an obstacle to their final destination, but they must honk.
On my bike it is even worse. I am on THEIR side of the road. I have been cussed out, run off the road, and had things thrown at me. My favorite was a FULL glass beer bottle, that managed to go through my bike frame as I was moving in one direction and their car the other. Not a bad hat trick! And as Strum would say, what a waste of beer.
So I am curious for everyone's opinion. Why do they do this?
I frickin hate car horns for any reason other than diverting an imminent accident. I especially get riled up by the lazy buttholes who pull into a driveway and immediately honk the horn.
"I think we should only get 3 honks a month on the car horn, because people honk the car horn too much. 3 honks, that's the limit. And then someone cuts you off, ffffft, you press your horn, nothing happens. You're like, "shit! I wish I wouldn't have seen Ricky on the sidewalk!" -- Mitch Hedberg

and crunchy for the Mitch!!!!!! Biking is just getting somewhat big around here... there are asshats who run people on bikes off the road every day around this joint.... I hate it.... I try to explain to folks that bikes/runners have just as much right to be on the road as motorists do.... they don't get it... .Hell even let tractors cross a bridge and not make them yeild to me as most folks do.... be respectful!!!!!!!

I've never heard of people honking at bikers or joggers, other than in my college town guys used to honk at all the girls who ran in what appeared to be their underwear or the equivalent. So maybe you're just that drop dead gorgeous, Druid! ;D
The important question regarding the beer is... what kind of beer was it? Perhaps they just thought you looked like you needed one more so than them, and they underestimated their strength and speed in tossing it to you.

I don't know what it's like where you live, but here on Long Island we have the bicycle freaks who dress in spandex shorts and reflective tops with their streamlined space helmets. These Schwinn humping pieces of sh*t will ride in groups of as many as 30 fucking people and block the entire road on main roads in the morning when I am trying to get to work. I always honk. And I scream. "Get your fucking toys out of the road! Did your mother teach you keep your toys in the yard goddammit! Self important pieces of puke blocking the whole fucking highway. Take it to the fucking park for christ's sake!" It takes all the willpower I have not to run them down. Some days I almost feel willing to sacrifice my freedom for the betterment of all drivers. After all, it only takes one enraged motorist to mow down two dozen of these assholes at a clip before they pass laws keeping them out of traffic. There is also the natural selection argument. Obviously if you're riding in the middle of the fucking road you have substandard DNA and should be removed from the murky gene swamp.
Solo cyclists I don't mind and do not honk at them. Joggers I just sneak up behind and try to pull the sneaker off of their heal with my right front tire. This is most effective when they have their iPod up so loud that they can't hear my truck approach. ;D

manic, your post reminds me of a louis ck joke about turning the wheel just a bit and going from normal person driving to psychopath running over peds on the sidewalk ;D

I wear this ;D

I don't have a Schwinn. She is a ROAD bike though. Meant for the ROAD. Not the sidewalk, or the park, or the back yard. And there are only 2 of us.

I ride on the side of the road.
This is good info though. I have always wondered what was going through the head of one of these bungholes that tried to kill me. Now I know!
I have to confess. I completely abused my horn privileges last night. After leaving a bar/pizza place around 11 p.m., there were several college students standing in the middle of the parking garage I had utilized. It was obvious they had been imbibing. As I drove my bf to his car, I honked and scared the shit out of them. Then on my way back down, just a few moments later, I did it again. It felt so good.

Here where I live. You can’t ride your bike on the sidewalk or a citation's coming your way, forcing the bikers to be on the road. I personally feel bikers should not be on the road unless it's just crossing. Personally in the city they just cause narrower lanes making it easier for an accident. Out in the country though, that is different.
But i have never honked at people i pass. just try to go around them or go real slow and give them a dirty look........just my .02

In Philly there are bike lanes too and I never have a problem sharing the road with bikers. Bikers have just as much right to use the road as cars, that's way there are "Share the road" signs put up. The one thing that ticks me off is when bikers only follow select traffic laws, like bikers who think the traffic lights and stop signs don't apply to them. Bikers and cars share the road and should follow the same rules.

if its a bike lane then your not really sharing the road...its not like you can drive your car in the bike lane

There are different lanes for each, not different roads, that's why it's sharing the road.

It would be a lot harder to get around them if they were in thirty cars. That would block the entire road.

Thank you.

I agree. We should follow the rules. But FTR, our bikes are not heavy enough to set off the sensors so the lights will turn. I wait, then if nothing is coming, run the light. I have to, or I will be sitting there all day waiting for a car.

In all seriousness, I only get upset with the herds of bikes that I described above. They need to use the road, but they have no business blocking the entire road - especially during morning rush hour. They are still riding a fuckin' toy.
I would feel a lot better about sharing the roads with cyclists if they'd follow the damn rules.
To spare the rant, let's just say I've lived in a cycle-friendly town for a decade. I have yet to see a single cyclist stopped for a violation, yet I've seen scores if not hundreds over the decade I've been here.
So I have no sympathy when I hear you people complain about motorists.
A motorist honked at me in a crosswalk today. In front of a store, for cryin' out loud. Seriously. And one time, while on my bike, a motorist mistook my hand signal for a left turn as a motion to go ahead. I live on a fairly busy street and I hear car horns at least 5-6 times a day.
People take themselves way too seriously when they are behind the wheel of a car.
I'm not a fan of the honkers, either. I only honk if/when a potential accident needs to be averted. Outside of those situations, I'm all about the finger.
As far as my vote in the poll, I was actually none of the above.
