It was an awesome show. My favorite live performance ever, thus far.
I can see ppl saying they've been there done that, I can see ppl saying they don't prefer the lips live. Whatever. That doesn't take away from the fact that it was an incredible scene that unfolded beautifully. And if your friend cid happened to be with you, well, it was legendary.
i'm glad that people did get to experience a great show. Its just the exact same thing on the exact same stage on the exact same night happened 2 years ago. But if you didnt see that show two years ago, i do get why this was awesome for you.
but no, its not. stage theatrics were the same, the show was different.
The Flaming Lips 2007 Soundcheck: War Pigs RFTP Tapsmir Fight Test Mountainside Yoshimi Yoshimi 2 Vein of Stars Yeah Yeah Yeah Song Pompeii AM Gotterdammerung Taps Waiting for a Superman She Don't Use Jelly Do You Realize? --------------------------------- The W.A.N.D. What is the Light? The Observer --------------------------------- Moonlight Mile Approaching Pavonis Mons By Balloon (outro)
is not exactly the same as
The Flaming Lips 2010 The Fear Worm Mountain Silver Trembling Hands She Don't Use Jelly The Yeah, Yeah, Yeah Song I Can Be A Frog Yoshimi Battls the Pink Robots Pt. 1 See the Leaves Laser Hands Pompeii Am Gotterdammerung The WAND Do You Realize?
Speak to Me/Breathe On The Run Time/Breathe The Great Gig in the Sky Money Us and Them Any Colour You Like Brain Damage Eclipse
they were two different shows with very similar stage theatrics, nothing more.
I'm sorry your taking my opinion so personally that you actually pulled set lists. Its not like i was there with the 08 set list in hand making comparisons at every moment. What i'm basically trying to say is that no matter what order, or what songs were played, the show is the same, and has been for a long time. I also mentioned other variables that could have had an effect in the lack thereof of audience participation. He didnt even spend more than a minute and a half in the bubble because not enough people were holding him up. Ive seen him crawl around in that thing for a while before. I am not trying to insult or take away from the experience you might have had, and i am really glad it was a good one, but they do need a new show, and that was the opinion that i was expressing. Now to eat my delicious lunch.

im not taking anything personally, i could care less if anyone hated the show. i know what i got out of it.
my point is, you are just flat out wrong to say it was the exact same show, this isnt a matter of opinion, and the setlists prove it. playing the yeah yeah yeah song, the wand, and do you realize? to confetti and balloons doesnt make the two shows identical as you are trying to claim.
different setlist = different show. it really doesnt get much simpler than that.
I wasn't even there this year, but I gotta agree with candyflipped here. You can't say those two shows were exactly the same. They just weren't. Maybe the theatrics are similar, but that's a totally different setlist. Also, in '07 they had the UFO. Did they bring it this year?
You have to expect Flaming Lips shows to be somewhat similar in theatrics each time - that's just what they do. They put on an amazing spectacle. Must suck to be so jaded that something that spectacular just makes you meh...
it was pretty spectacular the first couple times i saw it. its funny that you consider a person be jaded for expressing an honest opinion and observation. Sheesh.
I was speaking in general, not specifically about you. Sorry. I just feel like you kind of know what you're in for at a Lips show. At least if you were bored by it you had other options...
i just figured since ive been consistently blown away by them, the trend would continue, and i was let down. maybe my expectations were a little high. Enjoy some CoCo! ha
I couldn't imagine a Lips show being a letdown...but I wasn't there this year so who knows - maybe I'd have felt the same. I sincerely wish you could have been blown away again. I know it sucks to look forward to a show so much and then be disappointed by it. CoCo back at ya!
I agree with whoever said it earlier in that this was the greatest show I've ever seen. Maybe it was because it my first time seeing the FLips live, maybe it was some due to...other....things, but I couldn't wipe a smile off my face the entire show. Made props to the Flaming Lips for making Friday one of the greatest nights I've ever experienced.

