Don't worry, nod, it won't rub off on you. Besides, even if it did, the only people who would care are the ones who think music is about image.
I'm not worried about it, MMJ brings a different crowd than a Phish or Furthur show anyway, I just don't like them in that list because I think "jam band" is more of a scene than a description of the music. And the scene surrounding jam bands is something I dislike.
Not to say there aren't extremely nice people who go to Phish shows who aren't complete wastes of space, but that band does bring out more of that crowd.
have you ever been to an actual phish show not at 'roo? yeah there is some sketch, but not nearly as much as you make it seem. there are plenty of accomplished, mature people at their shows. it's all about what you make it!
^^^^ Glad I never achieved my goal of being a card-carrying hippie. I got misdirected in the 70's and if I could only remember them I would know where I went right. That was a close one!
Fyi, the term "jam" originates from jazz. So those bands you mentioned are even more of a jam band because they play jazz. If everyones criteria for a jam band was as strict as yours, there would be no such thing as a jam band.

With your criteria, Eric Clapton and Santana (soon to be headliners) are a Jam band.
People have a tough time distinguishing between the notion of a "jam" or someone "jamming" (i.e. the act of a musician playing something that's improv, or of musicians sitting in together for sometimes unrehearsed sessions) and a "jamband," which clearly refers to a specific subset of groups that make such improv and free-form exploration the focus of the music.
That's further complicated by the aforementioned faux-hippies, trustafarians, and wookies, who tend to adopt anything that they see as "crunchy" as part of the accepted "jamband" scene. 15 year ago Primus was clearly an alternative rock band, but as soon as Les Claypool struck up a friendship with Trey Anastasio they became a jamband. Bands like Yonder Mountain String Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Leftover Salmon and the like are rooted in bluegrass, yet their appearance among traditional jambands like moe., Widespread, etc. at various festivals and tours has pushed them in that direction. Medeski Martin & Wood is a f*cking jazz fusion trio, but as soon as Trey showed up to jam with them in Austin in 1995, hairfarmers everywhere were soon invading MMW club shows, refusing to sit down and shouting out "WOOOO" at random times of the set, ruining it for everyone else. Bela Fleck & the Flecktones are also technically a jazz-fusion act, but again, idiots. Dave Matthews Band hasn't been a jamband since about 1993 when they were adding weird freeform jazz jams onto the end of "Jimi Thing" and playing small clubs. Hell, even bands like STS9, the New Deal, and Disco Biscuits are closer to electronica than rock/jam music (especially STS9 and the New Deal), but they get lumped in the same.
Translation: hippies ruin everything.
Guess you can't grasp the concept that "jamband" is not a genre of music. But go ahead and flame on with your anti-hippie campaign.
News Flash: This festival, this website, this discussion would not exist without hippies. Next time you go to a MMJ concert, hug one (I'm sure there are plenty around)
There is no definition of jam band. You are trying toohard to fit music into a category. Jam band is not a genre of music. Just because a band plays a certain type of music doesnt mean they arent a jam band. Any band that takes part in the act of jamming can be called a jam band. But i understand your reasoning in saying that jam band isa genre. The definition of the word jam is just too broad. There are many bands that can qualify as a jam band.
Also, it depends on what a hippie is to you. Is a hippie a person who believes in love and peace? If so, there were hippies long before the term "hippie" was coined. Or is a hippie just a kid from the 60s, that went to music festivals and took lsd? I think the ideology of a hippie is what really makes a hippie. Sure there were kids that jumped on the hippie scene just because of the l*s*d and the scene. There were also people who really believed in love and peace. If you ask me, there were hippies long before the term was coined, and there are still hippies to this day. You need a history lesson, hippies were very important in american history.

Please see my earlier post wherein I emphasize the difference between the act of "jamming" and the notion of being a "jamband," because you seem to have a hard time differentiating.
Look at it like this: in football, sometimes, on certain plays, the running back might take a handoff from the quarterback and throw a pass. Now, that does not make that running back a quarterback, it just means that he assumed the primary property of the quarterback for an isolated time. It's the same way with what you're getting at here. Just because Mastodon invites the lead guitarist from Baroness up on stage to "jam" on a song doesn't make them a jam band.
The act of "jamming" is something that all musicians have probably done at one time or another. That does not make any musician who has ever jammed a "jamband."
I see what youre saying. But youre trying to pass your opinion off as fact.
You make a good point though. I guess to you, a jam band is a band that plays multiple genres of music? There isnt a technical definition of a jam band. I dont like to categorize music. Music is music. A jam is a jam. Any band jams, so to me, any band can be called a jam band. To argue that requires too music labeling for me.

Not necessarily, but it helps. The lack of ability to easily classify a band would be one thing I'd look for, but not just that. For instance, The Roots have songs that contain elements of hip-hop, R&B, funk, jazz, rock...but I wouldn't call them a jamband, as they don't really improvise and clearly remain rooted in hip-hop. Meanwhile, the Allman Brothers are clearly southern rock (and don't stray far outside that), yet the emphasis on improvisation pushes them into jamband territory. Genres where improvisation is a natural extension of the music itself (specifically jazz) are generally exempt from this.
Youre saying that jazz especially isnt jam band music? The term "jam" did originate in jazz music. To me, a jam band can be any band who plays multiple types of music, or any band that adds improv to their performances. Those are the main qualities of a jam band, to me.
