Okay so what about "The Apollo" Theatre. Could that have launched the career of someone who will be performing? Something to think about.
From wiki: Billing itself as a place "where stars are born and legends are made," the Apollo became famous for launching the careers of artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Diana Ross & The Supremes, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Jackson 5, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Ben E. King, Mariah Carey, The Isley Brothers, Lauryn Hill, and Sarah Vaughan.
I like where this would be going, but I think this is a little off target. This clue is a monster. I don't STS9 sounds plausible after reading some things on that space shuttle launch STS-9, but I really don't know.

Clue #1 i believe is a band called opiate: the audio and visual experience of tool...saw them a few nites ago at the valarium in knoxville, tn...there newest album is called "Watershed moment"...and opiates get you pretty "spacey" if you do 'roo the rite way... just sayin'.

So I've never really tried to solve these damn clues until tonight. At first I was on board with Bowie and then Elton John until I saw that Gary Chardonnay had eliminated their possibility. Then I was trying to ruminate on any other trips to space that ended badly and came up with Icarus which led me to Daedalus, but I can't link the rest. Next came exploring Apollo 13 and I ended up looking at James Horner's connection to any artists, and he also composed Titanic (water). I have now stabbed an ice pick through my left ear drum because I can't get that damned Celine quacking Dion song out of my head.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
As far as I know Ron Howard has never suffered any sort of demise
Ron Howard (director of Apollo 13) as a speckled lad was Opie. Opie's demise might be abbreviated OPD. This recalls all the Paul is dead rumors, most famously the OPD patch he wore on Sgt Peppers. Popular contention was it was the abbreviation for Officially Pronounced Dead, but it turned out to be a patch for the Ontario Police Department (or Ontario Provincial Police, mistaking the final "P" for a "D"). Ontario is home to one of the most famous watersheds in the world, Niagara Falls. Niagara was a French nightclub duo. now disbanded. One member of the group, Muriel Moreno, is still active.
Edit: More famously, Marilyn Monroe starred in the movie, "Niagara." Marilyn Manson???

Ron Howard directed the movie Apollo 13. He is a very speckled lad. I don't know how he could tie into music, but another thought with him is he is the narrator for Arrested Development...
Also, 1983, the year of the Challenger, could be the song 1983 by Neon Trees...
I am no good at this but Ron Howard seems to be something to think about it, doesn't it? That was a big movie for him.
If you're going for Ron Howard, you could go like 50 different ways. Arrested Development, while a great TV show, is leaping at shadows a bit, I think

WTF?
Don't know whether I thought that up before or after I started bleeding from the ears.

Okay - this thread is confuzzled/confuzzling, of course - so if this was mentioned, slap me.... ANYWAY - I see Edward Sharpe & Magnetic Zeros is a 'new guess'....Alex was in Ima Robot before this band, and they are going to be doing more Imarobot stuff now.... ?
From Wiki - > In 2010 the band announced the upcoming release of their new album, Another Man's Treasure, and released the song "Ruthless" on the Internet. They are now being represented by the Werewolf Heart label.[3]
'On January 6th 2011, The banded played six songs live on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic . This was the first time since Monument To The Masses tours that the new full banded played live. They added Orpheo McCord (of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Fool's Gold), Jason 'ComputerJay' Taylor, and Jonas Petri Megyessi.'
For some reason I thought of the movie Wall-E this morning. Isn't the movie about a Robot who gets left behind on Earth? Just thought this might prove useful. probably not though.
was at roo in 09 had to register on this site to tell you guys that the answer to this clue is EMPIRE OF THE SUN.
florence and the machine has the song about running, the bands that have songs about walking that come to mind are pantera and empire of the sun, so im choosing the latter due to them being alive and touring
im sure someone else can make the rest of it fit as i have not been following all the speculation but it seems like all the outer space stuff + the walk thing....that's my guess
also, in 09 phish covered highway to hell. this clearly means AC/DC is headlining rooX
i haven't read through all 51 pages of this clue, so it may have been brought up already.
as much as i hate to suggest it it, has anyone thought of the possibility of it being Kanye West?
kanye's glow in the dark tour theme was a trip through space "thwarted" and crashing i believe. "speckled" according to answers.com can mean "a mixed character; motley" and we all know how kanye had his demise. would it have been a watershed moment otherwise?
just throwing in my $.02
again i apologize if someone had already suggested, i just don't want to read every single post of this thread.
I think it mayyyy be Elton John (referring to the song Rocket Man)
A trip to space: Rocket Man travels into space Thwarted by a speckled man's demise: Rocket Man thwarted (to oppose and defeat the efforts, plans, or ambitions of) the mission because the mission is meaningless to him due to being separated from everything he loved. Speckled (motley in character) could also describes Elton John. A watershed moment otherwise: the watershed moment (a turning point or change is history) explains how the exploration of mars in the song would change history regardless, and also could make a play on the whole "water on mars theory."
Hmm, dunno, but we are 51 pages in and its worth a shot.

Elton John got guessed really early back in the Bowie days, so I think he got ruled out already.
Ahh thanks. I was going off of the list on melaniermarkham.com/rooclues/ to save the time it would take to sift through the whole thread, and didn't see him on there. I wish the Bowie days were over and lost, though. I wouldn't have minded hanging on to that small bit of hope, haha. Back to the crazy and convoluted hunt to make sense of this!

What about Phoenix? There is the NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander.... but I'm probably wrong because it was considered a successful mission. It was just a thought.

What about Ben Howard for the 1st clue... he has an album called These Waters and a song called Cloud 9. There is an accomplished aviator and aeronautical engineer by the same name, Ben Howard.
I need to go to class... anyone want to look into the aviator Ben Howard and see if you come up with anything.

riburroo, how quickly you fall off the right path....
My guess. Simplify it. We got Apollo 13. Who was in Apollo 13? Kevin Bacon. Gary Chardonnay just used the word Cast in a hint. So there are two options:
"You look like you're listening to every note." - Lady to me during LCD's "final" show 2023: Mar 29 - Guster Apr 6 - Postmodern Jukebox Apr 26 - Father John Misty May 14 - Taylor Swift (Philly) May 17 - Robert Plant and Alison Krauss July 12 - moe. July 16 - CAKE (Portland, ME) July 28-30 - Newport Folk (#12!) Dec 8-9 - Goosemas!

Gary Chardonnay tweeted that same thing about riburroo, and he also tweeted this: "There are no stones to throw with this hint. Look for a common cast."
I wonder if there's any way the common cast is the cast of a movie or tv show?
Gary Chardonnay tweeted Cast your guesses with care, Clue #1 & #3 are similar in element. #moreriddles #thisisfun
Hmmm... the word 'element' makes me think of wind, water, fire, etc. and all that good Captain Planet stuff... which in turn is making me rethink my earlier dismissal of Arcade Fire as a possibility, with its Laika connection.

Whoa. I was away for awhile and just read this. Where did I fall off the right path? Was it Opie? Or OPD? Or McCartney? Or Ontario? Or Niagara Falls? If I *fell* off the right path, is Niagara Falls the reference, or Ontario?
