I really dont want to start a debate and I probably shold keep my mouth shut but....all those things that are happy and fluffy and full of joy "just happen" as do all the natural disasters, people born with deformaties, the innocent people that died at Virginia Tech, and the innocent people that are taken away from the ones that care about them so much. You cant concentrate on one side without the other.

I respect what you said and I'm not trying to argue, but I don't totally agree with that. Humans did not invent in any way the happy fluffy things like butterflies and flowers and mountains and the miracle of life. But I believe we did cause environmental disasters, human deformities, and massacres, by polluting the air and sea and ourselves. We're not taking care of ourselves, physically or emotionally, so our offspring are screwed up before they're born. We're obviously not taking care of the earth and the earth is fighting back. We are the cause of our own destruction.

You said it. Karma for your logic.
Karma back at cha for understanding.

The beauty of the world is my opinion is my opinion and you dont have to agree with it nor do I really care if you do. I never said humans invented anything, but I do know alot of mothers that take perfectly good care of their bodies while the child is in womb (emotionally and physically) and end up with deformed babies or even worse stillborn babies. Im not even sure what religion you are but since we are in an atheist's thread I shall assume you believe the world to be a creation of God or one of "intelligent design" (which in my opinion is obviously unintelligent in every way. ) right? If we arent responsible for the good then we arent responsible for the bad either
How about for us apatheists? I don't care whether there is a god (or gods) or not or where everything came from. Those issues just make zero difference to my appreciation for creatures, experiences, and wonders. I'm not denying anything, just basically find such issues irrelevant to my own interactions, ethics, politics, and experiences.
So how about we apatheists have our congregation by shaking our tails out in Centeroo? Pick a time, head to Centeroo, start dancing, and others will start joining in without a care as to why you dance, where your dance came from, or whose great plan your dance might serve.
But I've heard voices not in the head Out in the air they called ahead Through ripped out speakers Through thick and thin They found a shelter Under my skin -Evgeny Aleksandrovitch Nikolaev

I understand what you're saying, but I was speaking of humankind as a whole. Obviously there are wonderful parents out there that don't deserve deformed/diseased babies and stillborns. But as a whole population, I think the problem is we're not taking care of ourselves and our environment. "Good" people are contributing to global warming, ozone depletion, what-have-you. "Good" people are drinking polluted water, breathing polluted air, eating contaminated food, and over-medicated, and the problems we have just keep building generation after generation. I think responsibility is a huge part of the problem. Just give me a pill, so I can disguise my problems instead of trying to actually eliminate them. Just suck out my fat, pump my face full of chemicals, so I don't have to exercise or eat well and I can still pretend to be young and beautiful. As a whole, no one wants any responsibility. People just say fvck it, life's short, I'm gonna do what I want. But the following generations are the ones that suffer most for it.
Yes, I believe something created us and our natural world, just as we've created all of our tools, houses, conveniences, etc from the natural resources we have available to us. That makes more sense to me than everything materializing from out of nowhere.
Anyway, I shouldn't have gotten into this debate. It makes me too sad, when I should be thinking about leaving in 2 days for ROO! ;D
why should any of us debate anothers belief? it's all personal preference, right. what it dwindles down to each of us are seperate people with seperate opinions and truths. different experiences will lead to different conclusions. I don't expect anyone to hold the same ideals on life as me, nor do I respect anyone who tries to show someone the correct path - or the most logical one. I'm not a christian, but I believe in a higher being. that's just me, though. for those who don't believe in something bigger than yourself, that's just peachy. it doesn't affect my life in the least bit, so why should I try and argue the point with you? no one person has any more insight on religion than the next. it's all about where you head and heart lead you. live and let live, as much of a cliche as that may be. it seems a little trivial to me that we're argueing over the correct path to take religiously, this is a battle that no one will win. to me, this thread reminds me of those christians with their signs everyone keeps referring to. what's the difference? sure, different methods, but it's the same concept to me. that's the same as argueing which band is better. I've said it before and I'll say it again, different strokes for different folks. why is it so hard to just leave it at that? everytime religion pops up I keep seeing people saying "keep religion out of bonnaroo." what right do you have to tell someone else how to experience bonnaroo? I say keep atheists out of bonnaroo!!!!! naa, only kidding. but for real, chill out with the lack of respect for peoples decisions. you have no insight to their life anymore than they do to yours, so please try and leave it at that. I mean no disrespect towards any of you and my opinion really isn't any more valid than yours, but I had to get my two cents in.

There are certianly outlets in the world for religious debate and they are importiant. That being said, on an internet forum is NOT the outlet to have that debate. A Muslim that talks to god, a Christian that talks to god, and and an atheist that thinks they are all talking to themselves are not going to come to a general consensus by typing skewd remarks back and forth at each other on the internet.
I blame all the dissent on the dehumanization of trying to discuss things without actual human interaction. Trying to get your entire philisopical view on religion into a tiny paragraph on a message board causes harsh words and general discourse.

So people...please....stop....the typing
Si, stop the typing.. This thread didn't really work out as planned, but we did have some logical discussion.. Anyways, let's get this mothercorncatf*cking party started here in about 4 days! Whatdaya say?!
I am not going to read all this crap, but in defense of atheists, I want everyone to understand that we tend to believe that we never made a choice to be non-believers. Many atheists might be "de-converts," but most of the ones I know, including myself, never chose to not believe in God. It just doesn't make sense to us and there's nothing we can do about it. And even if we wanted to follow a religion, how would we pick which one to follow? All religions have this in common: there is absolutely no evidence of their validity. That's what "faith" means, right? We just never got brainwashed to have faith. I say this with all due respect to theists.
