So I'm green lighted for a press pass through an online publication that has a good relationship with AC Entertainment. However, I am being told that in no way can the press pass be sent to me before the festival (which I figured would be the case). However, I am being told that I cannot pick up my press pass until 10am on the first day of the festival at the same local radio station that distributes the passes each year.
By waiting until 10am, not only will there be a back log at the radio station for all others who will be there at the earliest possible time but by the time I get into the entrance line I'll be putting myself in a bad position in that I may not get into the festival until around 5 or 6pm. Originally my party was going to get in line at 7am on Thursday and hopefully get in by noon or so. Now I'm not sure what to do.
How did those with press passes handle this situation last year? What are your plans for this year?
I don't know this for sure but I would bet those with press passes get to go in the back entrance. Which ='s no lines
I've never heard that and I'm with 5 others in my RV who do not have passes. How can they differentiate when you're sitting in miles of traffic. Is a Roo representative going to go to the end of the line and find people with press passes to drive into a special media road? If this is the case, then I hit the jackpot and have no worries.
have your friends drop you off at the station and then just hitch a ride to Roo from there with someone else who is picking up a pass.
And the next part of this is my party wants to get in line at 7am. I'll wait around to get my pass at maybe 10:30am. By the time I get to line, my party might already be in.
What am I supposed to do then? Walk in, do they let people just walk in with tickets?
The main issue with this I want to be in on time to see the early Thursday acts. My main writing assignment.

if your experience is anything like mine last year, you will not be leaving the radio station until the early afternoon, no matter that time you get there.
i would advise you to separate from your herd, have them drop you off, let them take all your gear and go on without you... find an alternate means to the fest, taxi, hitch a ride, etc... and meet up with your friends wherever they are camped inside. if you're not feeling like waiting in line, there are a few restaurants you can hang out in while waiting for the radio station to open.

My main assignment is going to be the Thursday shows, the lesser known acts. So how does this situation make any sense? If I don't get into line until the early afternoon than I surely won't be getting into the festival until late afternoon to the early evening. Then factor in setting up my belonging (and minimal equipment) followed by a possibly 45 minute+ walk to Centeroo - that could blow my assignment. It's a major concern.
I spoke to the publication's editor and co-editor and neither want to hear it. They aren't making the trip and they want these acts covered. Chances are many of the acts that they want covered are playing Thursday. So knowing their mentality they would want me to go into the festival without a pass just to cover the acts and take pictures. And if I can't do any interviews, so be it. But I'm sure they'll bitch about that too.
I'm in a real tough spot. I wish I was covering the Friday and Saturday acts.

it makes plenty of sense, actually. arrange to take a taxi and walk in...no line. acts don't start on thursday until the late afternoon.
and if your assignment depends on being there, why would you even bother setting up your tent before heading into centeroo? hell i wouldn't even check in at your camp if that were the case. walk in, with your bare necessities to do the job, and go straight to centeroo. and try to set up your actual interviews for friday during the day, chances are the up and coming bands will still be around, they want the coverage.
people make due with these constraints year after year, it's not impossible. but you have to be open to suggestion and also be flexible.
We did this last year my son had to get his ticket at the radio station at 10 . the people with the tickets didn't show until after ten and by that time there were maybe 100 to 150 people waiting. Many of the people even though they had confirmation letters had a problem getting their tickets. so we didn't get out of there until maybe 11:30. from there we got into a line that started just around the corner and around 3 to 3 1/2 hours later we got into the festival. Acts on Thursday don't start ubtil 7:00 so we had plenty of time to set up and still see the acts. the radio station is maybe 4 miles the main entrance off the hyway and in that heat it would be a long hot walk.
I was wrong shows start at 5 but we still had plenty of time to see shows on Thursday. But if I could I would avoid getting on I-24 it'll take all day if you get in line after 11 in the afternoon
In your situation...if you absolutely HAVE to cover the Thurs acts starting at 5....I would just blow off a press pass...or wait and arrange to pick it up on Friday morning if you have interviews set up in the press area for Friday. Get in as early as you can on Thur...chances are you can get a good spot to take pics from at a tent or the Which stage and do a good review then no lines on Friday to mess with on getting the press pass on Friday morning in case you can score an interview in the media area for late Fri morning or afternoon. If you aren't getting a photo pass...then the only thing the press pass buys you anyway is access to the media area for interviews and press cons.

Yhis sounds the most sensible approach, besides the "just suck it up" responses I've been getting. My concern with this is two-fold. How will I take good pictures of the Thursday acts without a photo pass if I wait until Friday. And what is the procedure on Friday for leaving and reentering the festival?
