It is hard to define who is and isn't a Jam Band I would say the jamband fans also enjoyed.
Bela Fleck Booker T Tony Rice Toubab Krewe Grace Potter Moonalice David Grisman etc.....
Like I said though it is hard to define what is and is not a Jam Band.
Sure, that's why I was saying there would be stuff for jam band fans to enjoy. But Bela wasn't with the Flecktones, and the stuff he did was more African music than jammy type stuff -- it was great of course. Tony Rice and Grisman are straight up bluegrass. Grace Potter is great, but I didn't know anyone considered that jamband music. Booker T too. Toubab I could see.
Booker T, to me sounds a lot like MMW, I don't see why one is a jamband and one isn't. Same with say Yonder, and Tony Rice, like I said I guess it just all depends on what any one person tends to think of a as a jam band. My personal definition takes a lot of bands, from the Dead to modern stuff into account. Also all the bands I mentioned are regularly played on jam on on Sirius.

At least this debate isn't as bad as the pop music debate. 5 years ago, all I listened to were jam bands. Now I listen to everything. Friday night I went to see three local bands, a female leading a piano pop band who were amazing, an opener and headliner who played covers from Stevie Wonder to UM to....... Maybe a little Roo is just what the OP needs to widen his horizon of musical tastes.
A Thieve's Parade 2/24 Conspirator 2/26 Kevin Smith 3/11 Keller 3/17 Papadosio 3/18 JJ Grey 3/25 Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer 3/26 Toubab Krewe 3/27 O'Death 4/11 Budos Band 4/22 EOTO 4/28 Summer Camp 5/6-29 All Good
Jam bands are so diverse now... I would say that the label "jam band" only applies to the music itself in that it is live-music oriented instead of album oriented. The songs are long, the sets are long, and there's typically a lot of jamming, improvising, and soloing, and the bands usually play the songs differently every time or at least change up the sets every time. I think that this genuinely is a more optimized format for live shows because, for example, I can go to a four night run of Umphrey's and they'll never repeat a song, and they can give each night a different feel and pace, and they can show off a few different sick solos each night, and they'll play an acoustic set, and they'll play a funky set, and they'll play an electronic-y set, etc. But there are some "jam bands" that have none of these characteristics so the single biggest factor is probably simply whether the band has decided to align itself with the "jam scene" of established jam bands, venues, and festivals, and whether the scene has accepted the band.
The music is definitely THE DRAW of Bonnaroo, the only reason I would choose it over other more manageable festivals. I definitely would like to see the huge acts that you guys get out there. Some jam fans are "scenesters" who just want to wear hemp, do psychedelic drukqs, and be vegetarian with eachother, but the musicianship and technicality of good jam bands also attracts a lot of people who just really like music.
I'm in that latter category. As long as the music is good, I'm going to be happy.

I think your definition of jamband is pretty much the same as mine, tuna. Don't worry, even if you don't see a ton of those kinds of bands on the lineup, you'll find plenty to love at Roo. Great live music is what Roo does.

hey tuna just wanted to let u know something about summercamp that may change your mind...you have to pay extra to get into the late night sets, such as bassnectar etc. and the late nights can sell out because the shows are in a barn and it has a limited capacity. ive never been to summer camp but im debating on hitting it up this year, paying for the late nights is the only thing holding me back really. wakarusa is another one ive never been to i was thinking about doing waka into roo...i just wish lineups would come out to every festival the same date lol i could make my mind up so much faster!! been to roo the last 3 years tho, and it's always heady as f*ck any stage you go to something good will be playing, and sometimes you get your mind blown, and the vibes are all great i dont have a single bad thing to say about bonnaroo it is a great place and all like mind people should get in on the fun, ill be back to roo for sure this year making it my 4th, glad my 5th will be the 10 year anniversary!!

This is a drawback to Summercamp. You sometimes have to get in line rather early in the morn' and wait for quite some time to get tickets. . .

Yeah I'm familiar. Its one of the reasons I'm doing some research now, because it would basically force me to buy summercamp tickets farther in advance than I would for other festivals... wait, does Bonnaroo sell out?
But yes, I have investigated and am familiar with that situation. For whatever reason they are not allowed to play amplified music outdoors past midnight, which is why the late nights have to be in the indoor venue and why there is limited capacity for the latenight. Last year they started having acoustic latenight shows outdoors, which should minimize the problem for some people. Not for me, I sure as hell would want to be indoors for the good late night. Latenight was by far my favorite part of Rothbury and I'm sure other festivals operate the same way.
It's funny, because I've gone to Bonnaroo since '05 with a bunch of friends, and Rothbury both years essentially solo. My 'Roo buddies always ask me about Roth, and I've always described it simply as "Bonnaroo in the Forest". It really is a similar vibe at Roth-- although actually I think Rothbury had a slightly better overall crowd, just because of its smaller stature was less likely to draw to types of people who are somewhat predatory toward the open spirit and community of a Bonnaroo.
I will miss Rothbury terribly this year, and were it not for my long-time emotional attachment to Bonnaroo I would easily rate Rothbury as my top festival the past two years. That being said, none of the other fests I've been to compare to either, so if you can only do one festival this summer, make it 'Roo!

I don't think Rothbury can be compared to Bonnaroo. They are 2 very different things at this point. It seems like Roth is more like Roo's first couple years.
