Most of you people posting on this thread are being so immature, its crazy! Lets cut out the whole...THATS RETARDED!!!.....WRONG!!!....WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!....THEY SUCK!!!... thing you all seem to accept. This place use to be a place for free opinions and earnest discussion on topics. It is now a place where internet high fives are given for calling someones post retarded.
Also NOD, just because I like Kings, your saying that automatically means I dont like any good music? Do you really only like one genre of music? Seriously? Another very weak post from you. You dont know what kind of music is my favorite, or basically anything about me. Kings is definitely not anywhere near my favorite bands, but I still like their music.
As for UM appealing to a small audience? Like I said, give it 10 years. NO ONE thought Phish would get back together much less play Roo, it happened. The same will happen for UM, minus the break-up, if the Roo we know is even going to be around then.
Kings will be there, no doubt. Like someone said, this is their biggest act EVER. The singer is going to get up there and lip sync the whole show if he has to, but they WILL be there.

So Kings is bigger than Stevie or Bruce or Tool or dare I say, Radiohead??
Sorry man, while I agree with alot of your post that just doesn't sit well with me.

I think he meant biggest for KOL not Bonnaroo, I hope he did anyway.
This is all getting a little silly I am pretty sure they will not cancel, if they do I doubt we would get anything crazy in their slot, maybe the Flips, or if we got real lucky a Primus warm up show.
i hope WSP gets added, if for no other reason than to piss off all the handitards around here.
Wouldn't piss me off. I was already planning to skip KoL, so if they cancel (which they won't) and WSP gets added, it would not affect my plans at all.

You can't very well cite how this place "use (sic) to be a place for free opinions" while in the process get upset that people are expressing their opinions that just happen to run contrary to yours. And let's be honest, this place hasn't been a forum for earnest discussion in years, at least not between the months of January - June.
Also, while I appreciate your optimism regarding UM someday headlining, I just don't ever see it happening. They've been around for about 13 years now, and they're likely as big as they're going to get. Generally, bands don't form, reach a certain level of popularity, plateau, then suddenly experience another huge jump. They've been playing more or less the same size venues, give or take, for the past 5 years. They're big enough to headline smaller festivals, and have enough of a niche audience where they'll be a late night draw at places like Bonnaroo, but they're never going to achieve the mainstream success that Phish attained.
Phish's ascent in popularity is something of a rarity that was created by a perfect storm of circumstance: they were a hard-touring, niche band in the nascent jamband circuit with great word of mouth who happened to be hitting their stride right as the world's biggest jamband (the Grateful Dead) broke up, leaving thousands of fans without an outlet. The culture that surrounded Phish and the touring lifestyle helped immensely. If any jamband was going to replicate that success, it would have happened around the time Phish broke up in either 2001 or 2004 - none did. The closest would be Widespread Panic, but they've got a distinctly different fanbase, and have been hugely popular in the south (and to a lesser degree, the midwest/west) for a while now - they were kind of the Southern Phish.
Umphrey's McGee seems to be more akin to moe.: talented musicians who stay exclusively within the realm of "jam," and unlikely to grow much of a fanbase beyond where they are now. If anything, Umphrey's musical affectations (which run towards prog-rock and heavy metal) will keep them from truly expanding outwards, as the audience of people who like semi-heavy, progressive jam music isn't going to suddenly expand.
uhhh.....Kings of Leon? hahaha that's EXACTLY what happened to them. They had a decent fanbase, then they exploded with that shitty album....it happens all the time...

thank god Mr. Flav came through with the best post I ever read about how Umphrey's McGee will not reach the level of popularity and success that so many posters here believe they will...and I LIKE UM.

Kings of Leon were huge in the UK though, totally different scenario. If you had said Flaming Lips, then maybe, but even they had a oddball hit in "She Don't Use Jelly" that garnered them some main stream success, not to mention their sound is more poppy than UM.
Basically what it comes down to is, it doesn't happen all the time. The artists who will be headlining festivals in a few years, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, MGMT, Phoenix, all have either enjoyed huge success within their first couple albums, or in Phoenix's case, a steady rise to prominence.
my ideal scenario would be moving Tenacious D into the headlining slot (worked for outside lands) and then giving Conan their slot. that would be awesome.
