I tried one of those 5 hour energy shots once and it felt weird, I got a lil nauseous, and got the serious blatheronaboutnothings. I'm wired to be a bit of a spaz in the first place, so I decided to just stick to coffee.
So it's 3am and I am still awake. Couldn't figure out why having such a hard time sleeping tonight. Um, probably the 5-hour energy. The hit from it was so subtle, I didn't realize I was more awake than I should be with the amount of sleep and sort of day I had. But it sucks now to be up at 3am with nothing to stay up for.
Still not sure if I will risk these things for Bonnaroo...

alieblue- yeah but at bonnaroo at 3 am there will still be stuff goin' on (ps love your pics and pregnancy advice, my bff and fellow rooer will be 6 wks at roo, so i want her to be as comfy as possible!)
as for 5-hr energy shots, yeah they work really well for me, i dont always drink the whole shot though. most of the time i split it with a friend, or you could always drink the other half later if you feel like you need it, they have screw on caps so you can carry them with you. the extra strength felt exactly like the regular strength to me though. but when i feel super sleepy and cant keep my eyes open, then i'll drink one and it just makes me feel more awake and alert without feeling all jittery and hyper.
but yeah like previous posters said dont start out the day with them, just time it right and take one right before you want to start dancing all night!! (or at least that's what i plan on doing ) drink lots of water during the day and pace yourself to stay up for late night!
fwiw....I strongly recommend not taking prescription stimulants if you plan on drinking within 4-6 hours. Especially late night. I've had some minor seizures when I used to do this. It's part of the standard warnings that come with that medication, and I promise you there's a reason for that.
Caffeine can usually keep me awake. But a nap somewhere in the early evening -- even just 30-60 minutes -- makes a big difference too.

I tried one recently and did not drink the whole thing, approximately half. With that amount I did not feel weird at all and I got some more awake and alert time.
back when I used to work night shift I tried starbucks doubleshots a couple times when I was really struggling...they work pretty well too but I found that the crash and burn was pretty bad. Always timed that so I could get in bed and sleep with room darkened and some nice new age tunes playing softly in the background. I may bring a handful, though, because I do like my cup of coffee in the morning, and in the heat a cool coffee drink is much better than a hot one
If the 5-hour energy makes you sick, switch to the 6-Hour Energy.
Seriously. It comes in many flavors and is pretty good. Only problem I've experienced is the sudden urge to poop.
I'd never considered naps. About what time will it be cool enough to retreat into the tent for a power nap? Skipping headliners sounds like a good idea. Apparently I'm the only one who wants to see KOL so I'll be skipping Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z.
Friday night is going to be easy. Big nap during KoL, 5 hour energy around 11:30 PM, TBK, LCD, and Galactic until sunrise. 5 hour energy works great, less caffeine than the Monster and Red Bull drinks lots of B12. B12 is also helps prevent that hungover feeling the next day.
Saturday will be tougher, gotta see a lot of acts all day log. No nap during headliner spot either.
In '08 I was pregnant and was one of the only 2 people in my group who was able to stay up until the end of the Kanye show/sunrise and other latenight shows. So it can really be done without party favors or tons of caffeine.
1. Prioritize. So you miss a headliner, but if your priority is a show at 1am, then prep for it.
2. If you want to be up at night, then don't spend a ton of time in the hot early day sun. The sun will drain you faster than anything else. Wear a hat, choose to see something in a tent, take a midday nap at camp.
3. Drink water, water and water. Keep that system hydrated and flushed.
4. If you do want to use an energy drink or caffeine, take it only at the evening, not all day. Don't drain yourself. Concentrate the times when it is needed.
5. Lots of protein and slow-burning foods. I had cheese sticks, peanut butter and jelly on multigrain bread, granola bars to snack on during the day.
6. Never get super thirsty, super hungry, or super tired. Pace yourself. Small meals before you even feel hunger. Keep yourself at a nice even keel so you don't have your blood sugar jump all over the place.
7. Nap. Nap at a chill show off to the side, go back to camp, gosh I even napped in the beer tent. Nap in 15-minute increments and you will wake refreshed. 30 minutes is actually better than 40, 60 is better than 70. Set a timer on your phone so you don't wake up groggy and off-kilter. Once you wake, drink water to get your body going again without killing it.
Sleep during KOL, then stay awake the rest of the weekend on pure excitement and adrenaline. If you get tired and need me to chase you around centeroo banging some pots and pans together, let me know. I'd totally do that for any of you fine, fine people.

