They did it to keep people in the front from getting crushed by people trying to push up from the back. Happened at Rockslide Festival in the Late 90s during the Pearl Jam show. So Safety is the reason. VIPs can use the Bleachers and the VIP area to the left of the What Stage.
Now that I really look at it, it may even be a big ass turtle... it has legs and a relatively round body, and the way it lunges is like a turtle. I dunno, though, still one of the craziest things I've casually seen on this board.
Why do they even have a pit? Why have a rail separating the people super close from everyone else?
I always thought that was for VIP
I've gone every year from '04 on. I never saw a show anywhere near the front of What stage until the year they implemented this pit setup. People would camp out all day just to see the last act of the day from up close. It's not just for VIP; anybody can go in there. That seems to be the biggest misconception I hear every year. Even though it says right there in the schedule book exactly how it works, most people just assume that it's for VIPs only. Not only is it a safety measure, but it adds to the amount of actual fans for each act that get to make it to the front. They need to do this (even if on a smaller scale) for the Which stage too, (in addition to adding screens).
I must say though, waiting for Pearl Jam when they opened up the gates, it was almost antithetical to the whole endeavor as people still pushed from the rear and the entire group of people waiting to get in were crushed together. But believe me, once you get in that pit area, it's a damned good view and it feels good.

I never go to the pit.. My heart wants too, but Since I'm like 7'0 tall I feel like a summers breeze if I do
Go to the pit and stand at the back rail. There is enough room b/t the pit rail and the outer rail that you shouldnt distort the view of people behind you. Also, its nice to lean on the back rail without people pushing on you and trying to get better position and you still have an awesome view.
Do you guys think it will be possible to go from Jeff Ross at the comedy tent into the pit for Dead Weather? Or should I wait in line during Jimmy Cliff?
Also, how long do you guys think the Jay-Z pit line will be?
I think you'll be fine for Dead Weather, but for Jay-Z you should be in line during or right before Stevie ends depending on how close you want to get.

I will probably arrive about 15 minutes early for Dead Weather and I'm not anticipating any trouble getting in the pit. Probably will get in line for Jay-Z around the end of Stevie's set, although I would like to be in the pit for both of those shows, so we'll see.

Yep, it's def a turtle and a mouse...and it's the coolest thing I've ever seen.

Depends if you want to be on the rail. If you want the rail you may have to wait most of the day. If you just want to get into the pit I would think you should be fine if you get in line during the dead weather.
From my experience in the pit last year for Bruce Springsteen.....
I waited in the line for 8 hours. They had some kind of self numbering system they tried to impose. Most of the people were nice but a few were real jerks especially when it finally came time to line up and go in. There was a lot of pushing a shoving and it was very very very crowded. Of course once the show started it was awesome. Very crowded. Hard to breathe at times. But most def one of the highlights of my life. Seeing Bruce from damn near the front row was amazing.
I had the same question-how early for Jay-Z? I was thinking about getting there halfway through Dead Weather's set and just camping out during all of Stevie. I definitely want a rail for Jay-Z.
Also with that, even though I think this has already been answered in a different way-do they care if you camp out? if i'm towards the front of the line during multiple shows, security is fine with that right?
How does the lineup work? You just stand as close to the entrance to the pit as you can?
Like what would be the difference between the people who are say in line for Stevie and the people who are in line for Jay-Z during Dead Weather?
Never been in the pit before..
From my experience there are seperate lines. I was in the line for Bruce and a seperate line started for Wilco. You should be able to walk up and ask someone which act the line is for.
Scoobiedoo were you on the right or left side of the pit for Bruce, because my experience was similar to NoD's (I was on the left). I got in line right after the Wailing Souls played and was about 3 back on the inside rail. Also, everyone I was around was super nice and the people waiting in front and behind me were nice enough to let one of my roo mates hold my spot when i went in the pit for wilco. Also, I can't recall any pushing or shoving when we were going in.
