Green Day still holds a place in my musical heart. However, I wouldn't want to see them on the farm. If they are there, yeah, I'll check em out for a bit, but green day isn't what comes to mind when i think roo.

I wouldn't mind Green Day. means I can get closer to the stage for the other sets on. Don't hate them, just don't need to see grown men who decided at 35 to start wearing eyeliner....
Funny how it's okay for Robert Smith, Trent Reznor, and David Bowie to wear eyeliner.
Well they didn't start at 35 like Billy Joel, it's easier to forgive an attached habit and look. But personally as much as I like the cure it gets a little sadder every year to see it. I remember an interview from 2004 where he said he was going to stop soon b/c he'll look silly but I haven't seen him stop. David Bowie's bi so it'll blend well with his aging queen features. And Trent? Well he needs something to make him seem rocknroll still after he quit all the drugs and has aged a lot.
Saw them my sophomore year of high school. Went cause Jimmy Eat World was opening (and was bummed when they only had a 30 minute set). Green Day were terrible. Might as well be called the Billie Joe Armstrong Show. (I can deal with Bono, since U2 actually make good music and are great live)

I saw Green Day open for the Flaming Lips in 1993 (I think.) Tiny club, RIP, the Academy NYC
It was PACKED, I didn't really know who Green Day was at all yet, but the place went crazy! And then, all of a sudden cleared out when the Lips went on and suddenly started screeching ...I specifically remember all the animated hands over ears exits
My God that was a GREAT show! On the RAIL ;D
(*edit - well, you know there was no actual rail, more like leaning on the stage, and then backing up a little later on to dance my arse off freely LIPHEAD FOREVER!!! ;D ;D )

lol. they're consistently good live. that is a fact. you can bash their music for whatever reason you can justify if you feel you must, but saying they are "terrible" in regards to their live show? how so? 99% of the time they sound spot on so you can't mean terrible in that aspect. and their live tactics are much of the same that have been used since the dawn of arena rock (which they do very well). so you can't hate on their performance. if you're not into their music that's cool, but you gotta give credit where credit is due.
and on the subject of u2 being all superior or whatever you were getting at... they seem to be fine with green day. and crap.

"I mean, Led Zeppelin didn't write tunes everybody liked. They left that to the Bee Gees." "this whole situation has just turned his whole life upside down face."

Trent won an Oscar. David Bowie is David Bowie and Robert Smith has always looked like that.
Thanks to local radio, Green Day became really annoying at no fault of the eyeliner.

You're trying to balance saying Green Day is terrible by saying Jimmy Eat World is good? ???
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
I don't understand the people who are saying they are amazing live. I took my ex-girlfriend to see them for her birthday a few years ago and I thought their show was really annoying. At one point Billie Joe Armstrong came out to the front of the stage and pretended (hopefully) to stick his hands down his pants and masturbate for a full minute in the middle of a song. Not what I'm trying to see at Bonnaroo.

It's okay if you don't like Green Day, I was just pointing out how silly it is to point out wearing eyeliner as the reason they "don't belong" at Bonnaroo.
The essence of Bonnaroo, or what it has become rather, is that there is something for EVERYONE. Having a hugely popular band like Green Day would please a lot of people. There are few headliners that everyone is going to enjoy, if any. Chill the fuck out.
For the record, I think the arena rock cliches that litter Green Day sets are ridiculous and stupid and forced, but I'm willing to sit through them because I like the songs. And hey, nothing wrong with a little spectacle now and then. Bruce Springsteen does this shit and people cream their pants and call him a great performer.
All in all, sorry if you have to resort to cheap shots in a thread about a band you don't like. I hope you find something better to do with your time.
Everyone always uses this "something for everyone" defense when they want some random act like Green Day or Weird Al to play Bonnaroo. So where should the line be drawn if it's not Leno-y recycled arena rock like Green Day? How about we get Taylor Swift? Miley Cyrus? How about Britney Spears? or Adam Lambert?
or, of course,
edit: also, in response to the post above me, like many have said already in this thread, a lot of people on this board can't stand Green Day, and their opinion would not change one bit if they stopped wearing eyeliner...
