i was in this same situation a couple years ago. i started out with Tales from the Punchbowl, and i always thought it was meh and didnt bother with Primus for another year or so. this was until my guitar teacher recommended frizzle fry, which i insanely fell in love with right away. after that i worked my way from there (sailing the seas of cheese, pork soda, etc) until their newest material. hope that helps

They're definitely hard to get into at first. They're definitely the oddest band to ever play MTV's Spring Break (in 1993).
Like gibson said, Frizzle Fry is a classic. Sailing the Seas of Cheese is amazing too. I have mixed feelings on Pork Soda and Punchbowl, but The Brown Album is great. Stay away from Antipop though.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

primus is one of those bands where i can see how it is hard to get into them just through old school you tube videos if you didnt get into them in the 90's. the (seemingly forced) absurdity that shaped his music surpassed his primary ability as a bass player, IMO... since maturing as an artist and a person I think his old songs have finally filled themselves out. like before they were just quirky bass riffs turned into full length songs, dusted with goofy lyrics, but it still had enough energy to chime enough with your average white high school kid to justify dancing.
I was never into them, but I've always had respect for Les Claypool as a bassist. Then I saw them this summer at Vibes and got my face torn off and then handed back to me. Downloaded a few albums and liked some, but not others. I guess it's really that they are more of a live band than studio. Some of it has to do with the fact that Les' bass tones on some of the earlier albums are just awful, and thats all I can hear.

hahahah when I saw Primus this summer everyone was yelling "PRIMUS SUCKS!" and I didn't get it. I was so confused as to why so many people deep in the Primus crowd hated them when there wasn't another band on after them.

troo's right: Primus is a great stereo listen (The entire band is tight, but especially Les), but they are an even better live act. The energy going back and forth between the crowd and the band is something to experience in person.

I'll second Frizzle Fry as a good album to start on. If you can get their Bonnaroo set from 2004, it's a good listen too.
Primus, for some, is an acquired taste. Les is a unique fella and it shows in the music he creates. For me, I really dig the way his bass and the percussion meld into a rhythmic progression of badassness, but it's not all about the bass n' drums, as Ler also has a style all his own.
When they announced Jay Lane would be taking over duties on drums last tour, I was a bit upset (I'm a Tim fan, what can I say?). After seeing Jay tear it up at the Ryman show, those misguided emotions have disappeared.

according to their website, they will be playing on Friday. hopefully late night.
Saw them (rather, heard them from my campsite)in '04, and have seen many incarnations of Les throughout the years at roo, but super excited for Primus.

if your just getting into primus, just get the greatest hits, or stsoc, since half of that album is on the greatest hits. also primus sucks. this is definitely in my top 3 this year, missed les last year for... jeff beck? I cant remember, but I will not miss this for anything minus a superjam of some sort

I think I'm the only one on the board that could listen to every Primus album without skipping. Their live show has been my "White Whale" and escaped me for years.