Sub-lingual B12! Also, try to go off caffeine for a month or so before roo to get your body over any tolerance you might have. Then, at Roo, abstain during the day so you don't get dehydrated, but have a cup or two or three to keep you going all night!

I've never had a problem staying up for late night. I guess I just pace myself well and usually will drink a coke or mountain dew at around midnight. I did take a nap in 2009 during Bruce though.
The real night owls will know where I'm at here. Just ignore your fatigue. It sounds odd/dangerous but I've found that If I want to see late night shows, my body will find a way to make up for it. I realize that sounds like an unhealthy idea but usually for me it manifests itself in the form of involuntary daytime naps (stay at medium-rage mode the whole festival and there won't be any one night that does you in).
If you take a nap during a headliner for a late night make sure to set an alarm.
Last year I made the mistake of napping during Stevie Wonder and slept until 4 am, I missed Jay Z and Deadmau5. I was pretty bummed when I woke up. I ran out to the road and asked some guy what time it was and if Jay Z had played, he's like dude it's 4 am.. haha

I like the way you think. The late-nights are a must. I don't think my body would even let me miss it.
decide which of the latenights (friday or saturday) is most important for you and take it easy the night before. if saturday night is where you are planning your biggest party, go to sleep earlier/ no druqs friday night. same for thursday -> friday if friday is when you want to rage the hardest).
EAT FOOD. you don't have to see a show for every time-slot there is. if there is nothing you are dying to see for a two hour or so period, find some tasty munch and nourish your body and chill out in one of those hammocks in centeroo.
CHILL THE FUCK OUT during the day. only go to stage shows before 5pm if they are a top priority must see act for you. the sun is ruthless and will wear your ass out. tent shows are fine as long as you are under the roof in the shade and hydrating.
Last year I was a night owl, and even I struggled to stay going past 1 am Friday night. Then again I was doing a lot Friday during the day.
Saturday I took it easy, didn't really get adventurous until 6 in the afternoon (I missed M&S and Isis though, but the heat was crazy)... but was able to make it to nearly 4 am and saw Gwar.
if you want to make it late, take it easy in the daytime. And sleep as much as possible the night before.
Force yourself to sleep in. I know its tough when the sun starts cookin around 8 am, but if you can make it to 10. Those extra hours pay off alot. Dehydration is the number one energy killer, so pace yourself if you are drinkin alcohol and drink LOTS of water. I recommend a camelback. If you are prone to sunburns, make sure you use sunblock. Burns are incredibly demotivating to catch those few extra shows. By doing this, I managed to stay up til 4-5 every night and had a blast doin it. One word of caution, if you are going to be a driver on the way back. I recommend taking poewernaps on Sunday because you will be bushwhacked on the way back.
it is much easier to stay up till 6am if you pick one eveningish show (anywhere in the 6-9pm range) and skip it and go take a nap for an hr or so. i did that this past summer and it made it way easier for me to stay up all night.

5 hour energy drinks have never worked for me I would go with sugar free rockstar or even regular rockstar
ok get ready for this train your body to stay up late. May sound crazy but just like you train for anything and your body adjusts you can train your body to stay up late. This isn't hard for me becasue I am a night owl anyways. Usual bedtime around 2am and up at 6am cup od coffee or two to get me going a bit faster and a rockstar at 2 after i have my post lunch crash.
Oh and this last one is key. They do it in vegas so you stay up later losing your money. NO CLOCKS OR WATCHES!!! If you dont know what time it is you dont get tired. I know this might be hard since there is a set schedule for bands but you really dont need a watch. You will know when your band is playing or whatever and if you do look at a clock ignore the time. Dont say "oh its only 1230" because then shortly there after you crash.
That is all I have may sound crazy but hey anything is worth a shot

definitely....phone on police siren alarm right by your head will be sure to wake you up (it has me every time! haha).

Copious amounts of illeagal substances. But ony the one that make you awake. I prefer meth out of a lightbulb.
Just kidding.
I've found that I never have a problem staying awake. My body knows it will rest on Monday.
I also don't like to stand up near the front of any of the shows. I'm more of a sitting on a blanket enjoying the music during the day person.
But I will say that last year I drank all of the wine on Saturday night and only made it half way through Bisco. My sister says one minute I was there and the next I was gone. My husband says I fell into the tent gracefully. So I guess it all worked out.
