I wish I could say you have a valid point, but you don't have a valid point. He makes amateur wobble music that rave chasers think is actually worth something. I'm not trying to rain on your Skrillex infatuation, I am just stating the obvious. He's a young, talentless kid that the industry is getting behind because they think that this Dub Step trend is the next big thing that will make them tons of money. So they will book him at every festival throughout the next year or so and kids who never really heard this type of music before will think he's the most amazing thing. But he won't have any weight and this type of music will be looked at the same way the sh!tty rap/rock trend from the late 90's is looked at today. Skrillex is the Limp Biscut of Dub Step. There are some pretty great dub step artists out there, I heard plenty of them at Burning Man. Unfortunately for you guys, Skrillex is not one of them.

I accept that he's a shitty DJ, but, while its a matter of opinion, my argument is that his music production is amazing. His songs are fun. Now I love dubstep, but the problem with it in a live setting it it's not really the most 'dancey' music. But damn, if that wobble bass isn't awesome. What Skrillex did is take house and dirty electro and mix it with the wobble bass of dubstep we all love. Now he's not the first one to do this, but he is arguably the most successful at it. It sounds fucking fantastic. All I know is this music makes me want to go crazy, dance, and party like nothing else, and I can't get enough of it. And, based on his ridiculously fast rise in popularity, I think alot of other people agree with me.

I can't fault you for any music that you enjoy/makes you enjoy yourself. That would be Leno-y. All I'm saying is that I personally do not enjoy his music. Some of it may be fun, but I have absolutely no respect for him and I just can't get into a musician I have zero respect for. I make electronic music, it is NOT hard to make the music that Skrillex makes. Those bass sounds are so easy to get just by watching a youtube tutorial, and it's just been done before. Not to mention the fact that he is CLEARLY just riding trends. He was in a majorly successful screamo band back when that stuff was "cool" and now that dubstep has become "cool," he emerges out of nowhere with an EP with extremely clean production (seemingly not by him judging by the vast difference in quality between his live transitions and transitions on album).
And his ridiculously fast rise in popularity has less to do with a lot of people loving him and more to do with the fact that he has very good connections in the music business and a label with a large amount of influence that can pretty much get him booked at any major festival/venue that he wants.
If he makes people happy, then cool, let him play and I hope you guys have a great time. I just hope he would only get a Lunar Stage set.

Ok, I can definitely agree that his live set needs work. But also remember that this is the first year that he has ever played electronic music live. If I were him I'd be a little scared to completely do everything live myself too. The fact of the matter is, no matter how un-talented he is live, people like his music. His latest EP LITERALLY held all 10 top spots with different tracks on beatport at one point. And as far as him having a huge label behind him I'm pretty sure he's part of mau5trap records, they are definitely not huge, its not like he's with Ultra Records. Or maybe I'm wrong and mau5trap does equal Ultra.
Really awesome electronic music, at that. I just listened to "The Method", that track was dope dude. Really chill and well-layered. Loved it, actually. Keep doing what you're doing man.

Well, mau5trap does have pretty good connects, but I was referring to the fact that Sonny still has relationships with Atlantic and Sony. He knows people. He's not ON those labels currently, which I realize I mistakenly said, but he still knows some high-ups in the biz.
And in response to it being his first year, thats why I'm saying I don't respect him. Instead of working the smaller venues and working on/perfecting his live show like most electronic musicians/DJs do, he decided he was gonna go right for the MAJOR festival circuit when his live show is no where near ready to do so. He's really not the worst, he could have some potential if he would experiment more instead of just working inside the box and following the formula that has proven successful for OTHER acts like Bassnectar, and hone his live skills. He's just trying to rush into the dubstep scene before it starts to fade out of popularity, which will gain him some mainstream success due to his large amount of resources, but will not gain him the respect of his contemporaries.

Thanks alot man I've only been doing it for about 2 years and am just starting to play some shows around Philly and NY so it's always good to hear some positive feedback.
And I'm just curious. I see you are going to see Girl Talk tonight. Do you not have the same thoughts on his live set vs skrillex's?
Nah. I don't know if you've ever actually seen what Greg Gillis is doing on his laptop, but if you haven't, I highly recommend you watch "Rip! A Remix Manifesto," it's available to view online for free, and at one point, you get a pretty good look at his laptop screen during a live show. It's not just a mixer, or an iTunes window, it's him starting off with a small group of chained together samples and he throws more and more into the mix from banks on the side. I know some people think that you can just throw two songs together and beatmatch them and then you have a mix that sounds as good as one that Girl Talk does, but it's not that easy. You have to have extreme knowledge of your sample bank (he uses anywhere from 300-600 different samples per show) and knowing which songs work together, and it's especially impressive cause he rarely plays the same mixes twice. He does all of this on the fly while doing the job of hyping up the crowd at the same time, with hundreds of people on stage with him distracting him.
Not to mention the doc gives you a good look at Gillis working on a track in his hotel room, and he shows a pretty good understanding of music theory.
do not want him at all. Everyone thinks he's something amazing because hes on Deadmau5 label and obviously deadmau5 is god (sarcasm).
All he plays is the same electro house that half the other djs in the world play. Then he decideds to throw in some crappy dubstep because people think any sort of dub is nuts. Throwing in a huge wobble for the sake of throwing in a wobble doesn't make you good, it makes you a fraud.
He tried to create 10 different types of sounds/genre in one song and it sounds like Leno. His stuff is all over the place.
theres nothing new or progressive or interesting about his music. The only thing hes done is take electro, house, and dubstep and throw it together. There are so many other worth while acts for bonnaroo to sign, i really hope they don't waste a spot on him
Hes a hipster kid who thought he was cool by making electronic music and got by because of deadmau5s shadow.

