This year I'm going to sleep in the back of my Cherokee rather than pitching a tent.
I'm thinking of putting a metallic looking tarp over he top of the Cherokee to kinda reflect some sun, and covering the outside of the windows with those cheap space blankets you get in the camping section of Wal Mart.
That and a small exhaust fan should make it at least as liveable as a tent right?
I'm thinking it's gotta be quieter, and darker than a tent.
i've never used space blankets but i have slept in my grand cherokee many times including a week in south carolina in august. it was hot but better than my tent once the sun came up.

What about with the car running and th a/c on? I don't think it's necessary to sleep all night like this, but we definitely "extended" our sleeping time in the morning by sleeping in the a/c for a couple of hours. It was probably the most refreshing sleep we got the whole weekend.

The first year I went there was 3 of us and we overestimated the size of our tent and only 2 of us could fit comfortably so we took turns sleeping in the car. I liked the car better than the tent. But we were also right next to trees that blocked the sun a little bit and the car didn't get too hot.
my jeep is blak/darkgrey and it was over 100 when i slept in it in charleston so i doubt bonaroo will be as bad, and sleeping an suv with fold down backseats there is no ass sweat/fart/muddy jeans mixture on your face.

we usally sleep in the back of our jeep liberty just fold down the back seats, shove a air mattress back there and cover the windows with black trash bags or something....make shure you crack your windows a bit so you get some fresh air in there.....and no I would not turn on the A/C like others said it will smell like @##hole..
I've slept in my car back to back years now. Got great sleeps, noise was minimal and I don't think I could ever go back to a tent.
And provided your car's exhaust pipe isn't directly in the face of other campers, I think people should be allowed to turn their cars on for twenty minutes or so every day, if for no other reason than to use to power to charge cameras, phones, etc.
During the monsoon of '08, our tent got flooded and we needed to sleep in the car pretty much all weekend. It can get hot as hell, but it was definitely our best option at the time and something I'd be comfortable going again.
I bought some screens for car windows... kind of like a sleeve that you put over the window and it lets some air flow. I found them randomly at Tuesday Morning for about $10. Last time I slept in a car in FL for a week, we safety-pinned an old bedskirt to the interior ceiling of the car. It made curtains all around so we could have privacy in the car.
Reviving this thread since I was thinking about sleeping in the car at roo. I drive a nissan versa hatchback and the back seats fold down. I thought maybe I could set up an e-z up over the car, or at least over the back half of the car, to keep it cool. Then, if there's room, set up another e-z up at the end of the one over the car, to use for seating, kitchen, etc. What say ye, bonnaroo vets? Is it comfortable sleeping in the back of a car with the hatch open? Seems like it would be cooler but idk. Will I have room for 2 e-z ups?

I had room for 2 ez ups last year. If you try it, bring like 10 queen or king sheets and fasten them to the ez ups so you make a cave with your ez ups and sheets

This would be fine, the only thing is the inside of your car is going to get caked with dust/dirt and you'll need to detail the inside big time.
I camped next to someone 2 years ago that slept in their car with the windows up every day. Just looking at that person made me want to throw up, they were gross even by Roo standards.

I unknowingly left my car window down from Thursday til Sunday this year. Drivers seat was soaked, and the car was coated with dust. Biggest Roo mistake I've made.
I slept in my car last year on Thursday Sproat and Captain Jack can testify to that. My friends were coming in the next day with a larger camp site with solar showers and an Ezup and such. My tent had died last year and I was kinda short on cash. It really did not bother me because I had a canopy to go over the car and last year was exceptionally cool. I even ran my heater for a bit when I got back to my car and just cranked the seat back. I could see this being a problem if it is super hot but I managed to do quite well. And I did not mind especially knowing there wa two 55 gallon drums filled with honest to God Kentucky tap water on the way and a solar shower set up. I would say be cautious about this and be prepared to bail to Centeroo if it gets ballsack hot glass can increase the suns rays tremendously if the vehicle is not shaded. I knew I was bailing at first light on Friday and hitting up Centeroo for clean toilets and shade and brunch. When me and my friends made it back to my car so I could get some stuff we ate and drank everything there and gave away anything else including 2 cases of water to some people that only brought one case for like 6 wooks in a mini-van. They were mighty thankful. After that things get kinda hazy but basically I got seperated and did go back to my car Friday Night and slept in it again. It was actually the most comfortable sleep ever at Bonnaroo. So with judicious good sense and a working knowledge of Centeroo yes you can do this but I am a seasoned vet. Plus I know of several shade areas. My friends buddy thought that I was dead because he had never been to Bonnaroo before and was surprised as shit when I came rolling up the next day in my car as I knew they were parked byu the Interstate near the RV area. I talked some security lady into letting me drive there claiming my gf had gotten sick and was staying with friends who had an RV and I needed to bring our stuff over. I had never really driven around inside Bonnaroo during the festival before it was weird. After that I was in the big camping area with my buddies and a shower and it was all good until they got lost on Saturday lol but that is another story. So use care if you try this route.

I solely sleep in my car now. Mostly due to my severe arachnophobia (and the fact my tent broke) and a terrible experience in 2011 involving a not sober mind and laying down in my tent to find a 2 huge spiders crawling around on my bed. Never again.
Now what I do is borrow my mom's Expedition, throw a reflective sun visor in the front window, then cover the windows with mosquito netting and roll them down. I blow up full size mattress, take out the 2nd and 3rd row seats, and throw it in the back and I'm good to go. With two tent fans going I slept until 10-11 every day last year doing this.
