Me too. It requires too much music labeling. If someone wants to think that mmj is a jam band, then let them. Just because they dont agree with you doesnt make them wrong.

Lil' Wayne is my favorite jamband.
When I was younger I saw a Matchbox 20 concert and they had some points where they had improv.......I had no idea that it was because they are a jamband.

cant say i care to hop into any of the above debating... however, the second and third tier acts on the lineup are what is bringing me back again this year. namely the jam bands mentioned. after 8 trips to the roo i took one look at the headliners and wondered when they were going to bring the rain.... i kept reading then ordered a ticket
The original Fleetwood Mac was one of the greatest jam bands I've ever heard. Here are two songs (really one jam) from Then Play On. Features Peter Green on lead guitar who today is still considered one of the top electric guitarists ever. Check it out and don't let the Fleetwood Mac thing scare you. This is not the Rumors kind of Fleetwood Mac.

Hell ya man. Peter greens fleetwood mac is the best fleetwood mac. Peter green is awesome. His most famous piece is black magic woman. He was one of santanas favorite guitarist. This is one of my favorites from them. Im predicting that you saying Peter Green is considered one of the greatest guitarists ever is going to cause some controversy.
I think by jam band, the creators of this list really mean a band who puts on a really good live performance. A band that really jams in concert. I think that makes a little more sense
Guess you can't grasp the concept that "jamband" is not a genre of music. But go ahead and flame on with your anti-hippie campaign.
News Flash: This festival, this website, this discussion would not exist without hippies. Next time you go to a MMJ concert, hug one (I'm sure there are plenty around)
It already does exist without hippies, because there's no such thing as a hippie anymore. Sorry to burst your bubble, Rainbow, but "hippies" died out long ago. There are lots of people playing at being a hippie, but they are a poor copy of the actual thing.
And why isn't "jamband" a specific genre? There are bands that clearly fit into that category more than any other, specifically because the music defines classification, and places an emphasis on extended improvisation in lieu of traditionally defined song structure. I'm thinking in particular of Phish, moe., Umphrey's, Bisco (though they stray very close to becoming straight up electronica), String Cheese Incident, etc. Would you really call Phish or moe. a "rock" band? Or Umphrey's a "prog" band? They take those genres and push them in a different direction, to the point where they are no longer recognizable. It's not like classifying a band like MMW or Old Crow or Primus or Dirty Dozen as a jamband, because those bands, by and large, still live within the predefined conception of a specific genre and are therefore easily classifiable.
If jamband is a genre of music, like you say, then how can a band like WSP play covers of Bob Marley(reggae), Metallica(heavy metal), Otis Redding (R&B), Meters (funk) and tons of different blues numbers and still be under one genre? Guess its easier to say jamband than blues-reggae-heavy metal-rythm & blues-funk-rock band
If you think Grateful Dead and moe. are the same genre of music, you are super high
I mean, let's take the crowd out of this equation and focus on the music. I know about all the “frat boys,” and “wookies,” but what’s so wrong with the music?
Also, I don’t understand how what Dave Matthews Band does is not jamming. How else does a 5 minute song become a 30 minute song?
Maybe they could all just be called “really f*cking good live bands?”
MMJ is a RFGLB, so is MMW, so is DMB, so is Phish, so is SCI, so are Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, so are The Disco Biscuits, etc.
I’ve never understood the whole derogatory connotation to the term jam band. I’ve never been to see a “jam band” that sucked.
It kind of seems that the anti-jam band sentiment is based solely on the fan demographic.
A lot of d*uche bags like Stanley Kubrick, but he’s still a good director. A lot of d*uche bags like a lot of things, but that doesn’t make them suck more.
The common music listener won't appreciate Peter Green, to me being a great guitarist is about having great phrasing and Peter Green had it. I see it as giving a good speech. A good speech does not spit a million words non stop, it have pauses, it has certain emphasis on different parts.
If we are counting the band as a "jam" band, then they have to be high on the list as well.
^^^^^ wow. I cant believe there is actually people on here who think like me. Peter green is great. Im betting anyone who doesnt like peter green is a fan of speed playing. Youre a muddy waters fan, whofalls? Hell ya. Im surprised to see one on here. And THE BAND? They jam so many different types of music.

Theres nothing wrong with jam bands. Why are people so judgemental about people who see jam bands? Youre an idiot if you think you know everyone at a jam band concert enough to judge them, and call them "wookies." I agree with you what youre saying. Does the grateful dead suck? The allman brothers band sucks? No way! There is nothing bad about jam bands. Someone said the allman brothers werent a jam band. How can you say that? They fuse the blues, southern rock, and jazz. Ever heard of the song "Mountain JAM?" Its 30 minutes long. Listen to that and tell me they arent a jam band

The notes you dont play mean just as much as the notes you play. Someone once said that one of BB kings notes is worth a thousand notes of any other player. Maybe not ANY other player. But you see what im saying

I completely agree with that. I was always taught to give people a taste and leave them wanting more. So many guitar players bore me. They play everything they know in a 2 minute solo.

People like satriani and vai dont make music, they make big piles of notes. Music requires structure. There is no structure to their type of playing. I watched malmsteen, satriani and vai cover neil youngs keep on rockin in the free world. It was horrible. They completely butchered a great song. All speed shredders sound the same
From experience, i find that playing fast is easier. Its not hard at all to play the same notes over and over as fast as you can. Its all mechanical. Theres no creativity. Theres no style. Its only skin deep. People see the speed and are wowed. Those same people are distracted by shiny objects.
I consider any band that regularly does impromptu jams around their songs a jam band. I also consider this to be a VERY good thing, because it shows that they are a true artist and not a machine trying to spit out a copy of what they already recorded.