I just mentioned that they bag on this guy a lot on the Coachella message boards and that it was a pretty funny thread. Next thing you know people are bagging on him here. This thread is way kind compared to the Coach board even with this amount of hate. I'm not super impressed but he looks about like a lot of DJs out there. Push play and dig your own groove.
Skrillex is a talented producer but pretty boring live. If there's going to be a wobble act booked, I'd much rather have Bassnectar back.
Skrillex =/= Bassnectar.
And there is going to be wayyyy more than A wobble act booked.
You're right... I'm just saying that if there's going to be wobble at all (which there will be), Bassnectar should be there (amongst others). And for the record, I'm not a Skrillex hater, but his live shows seem to be lacking.

Anyone is entitled to like whatever they want to like, music is about what moves you. But one thing that needs to be realized when discussing a hack like Skrillex is that it makes you sound like you don't really know that much about Dub Step or dance music in general. It's not your fault, you probably haven't been exposed to enough EDM to realize that what Skrillex makes is pure garbage and that he is everything that is wrong with where dance music in the mainstream is going.
You all really need to take a step back and realize that this guy is terrible. Please do yourself a favor and don't fall for the trend. If you have any real taste in dance music or dub step or any common knowledge at all you will realize that Skrillex is like the Nickleback of this genre.

To each their own. I personally have no issue with Skrillex, or any artist for that matter, playing at any festival. There's obviously a fair number of people who like his music. Who is anyone to judge them?

Jesus christ... I get the hate for his live show if it bothers you he's an amateur DJ, but I really don't get the hate for his music in general and his production. What about it don't you like? And is this just a matter of taste? I mean, what else do you listen to that's so much better?
hate on his live skills all you want but if he plays bonnaroo (and he most likely is) when he drops this track i am going to nut all over the poor soul in front of me
hate on him all you want, but he is popular and is playing all the festivals this year because, PEOPLE LIKE HIS MUSIC. he didnt completely rape beatport with his latest EP because of his "connections". he is one of the only artists to introduce dubstep, electro, etc and mix electronic genres. you could tell me that when he plays bonnaroo all he is gonna do is hit play on i-tunes and I will still be raging my ass off because I like the music. I dont really care how many times he adjusts his EQ's or transitions tracks.

hopefully his mac doesnt crash before the show or hell have to cancel
hopefully hes not on the lineup, there are a million better electronic acts out there (and i dont mean bassnectar and Deadmau5)
This is the one place Bonnaroo consistently lacks any real ear for talent and just picks up whos riding the biggest buzz, or who was all the rage in 93. not going to claim im some super electro head but i do know there are some incredible acts out there that arent being booked by Bonnaroo year after year.

Default Re: I never realized how horrible Skrillex was until now
*press play* *light cigarette* *make sure EQs aren't accidentally turned down* *move hair out of glasses* *talk to hipster friends* *check EQs again* *make hand movements to the crowd* *triple check EQ knobs* *adjust alcoholic beverage* *dance with hipster friends* *move hair out of face* *more hand movements* *yell in mic* *drink, smoke* *repeat above steps 3 times* *RANDOMLY TRANSITION TO A TRACK THAT IS ALREADY HALF WAY PLAYED WITH NO MIXING WHATSOEVER* *randomly cut power, music stops* *CROWD GOES INSANE!!!!!*
THIS IS THE GREATNESS THAT IS SKRILLEX
^ ripped from the chella boards just cause itz perfect.
if this stuff makes you nut you really need therapy.
Saw him in Austin this past Saturday night (well heard him, never actually saw him was too far back). Had a quacking blast. Don't give a quack if it's just a radio playing his music, it was really fun and I would see him again at Roo.
The attitude that causes this problem of people like Skrillex blowing the fuck up. Theres a million and one people who can get a music production program and do such generic shit with it, the only difference between them and the likes of Skrillex is that they dont know anyone in the business to get them booked.
Theres so many small time DJ's just trying to get by on making REAL MUSIC and its a travesty that any hack with Ableton Live and a friend in the business can start playing festivals at the drop of a hat.
like really? you dont care if he just presses play on his laptop? thats soo beat, why even go? why not just invite over all your friends and bump his CD?