I remember buying a beer in the Brooer's tent and looking that way and being blinded. I am sure that I would have had a seizure if I actually watched that show. I have to close my eyes at some point during most shows due to strobes.
A Thieve's Parade 2/24 Conspirator 2/26 Kevin Smith 3/11 Keller 3/17 Papadosio 3/18 JJ Grey 3/25 Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer 3/26 Toubab Krewe 3/27 O'Death 4/11 Budos Band 4/22 EOTO 4/28 Summer Camp 5/6-29 All Good
Furthermore, I think it's silly to complain about the theatrics being similar when 99.9% of bands don't even attempt to put on a show like that.
I think this is the important point. I understand what's being said about the balloons and confetti being tired after so many years, but where else do you even have the opportunity to get bored with canons shooting confetti? It's not like I go to my 5th Grace Potter show in 6 months and sigh about how they used the red lights LAST time during "Oasis."
When I first saw the lineup, The Flips were the main act I was excited about because I heard how awesome they were in '07. I had seen them live at City Stages in Birmingham, and to be honest both myself and my friends agreed that it was a better show. It was MUCH smaller, so the crowd seemed much more energetic. There were also teletubbies involved, and Wayne didn't seem quite so bent on controlling the audience.
I thought it was AWESOME that they decided to play Dark Side, but I do think that unless they happen to play at a fest or something, that will probably be my last Flips show. Wayne just seemed a little tired and washed up, (but still overly cocky and presumptious, saying that they "brought a whole new meaning" to Dark Side...) and they seemed especially gimicky. They've become a bit of a parody of themselves, really. It was awesome at first, but the same act over and over DOES get kind of old.
I can't complain too much though, it was still a really colorful, pretty show. It just would have been a lot easier for me not to be falling asleep during it if I had been hanging out with Lucy or found some mushrooms....

This show was just fine! I have seen FLIPS countless times since way back when, and I hadn't seen them play anything from Embryonic since it came out - so I was looking forward to it SO much! Their show was classic FLIPS, yes - but different still!!! Classic comes in with their vibe and atmosphere - super positive, colorful and a fun quacking party from beginning to end. I was very excited because this show was somewhat different - different visuals, different set list (first show I've seen in quite a while where they started with a different song) ~ I can say I am very satisfied. I can't complain about them not playing as much older stuff since I've seen it all many times - and I was REALLY looking forewrd to their new stuff, which was amazing live imo. It's still the largest party ever if you ask me! At least for those of you who weren't into it, you had Black Keys, Chromeo + Hall and some other things to do! I will stick to my way of never missing a FLIPS show when I'm near one. Amazing!!!

I walked away from this show.
I'm done with this band.
I wanted music. Not Wayne talking/confetti flying in the air. I've stuck it out the last couple of times I've seen them but I just couldn't do it this time.
I found what I was looking for in The Black Keys/Galactic.
Also, the amount of spun idiot noobs that were at the show was unbelievable and really killed the vibe.

Geez, sorry the 'spun idiot noobs' ruined the [awesome] vibes you were bringing. If I felt like I had to 'stick it out' twice with a band I wouldn't go see them a third time. Sure, Wayne talked a lot and was preachy but the show was great; maybe I was just adequately spun though. I'm kind of surprised people are complaining that it was redundant ... it's not like they did DSOTM in 07.
funny story: my friends showed up after bassnectar ended and they were riding that dancey rave wave and got shushed while telling me about how awesome bassnectar was. First time i've ever been shushed at a rock show.

thank you.
and yeah wayne was preachy, so what? with all your power, what would you do? he put on a spectacle of lights and music for me and many others, he can talk for as long as he sees fit. ill listen to a man who can gather 40000 people in a field and with all that attention, he plays dark side of the moon.
as the audience was (begrudgingly) dispersing from the stage i heard someone say "this is a Bonnaroo travesty" referring to them not coming out for an encore. seriously? you just watched an iconic album performed by one of the greatest bands in recent history at one of the largest music festivals in the world. the real travesty is that you couldn't appreciate it for what it was.

don't like the show, don't go to it. personally, i still LOVE the confetti, the balloons, the hamster ball, the preaching, the drawn-out sing-alongs, and everything else
