Each year, people look forward to going to Bonnaroo. They WANT to spend $400-$500+ to have a great time. They look forward to it all year round. But, when a dud of a lineup is released like the dud that was released yesterday, these people can't pay $400-$500+.
Imagine, if you will, that you are an 10 year old gentile child. It's December 24th. You've been waiting all year for the following morning. You wait impatiently in bed all nite, and finally it's 9 A.M. and you rush downstairs! There are your parents waiting for you. They've got presents! You open the first. It's empty. "Very funny," you say. You open the second. It's empty. And the third. THEY'RE ALL EMPTY. You are empty. There is no Christmas.
That's how a lot of people feel, here.
i didn't make it that far in to this post because i started laughing at the "10 year old gentile child...." hahah
Its all subjective....I prefer this lineup to last years by a looooooong mile.
Whether you like the headliners this year more or not, we have ACL's #2 and #3 acts, one of which was Lolla's #6 and the other of which will be touring in a city near you every year until he dies. Nothing impressive or surprising about those gets, whether you like them or not.
this is depressing. extremely. don't think bonnaroo doesn't know this though. i'm just really happy for everyone who isn't concerned about the acts playing the festival as much as they are having more arm room at the shows.

Haha, great analogy. It wasn't THAT bad for me, but it wasn't good.
For me, it was more like a game of drunken bingo you hope so desperately to win so you can get that $150 payoff at the end, and the feeling of knowing someone else got the last laugh when all was said and done.
Every fourth or so band released I was like, "hmmm I could check them out." At least worth a dab on my bingo card, so to speak. But after so many had been released, I started to realize that somebody was going to call "bingo" pretty soon, meaning the lineup spots were being filled too quickly for my wish list bands to make the cut.
Sure enough, the last announced was Stevie Wonder, which felt a lot like someone else winning my $150. If they had called, oh, Simon & Garfunkel last, I would have felt like a winner.
Mojo - Michael Franti = socks and underwear? Made of bamboo and real comfortable then!
omitsbonnaroo - I see faults with bonnaroo but the line-up isn't one of them. Sure, I want either of the Pauls. And some J.J. Grey would be cool too but I will dance to what I have and be happy about it.
Instead of dirt and poison, we have rather chosen to fill our hives with honey and wax; thus furnishing mankind with the two noblest of things, which are sweetness and light.
It should also be noted, a lot of people vocally bitching already bought tickets, so they sort of have a right to Ann Coulter about the lineup if they don't like it.
well if you were going to a festival based on the lineup, whjy would you buy tickets before you knew the lineup? seems like a little common sense goes a long way
Some of these people, including myself, bought presale tickets for 3 reasons (or a mix of these and others):
1. We love the atmosphere and all that Bonnaroo is and figured it'd be worth marking on the calendar early. They've not let us down before, so why this year?
2. We wanted to save money because we are poor, but still wanted to be able to hit our regular festival.
3. We had faith in all that AC/Superfly was putting out about how amazing this year was going to be (again, we've not been let down before, so why believe they'd start this year?)
Again, not saying I hate the entire lineup because I don't. I'll have fun this year as much as anyone.
But I still think we've been let down from what we were promised, essentially.
This makes me think of the Phish documentary "Bittersweet Motel" where Todd Phillips is reading bad reviews and the one from Entertainment Weekly basically says Phish can urinate in the ears of their listeners and they, in turn, will be there to lap it up and record it. Ive been doing this fest since 03 and this is an insanely lackluster lineup. I dont necessarily buy the Elton John story, but Ive gotta believe something like that happened. A. Capps and DjjD were both talking up this years lineup like it was going to blow every other fest out of the water. Not to mention, they were just named the best music festival in the U.S. for the past 10 years and yet they have a festival with headliners recycled from other fests primarily. Thats the opposite of a cutting edge, precedent setting festival. The whole "But guys its Bonnaroo! It will still be fun!" response is a cop out. Just because you love something doesnt mean you should let it get away with being mediocre. You wouldnt let a person you love not realize their potential would you? The folks at Roo read this board so feedback to the lineup is a good thing. Especially negative when its warranted. Them coming here and reading us fluffing up a sub par lineup won't kick them in the butt thats for sure. This is coming from someone who LOVES Stevie Wonder & Jay-Z, digs DMB, and doesnt hate KOL. Theres really nobody on the lineup who I think is a bad act, theres just nothing amazing... nothing that wows me the way A. Capps and DjjD said it would. Thats why Im let down, personally. Will I still go this year? Sure, I already took off for vacation as did my gf, but that doesnt mean I cant be honest about the fact that this lineup is nothing special. I still love Bonnaroo. Ive still had some of the best times of my life on that farm. Im just not impressed by the lineup at all.

I've always felt that Bonnaroo's reputation as the best festival stems from not only the music, but from the overall atmosphere and vibe. I'd much rather hang out for 4 days with a bunch of hippies than the poser hipsters at Coachella or the yuppies and frat boys at ACL. Just my opinion.

If it is true that several big name acts fell through at the last minute then there should be a lot of money sitting on the table for a big headline act to be added. Obviously the pool of big attention getting acts is limited but the right amount of money could get some great acts to the farm. The middle of this line-up is solid but the headliners are weak sauce. It would only take a couple of the right adds to make it a stellar lineup. I was so let down by the last few names ending with Stevie Wonder yesterday that I still feel bummed about it.

