Being a Roo vet, I know that two key things to have are ice and beer. Both of which cost an arm and a leg inside. I'm wondering if anyone has ever gotten dry ice and brought that in, if so, where did you get it and does it do the job? Also, what is the rules regarding kegs, can you bring some into the camps? Thanks friends.
Dry ice would freeze a keg up, and kegs are not allowed. That being said I am going to try this year, albeit without dry ice, it is way too cold to have in with a keg.

if you put a big chunk of dry ice wrapped in news paper and keep it in your cooler with regular ice too... it will keep it extremely cold and keep the ice from melting...(just keep the dry ice elevated so it stays dry)
We did this in 2008, it was the difference between having to get ice every day and having to get it only once all weekend

There's a dry ice thread around here somewhere. We bought about 15 lbs of dry ice to put in the bottom of a 70 qt. 5 day cooler. We still had frozen water on Monday. Works like a charm. We kept another 5 day filled with ice and only had to buy ice once while at Roo.

that's the one. We've done it the past two years and it hasn't let us down yet, especially in the beer cooler. Wrap it in newspapers and put it on top.
Do you guys recommend newspaper more than an old towel? I read putting frozen water bottles, then an old towel covering dry ice over that really helps. Is actual ice necessary?
Where can we get dry ice? I feel like that's harder to find. Does Walmart have both? or just regular ice??

I suppose a towel would work just as well, I just haven't tried it. I'd say you still need ice though, the dry ice is to complement the ice and keep it colder for longer. We've always gotten it at publix. They have a big Styrofoam cooler where they keep it.
I always get it at Continental Carbonics, they will slice it however you want and it is less than a dollar a pound. It is located right off of 440 and Nolensville road.

I didn't use any actual ice in the with the dry ice and everything stayed really cold. Someone on this board last year said that dry ice will make regular ice evaporate faster.

I used a combination of dry and wet ice last year, it worked pretty well I suppose, there was still cold water at least (maybe some ice) in the cooler by Monday morning. The problem I had was water bottles staying TOO cold. I put down maybe 8 lbs of dry ice and cover it with a towel, then unfrozen water bottles, then food and stuff. The food was fine and cold, but all of my water bottles were frozen solid by Friday if not before (left for Roo on Wednesday). Even in the Tennessee heat (which really wasn't that bad last year) it is a relatively slow process to get frozen water bottles thawed. It seems even slower when you are dying for a drink of something other than beer. So.. maybe use two towels or not as much dry ice as I did?

Found some up here, but figure it's a waste to buy food/ice before the 10+ hour drive. I will, however, freeze my water bottles beforehand. Should I just get dry ice near home? or closer to Roo? I wonder how long my frozen waters could stay frozen with just a regular bag of ice...

^I can not remember the price breakdown, but I always spend like 25 dollars on it. Also I do it differently than most people, I keep a dry ice cooler with fruit and frozen water, and transfer the waters to my drink cooler as the week goes on. I like the fruit in there towards the bottom because it will freeze and be carbonated (fizzy) when you eat them, strawberries and cherries are my favorites for this. Also do not sleep in a closed car with the dry ice cooler in there with you, it is not likely but possible that you could drown in co2, and that is just a silly undignified way to die at Bonnaroo.
Eek. that would not be cool. I plan on keepin my cooler in my trunk, maybe, but definitely not sleepin in there with it, and if i am...note to self: crack the window open, lol
Jess is spot on on the way to manage your water. Don't freeze all of it, or move your frozen water bottles to your drinking water cooler so they thaw. We always freeze about a third of the water and leave the rest in a cooler with ice.
Remember, you can drink warmish water if you have to, but you can't drink a frozen water bottle.

The first year I went (2007), while waiting in line to get into the grounds in our cars, the SUV in front of us was thoroughly searched after security saw 2 kegs in the back of it. Like others said, kegs aren't allowed, and might even do you more harm than just the keg taken.

I think I bought 15 lbs for a 70 qt. cooler. I just bought enough to layer the bottom of the cooler, then placed cardboard on top of that, then frozen water bottles, then everything else. I think I'll steal Jess' idea this year by transferring water bottles to another cooler for thawing.
Buy slabs. $15 worth of dry ice is a lot better than buying bag after bag of ice at Roo.

Dry ice is def. the way to go. We used it last year and only bought a couple of bags of ice for our beer cooler (I didn't use dry ice in it). We still had frozen water when we got home on Monday.
Last year in tent only these guys beside us dug a hole in the ground, lined it with a trash bag and ice and put a mini keg in it. I guess they snuck it in, idk? They went out every morning and iced it down. They shared and it was really good beer but it looked like more work than it was worth to me.

You should be ok, if you look close to 21. Unless you're the lucky ones to get searched by the cops. I've never seen anyone getting searched and have to pour out their alcohol.

Im thinking about getting creative in the way I bring it in. You got any ideas?
Don't advertise on a public message board that anyone underage will be bringing alcohol in. Also big resealed cases of soda at least two layers of soda top and bottom.

Something that works really well for us in the past (Bonnaroo and NASCAR Races) is to ice everything down 3-4 days before leaving.
We will have two coolers filled with beverages the Monday before leaving. It takes a lot of energy to get everything (beer, water and cooler) cold. Ice is cheeper while at home (store or making it) then while on the road.
With all that done on Wednesday i drain the melted water from the cooler and top off with a bag of ice. The ice has lasted until the Tuesday when we get home.
