you know whats funny is about 3 months ago i was repulsed by the idea of U2 at bonnaroo. about a month ago i came to terms with it happening and realized they had a good songs and it would be a pretty good show. over the last couple weeks ive been watching Live at Slane Castle and i am now really excited for U2 at bonnaroo. so much so that i think i would actually be bummed if they werent there
I can't imagine myself driving 15 hours and spending over $1000 for the weekend and than sleeping through the Saturday headliner, I don't care who is playing.
But a lot of us feel this way about the late night acts, and sometimes I need sleep before late night or I just won't make it.

Yep, and sleeping during the headliner means missing only 1 band instead of 6.
Yea but even if some of us accept them....they will still be this year's Metallica or Kings of Leon - the headliner that gets a lot of flack for their spot
but I wouldn't mind sitting back in the field of the What stage watching U2. I just would rather see Neil or someone else.

for the most part i just chill back in the crowd for the headliners and take it easy.
in my 3 years the only headliners i got close for where Stevie/Jay-Z and then DMB(and that was because we were able to walk in to the pit just before the show).
If U2 was there I would most likely try to get close. From all I heard they put on amazing shows and also I grew up with them, and there older catalog is simply amazing.

Very true. However, last year, there was only one headliner that I had absolutely zero interest in catching (KOL), and I'm very glad I didn't catch a nap during that. Otherwise, I'd have missed out on Bakerton Group tearing the Troo Music Lounge to shreds, the incredibly strange Children's Hospital thing, and bits of a pretty cool Dawes set.
Plus, if U2 is the least interesting headliner to me this year... then damn, we've got some great headliners, haha!

While I'm not thrilled about hearing their modern tunes, they have plenty of great songs to choose from. They are touted as great performers and I think its a great get for Bonnaroo, regardless of how most of us feel about them. Sure Bono is lame, but there are plenty of great artists who make quality music that aren't very likable. I doubt I will be there for the whole set, but I will definitely willfully check out a lot of it, and expect good things.

Something that's important to note when it comes to any band playing, especially U2, I think, is that it all depends on the attitude that the band brings to the stage. Regardless of what "U2" means to anyone, be it their stuff from the 80s or 00s, it's all about performance and respect for the festival. I remember people talking about how amazing the Police were live, and influential, etc. But they were hands down the most boring show I've ever seen at Roo. I laid down and went to sleep in the middle of the crowd. But they seemed bored to be there. Maybe it had something to do with them fighting backstage. I felt the same way about the Beastie Boys when they played. Like it was just another show (even though, well, it is). But then you have people who seem overwhelmingly appreciative to be there, like the jam bands usually are, Radiohead was, and Bruce seemed to be. And that's what makes the show to me. And from what I can tell, U2 makes every show feel like the only show in the world, so that earns my ticket.
Also, people should check out their live album Rattle and Hum. I'm not a huge fan of these guys, but it's a pretty good album.

^^^^ great post themanflounders........that's what's really important. Metallica were criticized for being on the lineup by many people but they put on a great show, played to the crowd, kept yelling about Bonnaroo and just seemed like they were having a great time. They also had guys sit in with other acts too.
Metallica won people over. Police did not.
U2 could. Which is why I'm okay with them coming. A year or two ago I maybe would have been pissed but if they are a headliner now.....I don't mind.

I was honestly just about to come in here and say the exact opposite about U2. I don't think that they would be overwhelmingly appreciative or humbled. I'm not saying they don't put on a great show, but I really think they take themselves a little too seriously to act that way.
To be honest...I don't know. Not the greatest defense for my side of the argument, is it? It's probably my preconceived notions about them, unfortunately. If I wasn't so stubborn and actually saw a show, maybe I'd be proven wrong.

Yea I understand what you're saying. I had some negative preconceived notions about U2 for a long time because I would just get annoyed by that Vertigo song and was never really a fan so I just slowly started disliking them. With no real reason. I disliked Bono for being all over the place and stuff but never really had any real reason for disliking him.
I've come to tolerate U2 though.....mainly because I don't constantly hear their new single everywhere I turn. I'm not a huge fan but recognize that they've got to be doing something right to be as big as they are. The Edge was pretty interesting in "It Might Get Loud" even though he was the least interesting of the three (though with Jack White and Jimmy Page it's tough).

I've never really understood some of the U2 hate. I can understand not liking a band because you think their song writing skills suck, but a lot of people today don't appear to like Bono simply for the fact he spends time promoting high-profile charitable causes around the world. (I'm not pointing fingers at anyone on this board, trust me). I'm dating myself here, but when I was growing up in the 80s, I got into things like Amnesty International, Greenpeace and anti-apartheid efforts mainly because I learned about them while listening to U2. Some of their songs prompted me to look into things going on far away from Ohio. Granted, in the mid 90s, I abandoned U2 for Pavement, Phish, etc. but although I no longer buy their albums, I still have a lot of respect for them, both as musicians (Especially Edge) and as people, and I'd love to see them at Bonnaroo. I'm sure they'd research the festival and it's rich history and pour a ton of energy into their performance if they do, indeed, appear on the bill. And if they do, which I'm beginning to expect, I anticipate the news will be met by a sizable backlash in some 'roo quarters. However, that's nothing new. Although I'm a new poster on here, I've read on here in years past people question Metallica's inclusion, the Kings of Leon's inclusion, Widespread's inclusion. There always seems to be at least one band or artist (Bo Bice, anyone) people are up in arms about. My guess is next year people, possibly myself included, will be complaining about another rumored or confirmed headliner. It's par for the course when you have a festival people take ownership in and feel passionately about.

When U2 first came on the scene they were pretty controversial in some circles because most of their music was very political, although it was European politics it still was enough to provoke some controversy here. It was also pretty good music and at the time I was a big fan. Later on they embraced a much more pop oriented style and their tours became the huge extravaganzas which to me seemed to be so much at odds with how they started that I was totally turned off, to the point where I really couldn't care less about seeing them at Bonnaroo. Funny thing though......when this story broke I started thinking about it a little more, went back and listened to some of their early stuff and I'm kind of warming up to the idea.
This is truly an iconic band, their range of music has, through the years, earned them millions of fans and in return they've tried to provide something for everyone. While it might not be everyone's dream performance there's no doubt that it would fit at Bonnaroo. Kind of like KOL, there's some good music behind the top 40 stuff that makes me want to rip my ears off.

I'll be honest, I don't really like U2. I really despise Bono, as do many other people. I really don't care for almost any of their music at all, and I probably wouldn't see them if they played at Bonnaroo. However, I really have grown to accept the fact that they will potentially be there. Honestly, they're much more tolerable than KoL, and it's just a few hours out of an entire weekend of music. I'm far more pissed that I have to miss Thursday night for my qualifying exams to stay in Grad School. I just found out the second (of 2) is at 8am on that Friday. Hopefully that'll make the whole weekend that much better, though.
Just to throw my 2 cents in, I am excited about the possibility of having U2. I saw them, front row, on the Elevation Tour in 2001. It is still one of the best shows I have ever seen and I think they will still be great after 10 years. I will never forget hearing Bad that night, just awesome. I think many people on the fence will come away impressed.