Because of the twiiter announcement - Does anyone think that we are going to get an announcement between 2:55 and 3:00 since that's where the clock is frozen on?
No it didn't. And your not even close to funny. Have fun partying til twelve, and make sure you are quiet when you get back to camp, we don't want the helicopters to come or anything. Why can't you just be happy that you like your lineup and leave this board alone. People who get kicks out of talking shit online just to piss people off are fucking losers.
You are completely right man. I totally forgot Jimmy Cliff i have no idea how. The other three I just haven't really listened to enough to consider them like that, but what I have heard of them I love and I'll probably agree with you on all four. I also referenced Nas with the god's son remark, him and damien is such a great show.
John Prine may be the biggest one, with the exception of Stevie Wonder. He is folky, which isn't everyone's cup of tea, but consider these quotes:
"Prine’s stuff is pure Proustian existentialism. Midwestern mindtrips to the nth degree. And he writes beautiful songs. I remember when Kris Kristofferson first brought him on the scene. All that stuff about “Sam Stone” the soldier junky daddy and “Donald and Lydia,” where people make love from ten miles away. Nobody but Prine could write like that." - Bob Dylan
Q: Have you given up hope of finding a replacement for Neil Young or John Lennon? RW: "Well, no, I mean… no, I haven’t given up hope at all. If one comes along I’ll notice it. John Prine is one but he’s almost a contemporary." - Roger Waters
"The most surreal moment, I mean I've had a few of them, but playing on stage with John Prine, because he's like my idol." - Amos Lee
"If God's got a favorite songwriter, I think it's John Prine." - Kris Kristofferson

Im just not sure what you guys were "promised"? Bitch away (not saying you personally) This is my fav lineup sorry some of you feel differently. Theres a million other festivals. Hope to see some of you at those

I keep thinking this is a dream. This was supposed to be the highlight of my summer and its all come down crashing. I mean, I feel so stupid for feeling this way but i downright feel depressed. Call me stupid but I cant help it.
If the week rolls around before Roo and DMB, KOL, Stevie Wonder, and Jay Z are the first four names on the lineup then Roo veterans have a right to feel let down. With the economy the way it is and all of the competion for music festival dollars, this current lineup is not going to get over 60,000 attendees this year. I love Roo and it is one of those things I look forward to as much as anything each year. I already have my tickets and will attend regardless. However most people that were potential Roo customers or were on the fence won't give up the amount of money for the tickets and travel to see this lackluster top of the lineup.
That being said, these will not be the top four names on the lineup. There was obviously something that fell through in the weeks approaching the announcement date and the promoters were just not able to come to an agreement in time. Once they see that how the ticket orders match up with past years, it will give the promoters an idea on what exactly they need to do to replace the act(s) that could not be locked up.
The lineup overall minus the top though is very good. I actually see more acts this year that I want to see than any other time. It just seems though like a good football team without a quarterback in place (headliner). They pick up an All-Pro for that position and maybe fill in a position or two then it is back to winning.
The headliners are what gets a person to Bonnaroo the 1st time. The undercard is what keeps them coming back.
this year is going to be my first bonnaroo and i am going 100% for the undercard. i will not watch KoL under any circumstances and will probably only catch the DMB show because they will be closing out the festival. i really have no interest in the headliners at all but i think its still a very solid lineup

I guess Not...I hate to be negative but I have a bad feeling that the announcement is really small or I can see them NOT DOING ONE AT ALL!

If AC/SF really do read these boards, I wanted to add my comments. I am really suprised by the headliner letdown. Every year it has been a tradition for my group to all go to the headliner shows as a group and spread our blanket on the grass in the back and chill while watching the people dance and twirll with the glowsticks and hoops and all. It was a sight to behold and we always liked the music. This year we won't do this for Stevie Wonder or KOL. We will be back at camp with our own party or napping before the late night shows. I really can't picture KoL playing unapposed and having that huge field filled with people wanting to see them. I don't even picture a line of people yelling at security to let them in Centeroo for the show like I remember in years past. I don't hate KoL or anything, but they are really more of a band-of-the-hour type of act.
I know that the KoL are the B'roo darlings for the promotors, but do they really think that field will be filled with 60,000+ people for this show?
(they ought to open the other stages/tents for the 8pm slot this year)

I am so excited to get into him and the rest of the lineup. It's a fucking great lineup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a 'roo rookie and was hyped beyond belief before the lineup was posted. Looking at the lineup from '09 and Coachela '10 i was hopeful this would be the year to make the 15hr trek.
There are quite a few acts on the undercard that get me frothy at the mouth; Edward Sharpe, Flaming Lips playing Dark Side, Dead Weather, Marley, Phoenix, Norah Jones, Michael Franti, LCD, Tori Amos, National, Dropkick Murphys, Against Me!, Disco Biscuits, Calexico, Gaslight Anthem, Blitzen Trapper, Ingrid - to name a few.
The problem is the headliners. I convinced a few people to make the trek with me solely on headliners of Coachella and past 'roos.
The plan this year was to compare roo and Rothbury. We needed rothbury to be significantly better to justify the extra three hour drive each way. With this starting lineup, the folks at roo should feel lucky that competition is gone. I hope they surprise me. But in this economy, I wouldn't be surprised by a slimmed down lineup, extra light on the headliners. I'll be there and I'll love it, but this lineup is way too light at the top. IMHO.
