From the sound of things, neither Jay's new show or Conan's Tonight Show has been doing as well as NBC expected. Not sure exactly how this will play out, but it seems as if Leno is going to get all Brett Favre about the Tonight Show gig.
We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

Oh come on. I know NBC owes a lot of Leno and his legacy, but the man's time has passed. Conan deserves to keep his spot; he's funnier and more relevant.

This suprises me about Conan's ratings. I used to watch Letterman more than Leno, even though The Late Show isn't what it used to be... but I think Conan's Tonight Show is much more fun than Leno's. I love Jimmy Fallon's show, too. Most Americans don't have the same taste in entertainment as me, so I guess that's just how it goes.
I grew up worshipping Rock and Roll like a religion. I know its shortcomings and strengths but have loved it unconditionally all the same since I was eight-years old. I ran away and joined the circus and honestly, I'm still as obsessed as I was as a boy. I'm not a kid anymore but I still remember how it felt and it doesn't really feel all that different to me now.
Leno probably has more approval among older demographics who are more likely to be watching TV then as opposed to the Late Night time slot. I can see why those types might not have taken to Conan like NBC would have expected.
I know with my second-shift job, I'm barely in time for Late Night... and I'm meh on Fallon so I don't make a point to watch that either.
Now, if Conan were back on Late Night un-retiring the Masturbating Bear...

The fact that they had a man running around in a bear suit simulating masturbation is wild as hell, on public TV that is. I bet Conan could pull it off just one more time. I dunno though, they should really let Fallon do it!

I believe the reason the MB isn't allowed on the Tonight Show is because of NBC standards & practices. They probably deemed it too early for him to be appropriate - hence his running off with Carrie Fischer during Conan's last week of Late Night. He could be back, but not as early as the Tonight Show time slot.
One of the rumors seems to be that Fox would be interested in giving Conan a late night show, but I just can't see that happening. Not Conan on Fox in and of itself... just that I don't see that one time slot being big enough for Leno, Letterman AND Conan.
Random thought: has anyone been pegged to succeed Letterman yet? I can't really see Craig Ferguson taking over there.
Gotta love that bear. I couldn't help but give him some work as my fantasy football team's mascot, but he was only able to root dogg sQuad as far as third place.
Another potential benefit of Conan leaving Burbank, CA: proximity to and availability of Abe Vigoda.
i think they all are good and different. they all seem to have fans. i think conan appeals to us because he seems to be a true music fan. he has the most ROO type acts on his show IMHO. i wish they could find a way for them all to have an audience and time slot. i heard that fox tv station is looking at conan. maybe that would work?
Fuuuuuck... I thought this whole move was to help weed out Leno after his unnecessarily long stint on the Tonight Show.
If this does what is rumored, being bump Leno to 11:30 for 30 minutes, then have Conan for an hour or maybe more (still giving Conan "Tonigh Show" title), then that really sucks. Maybe Leno's bad (relatively) ratings are due to the fact that NO ONE GIVES TWO SHITS ANYMORE, and not some other fabricated reason they may believe.

I hope they fire him, and he goes to ABC. Conan then Kimmel would be hilarious. I can't take credit for this, but I thought this was hilarious and a good idea if he wants to go somewhere else. Bill Simmons wrote "If I were Conan O'Brien, I would have the Masturbating Bear as my only guest for an hour every night until NBC fired me."
People of Earth: In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.
Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.
But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.
Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.
So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.
There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.
Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.
If he can't force to keep his 1135 spot, i think conan should leave.
I also think ABC would be crazy to not at least consider a Conan into Kimmel 2 hour block to run against CBS and NBC, who could suddenly find themselves third in ratings during latenight.

What would they do with Nightline? Plus, isn't ABC in some kind of arrangement with Disney? Would Conan really prefer doing a show with their standards & practices people as opposed to, say, Fox?
I know that, as of about five years ago (I learned this researching a class presentation) and possibly still today, Fox employed exactly one standards & practices person for the whole network.
And yeah, that Conan statement is simply gangbusters. Love it.
They have been trying to move Nightline for a while until it recently picked up steam. But agreed Fox could work with his humor as well. They do have The Simpsons, which Coco used to write for.

Fox would definitely allow the masturbating bear on during Conan's present time slot... they are the network that brought us Married With Children, after all.
Not to mention, Rupert Murdoch's got money coming out the wazoo. I'm sure he can make Conan an offer to rival the terms his NBC contract, even if it's a losing proposition. There's plenty of "screw you, NBC" value to be had there aside from just the O'Brien allure... If Leno resumes hosting Tonight without Conan waiting in the wings, who would be the heir apparent? I'm not sure if there's anyone else ready and able to inherit the Tonight Show in a year or two. It already seems like NBC didn't want Jay to hang around too much longer anyhow...
How can Leno not bow out of his show and let Conan keep the Tonight Show after a statement like that? Oh wait, I forgot that Leno can't leave TV cause he loves the sound of his own voice too much. F Leno and F NBC. Yo go CoCo.

Watching Conan right now. I love how his anger over this has made him even funnier. Letterman is funnier with this material too. Probably because Leno screwed him over too and Dave seems to have a good relationship with Conan. I loved Dave's Leno impersonation last night.
Leno-still not funny. To be fair, I've never found him funny.

This.
I thought Conan's statement was pretty damn classy.
Also, I'm going to begin more of my letters with "People of Earth:"
Just read that Jimmy Kimmel did his entire show as Leno, fake chin, gray hair and horrible Leno-esque jokes. I really wish I would have watched his show now.
