So what is the secret to get an extra hour, 2 or 3? It killed me last year when I was up until around 5am on Friday and then couldn't get much sleep past 7am because it gets so HOT. I am considering getting a second canopy to place over the tent to block out the sun, and possibly a marine battery/fan to put in the tent. Anyone have any other secrets? It really would make a huge difference if I could just sleep until like 9.

I think your tarp idea the best way. Perhaps a silver or white tarp on the east side of the tent. Google camping fans for some good options, there is one you put ice in that looked promising. There are also tent ac units, but then you need the generator and others in tent will prob be less than pleased.
Or do what I did and get a sweet deal on an 80's Motorhome. AC blows cold son, COLD

you will definitely sleep longer if you sleep under an EZ up with a tarp blocking the rising sun. Tents heat up so quickly. A battery powered fan will help some though. And if you like the privacy of a tent, just figure some way to get it on the west side of your canopy and still use the tarp as an east wall of the canopy to block the rising sun.
Drink heavily! And yes shade and a large fan will help as well. Also, if you have loud and annoying neighbors at your campsite, Centeroo is actually more peaceful after 4 (if they get rid of that stupid Lunar stage). took me years to learn all that, and now i sleep like a baby
Lots of talk of use of deep cycle batteries and car batteries with converters for full size fans and even small A/C units. They seem to know what's up.
EZ-up Tent Cot Battery powered fan. And not one of those pansies from Walfart. You need a big mother that take like 13 size D batteries ;D And a ceiling fan. Hangs from the top of your tent with magnets.
My first year camped in the 007 area my crew spent the day from 2pm until the latenights in Centeroo. I learned that it is totally possible to nap in Centeroo that year and the importance of usin' what available time you have to rest up as much as possible. Also the tarp shadin' your tent idea works. We had a decent set-up fer this back in '08 until the Friday night rainstorm.

This will be my 6th year and I've tried everything..... No matter how late I go to sleep, I am up around 7. I try to nap at some point later in the day if I can.

I figured out after four years that tarps, fans, connopies, and sheets tied to canopies all do help. But still I have huge problems sleeping at Roo at its my biggest downfall there. But something that has helped me a few times was a Xanax and going to the theatre and crashing in the AC. But I'm sure the best route is an RV which is why I'm trying really hard to make that happen this year. Good luck and sweet dreams!

As soon as you start to wake up (in a tent) get out and under a canopy. Don't try to roll over and fall back asleep in the heat of the tent. It won't work... for long. I don't get much extra sleep this way. Probably just an hour. But every little bit helps.

Xanax is a must for me at Roo. At least gives me some extra sleep.

I'm all about hanging the sheets as walls on my EZ up. They block the sun and provide circulation if there is a breeze a blowin. But ultimately I still find myself waking up early. . . I swear that Bonnaroo air has caffeine in it!
One thing to keep in mind. . . the BEST time to use the port o johns is in the early morning before the heat kicks in.
The EZ up and tarp blocking out the rising sun really is key and the most impotant part of keeping cool. EZ up's dont do Leno in the morning when the sun is rising and beaming down straight into the side of your tent, hence where the tarp comes into play. I had this along with 2 big battery powered fans in my tent and I can honestly say I was comfortable the entire time, and was able to sleep till 11am every morning. Meanwhile, my neighbors had only a tent, no ez up or anything, and were sprawled out in the grass outside their tent by 8:30am every morning hating their lives.
What do you guys use to attach your sheets/tarps to your EZ ups?
Last year I went to Dollar Tree and bought some shower curtains and shower curtain hooks and just hung them up. Worked pretty good, and it was easy to move around.
I slept pretty well the past two times at Bonnaroo.
1. Tall tent. Tall is more important than wide for morning airflow 2. Take off the rainfly, unzip the windows and doors 3. EZ Up or some shelter at least a foot above your tent 4. A tarp on the east side, angled out so you still have fantastic airflow. Best if it doesn't go to the ground, like a foot off the ground for really good airflow. Can attach with bungee cords 5. Tent fans - we only have two rinky-dink ones but we put them right on our face 6. Be super hydrated. May have to get up to pee, but you won't wake with a splitting headache or cotton mouth. Also being hydrated makes you feel cooler.
BTW last year we went with a couple who brought a generator. They tucked it between two of our cars and had the cords go across our site into their tent where they had a laptop, fans, some sort of air conditioning unit, the ability to charge phones, etc.
I thought it sort of sucked. First the noise is a PITA to anyone near it (like another couple in our posse). Second, are you REALLY going to be at camp long enough to justify the price and trouble? I think you would be more likely to spend too much time at camp with really nice amenities. Third - everyone around you will be annoyed and that's not the Roo way.
The best way to miss sleep is to stress out about missing sleep. The only Bonnaroo sleep strategy I've found to work for me is this: crash when you have to; wake up when you must.

Five year roo vet. When the heat wakes me up in the morning, I immediately crawl out of my tent and lay a sheet or blanket down on the grass beneath my EZ-Up. I also attach a sheet to the EZ-Up to block the sun. This way you get some breeze. A battery operated fan also doesn't hurt. Just bring extra batteries. Despite my methodology, I'm still beat down by Sunday, seeing as how I normally don't go to bed until after 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. If you don't feel like a zombie at 'roo by Sunday, you likely aren't doing something right

Ehhh.... it ain't nothing a few nerve pills can't handle. But be prepared... when you wake up at noon because you almost drowned in a pool of your own sweat, you could be pretty irritable. I am anyway until I get my morning dose of ______.

Exactly. I find it helpful to take Monday and Tuesday of the next week off work and not do anything but sleep.

Hint - buy up to VIP... take a warm shower before bed to clean off and relax.... sleep under an EZup canopy and wear earplugs - a must to eliminate external noise. Finally, battery powered fans to keep the air moving. We sleep in till 9-10 a.m. until the smell of bacon 'n eggs wake us up. Also, a mid afternoon (cool) shower and nap are a must (especially if you are in your 50's, like us!) See you there.

Use an ez up, fans and silver sided tarps like others have talked about. Also don't forget the earplugs and sleep mask to block out as much noise and light as you can. You can attach the tarps with bungee cords, tarp clips and zip ties. You can find the cords and clips right with the tarps in the camping section of whatever store you go to, and the zip ties are normally with tools or automotive. Just bring a pair of scissors to cut the zip ties if you use them! I do these things and sleep till 9 or 10 every morning.
