Chime in and this should be an interesting thread. For years now I have been using a camelbak @ roo. However in the further refinement of my gear I have recentely purchased a steel water bottle. Mainly this is for backup in case my ageing bladder ever has a problem. Anyway now that I have gotten the steel water bottle I can use it for other things such as shoving an esbit tablet in an altoids mini tin and boiling water to add to a dehydrated backpacking meal. This would eliminate waiting in line at food vendors and give me a nice hot tasty meal. I get the mountain house variety and they are good. I have been working my gear down to minimum using an ultra-light backpacker frame of mind. I really enjoy camping but have decided that the car camping that we do @ roo. Is different then if you really want to go out in woods. Using these meal I also do not have to worry about keeping food cold just my drinks. However I really also love my camelbak especially those elxir tablets they make that turn your water into 2 liters of fizzy fruity drink. Another flipside however is that a bladder takes up a lot of room in your backpack. A water bottle is more compact and better able to be adjusted I do know I can get flavor enhancers for the water that I can just dump in a stick after centeroo security. Anyway lets here someone else's opinion I plan on turning this int a teva vs. croc type thread

I have been thinking about a camelbak for a while too. I like that security allows you to bring it in, allowing you to use nice fresh water from camp instead of the sandy reclaimed water in Centeroo. But on the other hand, I feel like having a bag of water strapped to my back may make it tougher to dance and move freely.
In past 'roo's I've had no problem with hydration, so I doubt I'll make any changes. But I keep hearing about the virtues of the camelbak and thought I might give it a shot.

Slapchop now with punctuation and to think some people considered me a troll not to long ago. Sigh I have been in the Roo game for more then a minute. I am planning to devote more of my energy towards helping people get ready now. The sensless dribble is fun but alas its time to get down to brass tacks now where is that fireapple red convertible? And I agree about the camelbak not allowing you to be as free to dance etc. perhaps a switch up this year?

Bollocks to all this talk about not being able to dance with a camelbak. If anything, I dance even harder with a camelbak on. Water bottles don't work for me, because I absolutely hate carrying things in my hands during festivals. So I gotta agree with questionablesanity, camelbak FTW.
Besides, you can take a camelbak off and put it on the ground if it becomes too cumbersome. No big deal.

Oh I am taking my camelbak but once inside centeroo it is going to become an absinthe dispenser. The water bottle is for when the camelbak is empty. And to cook with. yes thats right I cook in centeroo!! Im assuming most people will be bringing a backpack to roo. Really I do not see how some people get by without one all the free stuff you get walking around etc. Plus camera and and mst important airline mode turned of phone, camera, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, money, i.d. etc. etc.

I use esbit tablets small compact flame throw the tablet in a mini altoids tin stick a steel water bottle on top with 160z. water 10 minutes later water is hot dump it in an above mentioned backpacking meal the fire is not really visible or anything because the burning tablet is all you need. In a pinch if most stuff got confiscated like tablets could use alcohol hand sanitizer. They will never take the food steel water bottle or the altoids tin there is no reason to and who has ever had their hand sanitizer taken away. I'm slick. They might take the esbit tablets but i doubt they will not everyone knows what they are and it looks like a piece of gum.

I have gotten stroganoff and chicken teriyaki and lasagna so far planning on scooping up some chili mac. Also if you want to bother with washing a container use the instant hamburger helper packets available at all fine wal marts. I use those meals because I can throw away the package when done. Lots of plans for this type of cooking available on net look up pop can alcohol stove. And adjust to what you know you can get away with in centeroo. On a side note build a cook system for camp would be really easy and cheap less then a dollar interesting option for people flying in small lightweight, as well as saving tons of money spent on charcoal grills propane etc. this option is not for everyone but if ye are keen it will work.

I've used both - in fact, my first year, I brought both a steel water bottle and a Camelbak. The Camelbak was way more useful, because not only does it hold more liquid and allow you to drink hands-free - and this is a big advantage when you're crammed like a sardine in the middle of a crowd and can't move your arms - but it also prevents the water from heating up much.
Everyone makes a ton of mistakes their first time om the farm, no matter how much they read up on what to do and what not to do beforehand - but bringing a Camelbak was one of those things I did 100% right my first year. It's most definitely worth the investment.

