soldiers are clues- there is no double meaning there that I can tell, though I have found in the past, one's subconscious can do funny things - and is much more likely to let things slip.
The Who "Tommy" the Dad was believed to be dead, I think in a plane crash while in the military, came back years later while Tommy was a young man in an argument Killed the man his wife remarried to. Tommy was told never to speak about this to anyone. He pushes it all down in and goes into a catatonic state while have subconscious reactions or dreams. Daltry was also in a TV show and Movie called Buddy....
There's another Buddy that hasn't been thought of yet, Mr. Buddy Guy. He's touring and has dates open around the time.
Buddy Guy was at the farm a few years ago. Played a hell of a show and was joined by Bonnie Raitt.
Easily one of my favorite 'Roo moments. I came in only reading and listening to records from the guy. I figured, with his age, that he'd be sitting in a chair jamming out like BB King does.
Nope, he was full of energy, leaving the stage and having the time of his life. I can only hope that if I get that old, I have that same young heart as he does.
And wow, you're like a walking, talking infomercial to turn people away from Pearl Jam and Ohio State, aren't you? Before you started posting here I quite liked Pearl Jam and was indifferent towards OSU, now I find myself wishing that Eddie Vedder falls down a mine shaft or that Columbus is infested with locusts

I keep coming back to the botanical meaning of "buddy" too. We use the word "jolly" most at Christmas and I think for most of us it has definite Christmas connotations, so "buddy when jolly" could mean "buddy at Christmastime." And if you think in plant terms...what plants are budding that time of year? The plants we associate with Christmas (apart from evergreen trees) are holly, mistletoe, and poinsettias...but I'm no botanical expert, I don't know if it's even remotely reasonable to say any of those are "buddy" in the winter. But can anyone get anywhere from any Christmasy plant?
(And no, I don't think the Hollies are the answer Same goes for Badfinger, and if anyone actually gets the connection there I'll be impressed!)

I went to an OCMS concert with the Felice Brothers in '09. They were signing and we asked them if they were comming to 'Roo and they said "No maybe next year ('10)"

There's the song Holly Jolly Christmas, which fits right in with Buddy (Holly) Jolly. I don't know how to connect Holly to a band though. It was sung by Burl Ives, if that makes any difference.

Right on, remeard. That walk through the crowd was great. I didn't give a damn about Buddy Guy until seeing that set.

I also keep thinking along the lines that Buddy Holly, when he's jolly, would be a happy holly. Or Buddy Guy would be a jovial guy, Buddy Rich a cheerful rich, etc. etc. Can anyone think of something formed by a synonym for jolly and the last name of some Buddy? (oh god I made a pun) I couldn't come up with anything that actually made any sense.

Here's a wild shot in the dark: Bob Dylan.
lots of mention of Christmas and Buddy Holly as per clue, obviously. According to my in-depth internet research machine (google) Dylan met Holly 2 days before he died (in a PLANE crash) - he spoke of idolizing him. Then Dylan released a Christmas Album?

... Yeah, yeah... I know it's a stretch
The Bonnaroo tweets yesterday had a dylan reference.... no one took them seriously though...
