EZ ups are definitely sweet and worth the investment. We still have our 29.99 cheapo canopy from target as well as our EZ up though. If you take care of your gear, you can get the same results for less money, though requires a touch more effort.
I'm surprised many of you are spending this much on tents for Roo to be honest.
This tent works well for the money, and considering you really can't stay in your tent past 7am, is worth exploring if you are looking for a tent that will hold up (there is a larger model if you need more room, still cheap relative). You aren't going to go backcountry backpacking with it because of weight, but with the tarp floor it'll keep standing water out and holds up well enough. And if it gets beat up or torn, you're not out a lot of cash.

Just my two cents.
^that's the one I plan on getting got solo-festing this year.

Yeah, I'm trying to curtail my spending when it comes to Roo equipment...I love camping but I might only go 2-3 times a year. But when I go to shop for camping stuff...I get verrryy distracted by all the cool nifty stuff and end up spending way too much.

Me and my roommate are going to our first roo this year and we're torn between getting one big tent to share or two smaller tents, either way we're also getting an ez up for shade. It's not so much the closeness of a shared tent that bothers us (We've been sleeping within 40ft of each other for 3yrs now) its the smell issue, hot & sweaty guy isn't exactly a B&B Works candle scent. Which do you guys prefer when going w/ multiple people?

This is really subjective. It depends on what you're looking for.
One big tent pros: Cheaper if everyone is pitching in for one more room for canopys at the campsite more airflow and head room
cons: more people in and out of tent / less privacy big and bulky (drive up camping use for the most part).
i was at target today and found a canopy for about $30 on clearance. i think it was kelty brand but could be way off. they don't have them online though.

if you go with a larger tent will give better air flow for sure. i would make sure you use an individual air mattress just so other peoples movement do not wake you. investing in a good battery operated fan and ear plugs will make it tolerable. grab the spot closest to the window put the fan on you and let the guys in middle deal with the body odor.
The first Roo we borrowed a 6-person dome tent from a friend and it was a perfect size for a queen sized air mattress, two adults, and our stuff.
Since then we have gotten our own tent and it's ginormous. Don't know the brand but has been fab at 2 Roos.
If you don't camp a lot, don't spend a lot on the tent, spend more on the EZ up. Any shelter that has those bendy tent-like poles may go a-flyin' if there's major wind. Better to have the straight metal poles that you can keep in place with a tent stake.

Although I have a larger tent, I bring my smallest one to 'Roo. I make it so half of it is under the EZ up for shade then I cover the back half with a reflective tarp to try and keep cool. This year I might bring my larger one if some friends are coming with me. Don't want to take up too much space though.

I used on of those $50 Ozark Trail tents from Walmart for three years and through two torrential downpours and it help up pretty well. I threw it away after the last Roo since it has seen it's better days. I'll probably upgrade this year, but it was good for the money.
I'm trying to keep an eye out for a cheap but reliable canopy. Target has a Coleman 10x10 for $140 (http://www.target.com/Coleman-Instant-Shelter-Grey-10x10/dp/B002YXRC4I/ref=nav_sc_rev_it_3_pn), but Walmart has a First Up 10x10 for $97 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/First-Up-10-x-10-Gazebo/8571900). I'm thinking they're both pretty equal in terms of durability, so go with the cheaper one.
I definitely need something that can hold up well in wind. I had a cheap screen room type canopy last summer and the poles bent easily when I went to a festival in NY and there were strong gusts of wind. Even took a while to rig my tent to keep it from falling over. Definitely making sure I use tie down tents/canopies from now on.
My first Roo was my worst Roo...as a noob I had no idea of the heat..we brought no shelter other then out tent and sat in out van most days at camp because we we sooooo HOT! Best advise I can give is get an EZ-Up..we got ours at Wally's and it has been the best investment yet...saved us every other Roo we have been to. Every year since we have been camped next to noobs and always share our ez-up/shade...it is better to sacrifice tent and get shade for a morning sleep then have a large tent and have no shade...by 7-8am the tent is sweltering..I mean sweating all your juices out HOT! (get a portable fan from Wally's since you work there..also good investment)...of all our Roo's 2009 has been the only Roo where we were limited on space(our neighbors had set up a 20X20 canopy and three tents and left us with 4X9 space..but they turned out to be good neighbors and we had a good time!) I cannot stress enough how much shade is worth...a 3x3 space of shade is worth its space in GOLD! ... either way you will have fun and if you cannot get an EZ-Up...bring a tarp and LOTS of rope! either way you will have fun..make new friends listen to INCREDIBLE music!..and if you are camped near me... I always have lots of coffee and accoutrement's in the morning!

cot suggestions... i like them better because they keep you off the ground (rain included) and you dont have to worry about an air mattress popping.
this is mine www.rei.com/product/765277 , i know its a little more expensive but roo is not my only fest of the summer and this year will be my 9th so the investment has paid off for me.
first timers wanting to trail something like this, try a tri fold sun chair. a few of my friends picked them up at cvs last year for like $20 and used their camping sleep pads/sleeping bags on them to sleep
I got a Eureka Tetragon 9 a couple years ago, and for one main reason - I can stand up in it. The tent is 10'x10', and 6' tall at the center. And while I'm only 5'2'', there is nothing more yuck than trying to change into clean undies and a new bikini top at 9am when you're already sweaty, and you cant stand up to do it. Ugh, it makes me feel gross just typing about it! Anyhow, Eureka also usually has a higher "bathtub" base than other tents - the tougher, more water resistant fabric at the bottom (the tetragon has a 1' bathtub). Also, the rain fly for Eureka's goes lower than the top of the bathtub base... You will find that a lot of tents have rainflys that stop at the top of the bathtub! So silly.
Regarding space - It really varies depending on who you're next to. Last year we kind of accidentally got crammed into a corner with a few people, but somehow we still had room for a tent behind the car, then a canopy, then another tent. THEN two more tents that got set up in the space our neighbors left bc they hiked to Tent Only. In previous years, we've had room for a 10'x10' canopy and a 10'x10' tent. And while the early morning set up is going on, it's pretty easy to meet neighbors.
