I don't think its gonna be that bad. I lived through the last 17 year swarm in PA several years ago... I'm sure TN could be different, and they were definitely sorta ick, but they were clustered around trees and I sort of ceased to even see or hear them after a while. I would guess that the lack of trees (for the most part) will help. I think they emerge sooner if the ground warms up sooner, so that's another reason to hope for an early spring!
Now stinkbugs on the other hand...THAT'S something to be bothered by!

Ugh, it's like every time I see this thread it's a little reminder that I might end up spending Bonnaroo curled up in the fetal position in the car trying to bribe people to bring me samosas so I don't die of starvation.
I'll manage to forget about it for a bit and get all excited and then I see this thread and BAM! Cicada nightmares, RETURN!

MMMM, samosas......
The idea of this all these cicadas is grossing me out. I mean, I'll be at Roo.... but I may have giant buzzing cicadas all up in my tutu. I am NOT down with that. ...Oh well.

I worked at a summer camp about an hr north of Wilkes-Barre and had to deal with the things, and I thought I escaped them. After some time in Montreal, I've come to live with my parents in Jersey, and I'll be dammed if I don't get woken up every other night with a freaking stinkbug flying around me.
That said, I feel really bad for all those guys out in BFE. They're going to have it the worst if this is a serious cicadapocalypse, what with all the trees.
can you eat them? this might save me a few bucks over the weekends
Haha! I was thinking the same thing. I don't think you digest the wings though. My dog puked a lot of cicada wings back in '07. It was a miserable month.
I try to approach situations according to how I will reflect upon them in the future. With that said, if the cicadas are as bad as some of us fear, I guarantee that after the fact we will all look back at 'roo 11 as an esspecially epic event. No insect will ruin my time. I'm higher on the food chain!
Thanks for the link...early May emergence sounds promising, since they only live 30 days or so. No doubt we'll see stragglers but I'm betting we'll see more dead cicadas than live ones on the farm.

hahaha you should have seen the look on my 16 year old daughter and friend's faces (both going with me) when I told them about the cicadas today....priceless.