I didn't find a camelbak cumbersome at all. They are ergonomically prety perfect. Mine fits me to a tee. I barely realize that I am wearing it. Plus all the nuts youcan strap to it. Last year, I had a water mister/fan, my lighter leash, hand sanitizer, and a blanket all strapped to the outside. I also carried corn, corn holder, TP, sunscreen, schedule, a liter of water, ponchos, snacks, camera etc... I can't imagine Roo without a camelbak.
Lono, I never thought you were a troll, just someone that I'd like to meet.

I bought a camelbak that had some pretty good storage space in it too and it was pretty awesome. Was able to carry all the necessities. What I'm thinking is bringing in a bottle of hand sanitizer that has some rum in it instead of sanitizer so I can keep the fun going all day. Plus its got quite a few other pouches where I could hide the goods.
3L bladder for the win too. Bigger size comes in handy, you drink a lot when its there.
How do you keep the water cold in the camelback that the part I've never figured out, that and isn't it hot to have on your back? We've been freezing water bottles for the last few years.
That's the one I got. I plan on dumping ice into the well and letting it melt throughout the day. The opening is wide enough to fit blocks of ice if you really wanted to. Ton's of space with the back pockets. May be a tad bulky to some, but like mentioned before is ergonomic and mine at least has a vented area where it sits on your back allowing airflow. I plan on spending long stretches in Centeroo, so want to have supplies on hand...
Honestly at roo, it doesn't matter if its that cold, anything to keep hydrated is a plus. I'd go through about 1-2L in an hour after I filled it up, and it was usually not too bad at the end. The bad thing is the stuff in the hose tends to be warm so your first gulp is always warm unless you lift up the spiket and pinch it so it all runs back down after you take a drink.

I just bought a used camelbak off of e-bay. I paid $14.95 for it w/ free shipping which is a LOT cheaper than the new one's that i've seen. Best part about it is that the seller claims that the bladder has never been used, so I don't have to buy a new one.
As far as keeping the water cold, I was thinking about putting a couple of frozer water bottles the the part that the bladder is in. I haven't gotten it in the mail yet so i'm not sure if they will fit.
I know water doesn't have to be cold to hydrate you... but I think that cold water will cool you off faster than lukewarm water. Plus I'm one of those people that likes all their beverages to be ICE COLD. Especially water.
Broke down & got a camelback yesterday & I think I will be very pleased with my purchase! I went with an off-brand, not actually Camelbak (too broke to justify spending that much $$ haha!) but its 2-Liter with plenty of storage space for all the essentials that need carried around.
husband is trying a camelbak this year. i cant stand stuff on my sweaty back so i am trying to find a sling for my water bottle.
i would think that steel would make your water hot in the sun. ours got hot last year in clear plastic so i am hoping the sling will help that out. i found an insulated one from nalgene.
camelbak seems to be the best option for everyone, im just a weirdo and hate wearing extra stuff.

i feel like this is the year to invest in a camelbak for me. i'm tired of carrying a gallon jug and the backpack around all the time... although it makes for a nice pillow. the backpack... not the gallon of water.

Camelbaks are awesome, have had one the last three years. It actually keeps my back cool, isn't very bulky, is incredibly useful, and carries everything you'd need in Centeroo.
Do they not make you empty your camel backs anymore? In 08' they kept making me dump mine at security so i didn't try or even pay attention last year. They also take my snacks and shit everytime so i quit trying for that too. I even told the dude I was diabetic and he basically told me sorry and to go grab something at a vendor.
As far as keeping the water cold in the camelbak. My cooler system is to freeze half my water, refridge the other half and put them in alternating layers inside my cooler (frozen, cold, frozen, cold). Anyways, I fill my camelbak up with water and cut a frozen water bottle open and drop the entire bottle shaped block of ice in the camelbak. I promise it will stay frozen for over 5 hours.

Anyone have an answer to this? I am curious as well. I didn't bother trying to bring in water in my CamelBak last year because I just assumed they would make me pour it out... has this changed?

I bring a camelbak full of ice water into centeroo every single time. On the off chance they do ask you to dump it, you can just get into another line. I have never had it questioned.
I suggest turning your camelbak around so that it is in front of you, and opening ALL the pockets before you get to the security check. They like that ;D

same here. Both my buddies have them and they never made them dump it out, that would suck. I agree with cocokittensmile, turn your bags around people, they like that
Admittedly some of these are more expensive than you might want to spend, but they are high quality and all have hydration pockets and tube holders for a camelback reservoir or similar water holding pouch. Unfortunately I think you have to either purchase the reservoir separately or have one from another Camelback or whatever, most of them do not come with. But you definitely get more space than in your average Camelback.
