So my mom has still not given me a decision on rather or not I can go to bonnaroo. she is a bit skeptical because she thinks all the do is drugs and what not. Is there a video that I can show her that describes bonnaroo and all of it's greatness? thanks
there are a lot of videos on youtube from previous years. i would just find one that maybe doesn't have any sketchy looking people in it or something. it might take some effort on your part. if your mom researches the festival on her own she's probably gonna see stuff about drug use there. it's inevitable. but just because there are drugs there doesn't mean you have to do them. bonnaroo is also the kind of festival where you can go and not drink or consume any other substances and still have a great time. and it's really safe and well organized. i would certainly play up that side of the argument when pleading your case.

Your profile says you are 20, how much of this decision is your moms? Heck I was driving solo to Phish festival and had a kid at your age.

not trying to come across as an ass here, but if you've been 3 times you should be able to convince this kid's mom without the help of people on the internet.
The bonnaroo dvd's are probably your best bet. I'd get one from the early years, or try to see if you can find some performances by artists that the kid's mom likes.

My ideas are as follows....
First thing, show her this site. Show her how the druq word is not even tolerated up here. This may help her understand that it is not all about that.
2nd, show her some videos from Bonnaroo, perhaps even download some audio sets so she can hear/see the crowd.
3rd. Show her that they have Kidz Jam at Bonnaroo. Explain to her that people take their little ones to this festival as well. Heck the person who helps run Kidz Jam is up on this board!
4th. This one might be the most risky. Tell her of your personal experiences at Roo; even the NO NO WORD!!! stuff but tell her that it DID NOT TAKE away from your awesome time on the farm. If this does not help, you may have a lost cause mate. (and be sure to show her how my word got censored up here!!!)

I have. All i can say is good luck. But in reality, he doesn't have to do a damn thing she says. I'm 20, this will be my third bonnaroo yet i know friends who are the same age as me whose mom's would be distraught over them going. Sometimes you just gotta walk hard as Dewey Cox says.

Lol...If i had an RV, my mom would love to go!!! Had me at age 16 and went to my first KISS concert at the ripe old age of 3 (Nudgent opened, how cool is that). She is the reason I love music so much today

Yeah, I think your ideal opportunity is to show the 2004 video "We Have Arrived" but, unfortunately, it is not available retail and I can't find it currently streaming anywhere. It has a great flow, takes its time, shows the good and bad of Roo and explores the non-musical experience more than any of the susequent videos. The 2007 and 2008 DVDs are pretty straight forward live music dvds. I haven't watched any of the other ones recently enough to recommend them or not. Maybe I'll rewatch the official 04 DVD now...

It might help to find the thread on the Bonnaroo website message board where a whole bunch of Bonnaroo attendees tell about what they do for a living. It will show momma that people from all walks of life have fun at Roo. She needs to know that it's not just a bunch of wooks doing the backstroke in pools of NO NO WORD!!!
But, then again, why is mom involved in this decision? If it were me at the age of 20, I would respectfully tell my folks that this is where I planned to be, and I would give them 2 or 3 phonecalls throughout the weekend, out of courtesy. Mom's probably just worried about the infinite possibilities of things that could happen.
Aside from the music, the reason I go to Bonnaroo is ....... the infinite possibilities of things that could happen. ;-)
The 04 DVD could be a go. It's about four hours long and not in the most convenient set up but it does some of the local colour in addition to the music.

Of course there are going to be drugs there, but you make a decision whether your weekend is going to be about drugs or music. For me it's no contest. And that's basically what I told my mom the first time I went.

I can totally understand parents still being a factor at that age...my first 'roo was when I was 20, and luckily my parents didn't have a problem with it but I certainly would have considered them to have a say in the decision.
Anyway, I'd say the big thing is - be honest! Do NOT try to pretend everything at Bonnaroo is totally innocent, because nobody will ever buy that. But just try to show her that it's really not ABOUT that. I agree that the DVDs might be a good idea if she's willing to watch them, and maybe also some photo albums and stuff online. And I also second the idea of having her take a look at this board. If she sees that what we're discussing is the music, the food, how to set up the perfect campsite, the looks vs comfort debate regarding Crocs, and more music, that might help.
And then there's always the "if I was going to do that stuff I would just do it here, I wouldn't pay $250 to do it at a music festival that I'd end up not remembering" argument...but even though it's a good point and a pretty logical argument, I'd imagine it can be a bit risky when parents are concerned!

Haha I live in North Carolina, and I've had friends with parents like that. But the truth of the matter is, if he's your roommate he obviously doesn't live with her (unless he's moving home from college for the summer or something), and unless she's buying his ticket there really shouldn't be anything stopping him from buying it and going. He could always make it an issue about her not trusting him if she's capable of being put on a guilt trip. Maybe not though.
I was 18 at my first roo in 2004. Luckily my mom is far from strict... She was there too with a friend of hers. I would have went regardless though. Parents have to let go at some point. Sounds like your buddy needs to man up and start making decisions for himself.

good luck and hope you and/or your friend can make it, whoever this thread is about. to tell you the truth, i turn 29 next weekend and my parents still don't like the idea of me going to roo. might be cause the past couple times i've gone alone and i guess they just fear the worst, maybe on the drive down there. or it might be cause my mom's a worrier, which i also got from her. sure, i worry about my safety on the drive down there and back, but i know i'm not gonna ingest anything that would hurt me. i don't drink in the sun cause it just makes me feel like crap. i always stay hydrated and have plenty of water nearby. the sun and heat doesn't appear to be as bad as it used to be, and i make sure to load up on sunscreen before leaving camp, so i have no fear of obtaining skin cancer. my only real concern like i said is the drive down and back. i make sure my car is in tip top shape and i take it slow, obey all the traffic laws, then i let loose once on the grounds. it'll be my second year covering the festival for my blog, so i've kinda put my focus more into that than partying like the first 2 years i went. its not all bad going thru roo sober. you don't have to worry about getting sick or anything and i remember my entire 09 experience clear as day. although i know not everyone would agree with me on that. but thats the truth. some people just have a little too much a little too fast. last year, just on the first day, i saw 2 or 3 people pass out, and their eyes roll back into their head. right nearby me. white as a ghost. limp like a biscuit. scariest crap i've ever seen. even saw one of them spit up a bunch of blood after his friend pounded on his chest. i just never understood people who took it that hard that quick. you definitely gotta take it slow. 4-5 days on a farm in the sun is a long time. seems longer than it actually is. and of course theres that whole "culture shock" i guess is what they call it. thats the one thing i never have gotten used to since first going in 05. the place always seems so much bigger than the last time i've been. i'll tell you, once you get to your camp and walk around a bit, you'll be surprised at how big 700 acres is and how many people like 70-80,000 people are. i don't think i'll ever get used to the size factor of the fest but i try not to let it get to me anymore. i think i've had some mild anxiety cases there but nothing severe. the worst case was when i went to hookahville last year, although that fest only gets about 10,000. i think it had to do with a new environment, hardly any money and not telling anyone that i went. i just left one day, didn't let anyone know what i was up to and felt a little guilty about that.
