The loss of the Art of Such and Such last year was kind of sad. While it was never at the top of my list of things to see and do at Bonnaroo, the art is something that always made it more special.
I think it's kind of cool what they're doing this year with the Art Institutes
We're pleased to announce The Art Institutes schools as a creative partner of the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. A first of its kind partnership, students from Art Institutes schools will provide creative services to the festival through a series of 15 projects. Follow the students on their creative journey by visiting here.
As part of the partnership, our friends at The Art Institutes are helping to make Bonnaroo X the most creative yet. This year, we're asking you to help create it. You have the opportunity to submit your ideas to refresh our current art installations and help create some new ones. Please visit bonnaroo.com/projectbonnaroo to learn more about how to participate and submit designs. The winner of each specific project will receive a grant towards the creation of their project, two (2) tickets to the Festival, and the opportunity to work with our visual design team onsite.
I think this could yield some seriously awesome results
IMO the best art I saw last year were some of the amazing designs on the centeroo walls.. A few bottles of spray paint constructively applied. Not an art major or critic by any means, however it was amazing to see how spray paint could be use constructively : )
This is what I have been looking for, the Art at Roo. Last year was my first year at Roo. The graffiti was beyond good, but I was looking for something more. Glad to see this. ;D
This submission of art ideas could be brilliant because I'm sure people will want to make something special for Bonnaroo because it's a huge platform and will definitely be a plus on their respective portfolios. I'm sure the sheer size of entries will wield enough gems. The Coachella installations are very cool but I would not be surprised if they have exclusive rights to those artists.

the graffiti (especially its constant evolution) last year was pretty great. but i definitely agree that i would love to see more art in more mediums. this art institute project has the potential to turn out really great.
Those lanterns were fire no pun intended. I tried finding the spray all over the small town I live in and nobody had it. Was wanting to make a few myself the instructions are fairly easy if you have the right stuff.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE sky lanterns Was bummed I missed the DMB ones last year.
The lanterns were cool for DMB last year, but anyone that was at allgood last summer can tell you, the sky lanterns at the end of Furthur were just crazy! Probably 4 or 5 times more lanterns than were at the end of DMB at roo!
All those lanterns rising off the mountaintop...Crazy!!

Either way its pretty fucking cool looking. I always had such a high opinion of such'n'such because of the flaming and electrified steel statues they had in 2006. I would LOVE to see more stuff like that back on the farm, but given the safety concerns I doubt it will happen.
No D, you are right, Serpent Mother was at Coachella in 2009. The people who built it are from San Francisco and are called the Flaming Lotus Girlsand do amazing work! In 2008 they built Mutopia. Which is these 15' tall metal flowers with the leaves that move and are on fire and each flower could shot a 30'-40' methanol flame out of its top. Those flames were orange, purple and a green one. All of their work is interactive. Push this button and a flame shouts out, push that button and the Serpents head moves. Insane! Not sure if the interactive part would go over well at Roo or even Coachella, but do I ever wish Bonnaroo would have art like this!!!
although nobody is in this picture, you were able to walk around, under, through and all over Mutopia.

I think the real problem at Roo is management of space. Coachella is more contained and has a certain "flow" to it, while Roo is kind of just a huge piece of land.

would agree when comparing art at other fests (ive never coachellad) ive been too its done in far more of a confined space than roo is working with. though i do love seeing it every year
They should just get the people who do Coachella's art.
Coachella was hella aesthetically pleasing, down to every little detail! But I feel this could turn out to be pretty awesome, I am excited to see what this results in!
Also, the wall that get's tagged up every year at 'Roo is pry my favorite art attraction, improv and on the spot, it always turns out sweet
